Education Nominee Admits Trump’s ‘Access Hollywood’ Boasts Describe Sexual Assault

During a confirmation hearing Tuesday, Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) asked Donald Trump’s nominee for education secretary about the president-elect’s infamous boasts on the “Access Hollywood” tapes.

In questioning Betsy DeVos, Murray wanted to know whether Trump’s descriptions of kissing and groping women without their consent ― and the allegations subsequently made about him by a host of women ― amounted to sexual assault.

“I take accusations of this type of behavior very seriously,” Murray said. “If this behavior ― kissing and touching women and girls without their consent ― happened in a school, would you consider it a sexual assault?”

DeVos gave the only reasonable answer.

“Yes.”

In the “Access Hollywood” tape that surfaced a month before the presidential election, Trump says that he doesn’t need a woman’s consent before he kisses her. “I just start kissing them,” he said. He also says he likes to grab women “by the pussy.” Trump, along with many of his supporters and Republican politicians, dismissed the remarks as “locker room banter.”

Sexual assault figured prominently in DeVos’ hearing. Under President Barack Obama, the Education Department has launched dozens of investigations into how college campuses have handled sexual assault allegations. The Obama administration views such attacks as a federal civil rights issue, giving the Education Department the leeway to pressure campuses for reforms.

Backers of those policies are now wondering if the Trump administration would roll them back once they assume power. Democrats invited victims of sexual assault to the hearing in order to draw attention to the issue.

Sen. Bob Casey (D-Penn.) asked DeVos to promise to uphold Obama’s policies on that front, but DeVos said it would be “premature” to do so. When Murray also asked DeVos about whether she’d maintain those reforms, DeVos dodged the question again.

“If confirmed, I commit that I will be looking very closely at how this has been regulated and handled, with great sensitivity to those who are victims and considering perpetrators as well,” she said.

A New Year, A New Chapter, A New You

2017-01-16-1484601083-5847386-hrdvsypffasaustinschmid.jpg

The start of the New Year has me thinking about endings, beginnings, and the paths we take to lead us from one chapter to the next. How did you choose your direction? How did you decide to be a botanist, a nurse, or a stay-at-home Dad? For some, life’s course comes naturally–as for those who know what they want to be as early as high school. For others, those decisions come hard–as for those of us who struggle to find our way until a midlife crisis leads us from one place to another.

For me, the certainty that I would wind up as a writer became apparent when I was quite young–though other ideas cropped up along the way. At one point, I dreamed of being a psychiatrist who could help people heal from the disease my mother suffered from. At another, I was sure I would be a horse breeder, spending my life on a farm with all sorts of animals, as I had at summer camp. But the passion for writing won out during my freshman year in college, and when I turned twenty-one I started my first book.

After two decades of writing fiction, at forty years old, I discovered–to my surprise–that I had something important to say about myself. I had a new grasp on all that had happened to me and all that I, at last, understood about my own history. A strong urge to express these revelations and my conclusions about them led me to memoir. I decided to jump genres.

Memoir requires a particular kind of courage–a willingness to open up emotionally and go public with your understanding of your life, rather than putting your experiences and ideas into the mouths of imaginary characters. This sort of writing is a challenge for me in many ways. First and foremost, it’s about “getting over” myself and learning how to be humble. Then there is conquering the fear of being vulnerable with an unknown host of others. Last but not least, there is the complicated matter of writing about people who are so integral to the experiences I am sharing with the world.

2017-01-16-1484581907-2120275-xzw66yayvbaalexwigan.jpg

I get questions from readers about all these issues regularly, and my answer to them is always the same simple truth: I am driven to reach out to others via what I have learned through my own life. I can’t flinch from writing about it. I often receive emails (or sometimes letters) from those who tell me that Searching for Mercy Street helped them to understand their parents better and to forgive the inevitable errors made while raising them. And others write to say that Half in Love has helped them to understand more about depression and suicide, or to move them to seek medical help, or to speak more frankly about their emotions with family–or just to take the risk of reaching out to me, a total stranger who might not answer, even though I seem to be a kindred spirit.

Every one of these reactions makes the fear of baring my soul to the world worthwhile, and this is what fulfills me. It puts into perspective any desire for better sales figures or stellar reviews. In the end, affecting other people with my writing is all that matters to me, and I’m grateful that my life allows me to pursue such a goal.

I have known many who have scrambled for a long time before being able to make a mid-life decision to go in a new direction. One who left a flourishing law practice to write; one who ditched the security of a being a physician to take the risk of becoming a Silicon Valley entrepreneur; one who took years away from her career in journalism to sail the world with her husband and young children; one who decided to become a stay-at-home Dad so that his wife could pursue her dream; one who conquered depression over being childless and adopted instead; one who went back to school at age forty to become a minister.

The changes these people created for themselves required enormous bravery and a willingness to take a leap of faith. I admire them immensely. They gave me the guts to make yet another shift in my professional life, one over which I had been hesitating. Although it was not dissatisfaction that pushed me to leave the genre that I loved, however temporarily, at the outset of 2015 I tackled fiction once again. I chose to start a novel in spite of my insecurity and fear about critics who sometimes judge that my memoirs are my best efforts. But, of course, the decision was softened by the fact that I was lucky enough to be able to continue using my own personal stories in my newsletters, blogs and articles.

We might all look for inspiration, as I did twice, in the examples of the others I’ve written about above–particularly if we are unhappy with wherever life has led us thus far. The advent of a new year is the perfect time to try something fresh. Summon up your courage and unleash whatever it is that fires you up.

Duchess Kate Nails Why People Don’t Seek Mental Health Help

The Duchess of Cambridge is yet again schooling the world on negative mental health stereotypes.

The duchess, along with Prince William and Prince Harry, spoke out about how stigma prevents people with mental illness from seeking support. The brief speech by the former Kate Middleton was part of an event in London on Tuesday for Heads Together, the royals’ mental health charity.

“The challenge that so many people have is not knowing how to take that first step of reaching out to another person for help. Admitting that they are not coping,” she said. “Fear, or reticence, or a sense of not wanting to burden another, means that people suffer in silence ― allowing the problem to grow larger and larger unchecked.

Kate couldn’t have summed it up better. Too often shame silences those with a mental health condition. And what’s worse is that it could be damaging to that person’s health: Research shows that the misconceptions surrounding behavioral health conditions often stand in the way of people getting professional treatment.

Approximately one in four adults globally experience a mental health issue in a given year. That number increases when you factor in children. Experts say anxiety disorders among kids are one of the most common pediatric problems

This is another mental health issue the royals are hoping to tackle. Last year, Kate penned an essay for The Huffington Post U.K. where she addressed the consequences that come with ignoring a child’s psychological well-being.

“The mental health of our children must be seen as every bit as important as their physical health,” she wrote. “For too long we have been embarrassed to admit when our children need emotional or psychiatric help, worried that the stigma associated with these problems would be detrimental to their futures.”

If we’re being honest, we could listen to this family talk about mental health all day. Keep it up, guys!

Water Requirements for Irrigation and the Environment

Water Requirements for Irrigation and the Environment

Irrigated agriculture produces about 40% of all food and fibre on about 16% of all cropped land. As such, irrigated agriculture is a productive user of resources; both in terms of yield per cropped area and in yield per volume of water consumed. Many irrigation projects, however, use (divert or withdraw) much more water than consumed by the crop. The non-consumed fraction of the water may cause a variety of undesirable effects ranging from water-logging and salinity within the irrigated area to downstram water pollution. This book discusses all components of the water balance of an irrigated area; evapotranspiration (Ch.2), effective precipitation (Ch.3) and capillary rise from the groundwater table (Ch.4). Chapter 5 then combines all components into a water management strategy that balances actual evapotranspiration (and thus crop yield) with the groundwater balance of the irrigated area (for a substainable environment). Chapter 6 presents CRIWAR 3.0, a simulation program that combines all water balance components into a single simulation procedure. The chapter describes the use of the CRIWAR software for developing water requirement tables and other useful information based on the selected water management strategy. This version greatly expands upon the capabilities of previously published programs.

Trump Called Russia America’s ‘Biggest Problem’ In 2014

Donald Trump may now gush that Russia is doing “great things,” but as recently as 2014 he called the nation America’s “biggest problem.”

Trump also suggested imposing tough economic sanctions on Russia in the wake of its February invasion of the Crimea that year. He disdainfully scoffed at the media for failing to take the threat of Russia seriously. He also characterized Russian President Vladimir Putin as untrustworthy and a liar. Speaking about the nation’s incursion into Crimea, Trump said that Russia had vowed “we will not go into Ukraine, we will not do that, it will never happen. Twenty minutes later they went in.” He acknowledged that Putin is “rebuilding the Russian empire. That’s his thing.”

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal published last Friday, the president-elect said he would consider dropping those sanctions — despite findings by the U.S. intelligence community that Putin ordered U.S. internet hacking to manipulate the presidential election — as long as Russia is “doing great things.” Trump didn’t specify what great things he was referring to. “If you get along and if Russia is really helping us, why would anybody have sanctions if somebody’s doing some really great things?”

He also said in an interview published Sunday in The Times of London that he would drop the sanctions imposed after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in exchange for a nuclear arms reduction deal with Putin.

But CNN reported that Trump lashed out at Russia in two phone interviews in March 2014 on “Fox and Friends” and in another interview on NBC.

In the interviews, Trump agreed with former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s assessment that Russia was a key geopolitical foe. “Well, Mitt was right, and he was also right when he mentioned in the debates [that] Russia’s our biggest problem, and Russia is, you know, really something,” Trump told Fox.

“He said it’s a hell of a problem, and everybody laughed at him, including certain media, by the way,” Trump added. “They laughed. It turned out that he’s absolutely right.” Trump mentioned Russian activity in Iran and Syria (”Syria’s now 100 percent back in their fold”), and “virtually every other place,” adding: “To be scoffed at and thrown around the way we’re being thrown around is absolutely unthinkable.”

He also said on NBC’s “Today” show that “we should definitely do sanctions” against Russia and complained that President Barack Obama wasn’t taking a hard enough line with Russia. “We have to show some strength,” he added.

Other than sanctions, however, it was unclear what kind of action Trump was calling for. He said America had to focus on fixing its own problems before taking on any foreign confrontations. He said on Fox on March 3, 2014, that his big concern was that Obama would do “something really stupid to show that he’s all man,” possibly referring to engaging in a war with Russia.

The comments were made before Trump threw his hat into the ring to become the Republican pick for president. But the beginnings of his puzzling regard for former KGB leader Putin were already evident. Putin’s “poll ratings are through the roof. The people love him. They love what he’s doing,” Trump noted in the March 24, 2014, Fox interview, though, bizarrely, he also indicated that the poll numbers probably were not trustworthy.

He also praised Putin as a “smart, calculating guy,” in the March 3 Fox interview. “We’re talking about a different league of I don’t know if it’s street smarts or intelligence or whatever.”

There was no immediate response from the president-elect’s team on Trump’s change of heart on Russia.

It’s hardly the first time Trump has experienced a whipsaw opinion switch. After actress Meryl Streep criticized Trump in her Golden Globes speech Jan. 8, the president-elect blasted her as “over-rated,” though a year earlier he’d called her an “excellent” actress and one of his favorites.

He also called for the death penalty for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in 2010, but then two weeks ago touted Assange’s opinion concerning Russian hacking of the U.S. internet over his nation’s intelligence leaders.

How To Recover From Blogger Burnout In 3 Easy Ways

What Happens When You Step Away

What happens when you’ve slowed down on social media to truly reflect where you’re heading with your business?

What happens when you lose the flow of your posting schedule and you don’t even know where to start?

What happens when you think your voice won’t matter anymore?

What happens when you feel stuck?

You haven’t spoken up in over 2 months and we all know that is forever in the online world. You’ve not posted on all your social media platforms, You haven’t recorded a video, You’ve not showed up in your own FB group! What happens to your self-esteem and your confidence when these actions take place. Well, I should really ask what happens to your self-esteem and confidence when nothing has taken place or when you are sucked into this idea that you have to be online 24-7 in order to make a dollar? Well, it can be pretty depressing to know or should I rather say “think” that you have to start all over.

“Truth is being on social media all the time does not equate to running a business or conducting business activity”

You didn’t always feel this way…You actually had some rhyme or reason to what you were doing months before but somehow you’ve experienced something called burnout. That’s what it is. I hate this term burnout. It feels so cliche, it feels like I crashed and burned and there’s no return. There’s no getting back up. But really with all these emotions and thoughts there is light at the end of the tunnel. There is a lesson to be learned and taught to others.

So…let me revisit those questions and share with you my answer.

What can happen when you’ve slowed down on social media?

For starters you get to reflect where you were/are heading with your business… So in my book, amazing things can happen! You begin to have a new sense of confidence and clarity. You can find a new sense of commitment to your goals and what you stand for in your business. You can begin to find your own voice again. You know what when you are constantly online being bombarded by everyone else’s messages you can begin to sound like or imitate someone you really admire. But guess what? You aren’t that person so this time away can bring about a uniqueness in you, and difference in you where you begin to stand out more in your own niche in this sea of online businesses.

What can happen when you lose your flow of your posting schedule and you don’t even know where to start?

Realistically you haven’t lost your flow…you had it scheduled once before. If you scheduled it before I’m sure you can refer back to your old schedule but this time with a breath of fresh ideas and opinions. You can find it on a piece of paper a word document, one of your planners. Start looking back and re-evaluating what you were doing before the burnout. You may just be in a bit of a funk…YOU personally and internally may not be in a flow but that’s ok. Begin to reconnect with your creator first, with the God who created you and listen in to your spirit and where He would have you begin. He’s given you a message for others and you know you gotta get it out to the masses. Start small. Start with an inspirational photo, feel free to reintroduce yourself. Do whatever feels right to you but whatever you do never give up because you lost your flow or feel like you don’t know where to start. I can help with that…I hope this blog post is helping with that now.

What happens when you think your voice won’t matter?

Well honey, this is more of an internal thing. If you are feeling like your voice won’t matter then guess what…it won’t. It’s not for you to determine how your story will connect with others. It’s not for you to give a consensus on the wonderful message imparted within you. Nope you don’t get to judge your message before sharing with others.

When I stepped outside of my own comfort zone and began to share my story and share what I stood for, guess what. I got an astounding…”That was powerful”. This was a mindset shift that I was sharing with other women in my group.

Did you know that I re-edited and re-edited and stressed over this message for days before I put it out. Your voice is your message and when you share it just know if you’ve touched one person you’ve done your job!!!

Conclusion

Whether you are recovering from “Burn Out” or currently experiencing it as you read this post, it’s important to remember that business is a journey and there is no race to the finish line. Brands continually evolve and grow just like we do as people. Sometimes that growth may feel stunted and other times you may experience a growth spurt. But most importantly, building a business is a journey through personal development.

Learning more about yourself and allowing your commitment to shine through regardless of where you think you should be in business are important steps to showing up and serving others through your business.

Don’t Repeal Me, Please!

I am luckier than most. After 20 years of having multiple sclerosis I am still relatively healthy. I have a spot on my foot which is mildly numb most of the time and markedly numb when I have an exacerbation. This is damage I got from not treating an exacerbation with steroid therapy. Sometimes when I am dancing I can feel weakness in my legs, but I still dance. I will always dance. Heat and I have a love/hate relationship. I love a sauna in January. That first sweat is such a cleansing feeling. But a prolonged heat wave in summer will sap me like an iPhone battery. I have extreme vertigo whenever I ride a canoe, an amusement ride, or a swing at the playground with my son. These are things I no longer do. They do not effect my quality of life. Life has so much more to offer than amusement rides.

I can go through long periods of remission. Sometimes years. There are times when I am strong. I can haul 50 lb. bales of hay, show a cow who is boss. But when life is stressful, like say after a divorce or economic insecurity, the stress can be too much and I get sick.

It is my pre-existing condition. There have been times when I have not had health insurance. When the divorce papers were signed by the judge I lost the health insurance I had with my husband. I was only working a part time job. My state, Maine, had not expanded medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. I fell into this bubble. One that with just a small bump in income of a couple thousand dollars would qualify me for the ACA.

Sometimes when I feel an exacerbation start I have this feeling in my head that someone else is driving this body. Simple tasks such as shoveling a car out in winter will feel like epic adventures requiring more effort than this body is capable of. Thinking becomes clouded. The only upside I can see is the extreme cleaning my house will have after five days of IV cortico-steroid therapy. Lemonade.

So it was in a March, after a long winter of extreme weather, car troubles, and a steady eye on my bottom line that I could feel the disjointed arrival of an exacerbation. I had no health insurance. A call to my neurologist set up the IV therapy. I arranged to have the medication before I went to work every day. I have a job that does not pay sick time. When I showed up at the registration desk at the hospital they helped me sign up for uncompensated care. The debt from the steroids would have been unmanageable on a 15,000 a year income. So, yes, your tax dollars paid for my medicine. Thank you.

It would be another six months of working multiple jobs before I finally got a raise in pay and enough hours of work to qualify for the ACA. For my family of two that magic number is 18,000 a year. I just squeak by. If I make just a little less than this I can lose my health insurance again because Maine still has a governor who will not expand medicaid. I signed up for a silver plan with a 250.00 deductible. I received a subsidy which means that my monthly payment was 10.00 a month. I have re-enrolled for 2017 and that monthly payment has gone up to 45.00 a month. Still affordable.

But all this may just be moot.

I want to trust that we have leaders that are going to make sure that I can get the care I need without the worry of crushing debt. I want to trust that when, not if, I get sick again I can treat the illness and forestall any damage it may do to my nervous system, so I can keep walking, so I can see.

I know for insurance companies, members of congress, think tanks, and governors my story is just a number. It probably does not make a blip on their radar. When people become numbers to the policy makers the real life consequences must seem abstract. My life is so far removed from the desk that pens these laws. But a repeal without a reasonable replacement seems like poor political decision making to me. I follow the news everyday. I watch a Congress dismantle the very thing that has insured an element of economic security to a life I have worked hard to rebuild after divorce. The glee with which this has happened does not promote much confidence or trust. I want to trust we have leaders. I want to trust. I’m just not sure I can.

Donald Trump Expanding Scottish Golf Resort After Vowing Not To Make New Foreign Deals

A multimillion-dollar expansion of Donald Trump’s Scottish golf resort is proceeding despite a promise just days ago by his attorneys that “no new foreign deals will be made whatsoever” by the president-elect’s businesses, in an effort to avoid conflicts of interest during his presidency.

The Aberdeenshire Council has approved a second 18-hole golf course and more housing in the Trump International Golf Links Scotland operation. The expansion will substantially grow the complex and include a 450-room five-star hotel, timeshare complex and private housing estate, The Guardian reported Saturday. Changes are expected to significantly boost the value of the operation to the Trump Organization.

Trump’s attorney Sheri Dillon announced at his press conference last week that in order to avoid potential conflicts of interest, her client has “ordered that all pending deals be terminated.” Trump is also arranging to turn over management of his companies to his adult sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, but will maintain ownership and investments in his American and global companies and real estate deals. It’s an arrangement that the head of the Office of Government Ethics said fails to meet an ethics standard met by every other president in the last four decades.

Trump owns 100 percent of the Trump International Golf Links Scotland, according to the Guardian.

written statement later issued by Dillon’s law firm Morgan Lewis emphasized that Trump’s promise “prohibits — without exception — new foreign deals during the duration of President-elect Trump’s presidency.”

It added: “Specifically, the Trust and The Trump Organization will be prohibited at all times … from engaging in any new deals with respect to the use of the ‘Trump’ brand or any trademark, trade name, or marketing intangibles associated with The Trump Organization or Donald J. Trump in any foreign jurisdictions.”

But now Trump’s transition team insists that the golf resort expansion doesn’t constitute a new deal.

“Implementing future phasing of existing properties does not constitute a new transaction so we intend to proceed,” a spokeswoman told the Scottish Sunday Herald.

Richard Painter, a former White House chief ethics adviser to George W. Bush, called the situation a “perfect example” of obvious conflicts of interest that Trump will apparently continue to attempt to obfuscate.

“He’s using language which is ambiguous. It clearly illustrates that around the world, he will simply expand around the various holdings and as they continue to expand, the conflicts of interest expand,” Painter told the Guardian. “It’s like [the board game] Monopoly: if you have one house on Boardwalk, it’s not a new deal to go for three hotels on Boardwalk.”

Trump’s Aberdeenshire golf resort is particularly notable because it dramatically raised early fears about his conflicts of interest — and concerns that he would push his own business interests as president ahead of what might be best for the public. In a meeting with British politician Nigel Farage shortly after Trump’s election, Trump complained that planned offshore wind farms providing environment-protecting alternative energy would mar the views at his course. He encouraged Farage and his entourage to lobby against the farms.

Scottish residents protested against Trump when he visited last June because of how he handled the golf resort development. Neighbors are suing him because he built a fence blocking a sea view at the house of homeowners who refused to sell to him, and then sent them a bill for it.

You watch, Mexico won’t pay either,” homeowner David Milne told the New York Times.

The Guardian has reported that Trump hasn’t paid UK taxes on his courses in Aberdeenshire and Turnberry in Ayrshire because he has lost nearly $ 31 million on his Scottish golf empire on an investment of some $ 123 million.

Where is HOME?

A good friend of mine shared a question posed by guitarist, Chris Wood on her Facebook page:

“Bob Dylan described eloquently how his music has been the quest to get home. Now as much as ever feels like a good time to ask you; what feels like home to you? Are you there already or do you still have a way to go?”

On the same day, singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran released a new song called “Castle on the Hill”. The song retraces the singer’s youth, returning to his former home and recalling his memories en route.

I grew up in a small rural town called Penrith in Cumbria, England. It’s a tourist town situated on the edge of the Lake District National Park. I return periodically but I’ve realised over the years how my fond memories are stored in music rather than the place itself.

I consider Penrith to be my home but every time I return I feel more distant, more disconnected. Maybe what I search for is my youth – to remember Penrith as I did back then and feel the way the town made me feel then – but lately it seems empty, soulless. The only way I can get that feeling back is by listening to music that reminds me of when it was my home. That works, then I miss it, then it feels like home again.

When my mind traces back through all the places I’ve lived, they each have songs associated with the memories. In that sense, each place feels like home. There’s a nostalgic pull to every dwelling for different reasons and different songs. For some, scents can also trigger memories of places they consider home.

But where is home? Is it the house or town you grew up in or the house or town where you raised your family? Maybe it’s the place you felt most loved or perhaps the place you gave most love to. How does our heart identify home?

For many, home is more than a memory. For refugees, home is their country; for the street children in Brazil and India, home is wherever they feel safest.

So are we all constantly striving to find home? Do creative people, like Bob Dylan, find sanctuary in their work?

I’ve spent hours pondering an answer to Chris Wood’s question and feel no definitive place as my home. The house where I live now, and watched my family grow, is my home but Penrith is my home town. Maybe I am still on that quest to go home, but I fear that home was a moment in time…

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on what you consider home and why, so please comment below.

These 6 Kids’ Drawings Of Kindness Nail The Best Thing About It

“Kids are intrinsically kind”, says Dr. Michael Tomasello, a professor of developmental psychology at Duke University. They are also, as parents or teachers can attest, prone to bouts of egocentric behavior, riding the complex ups and downs of on-again/off-again compassion over the course of their development.

While greater compassion can, and should, be fostered in kids ― whether through the acknowledgement of a kind act, or through modeling desired behaviour ― there is something incredible about seeing the wheels turn in a child’s head as they make a connection for themselves to the organic reward of kindness that goes beyond the “should” of being kind.

To demonstrate the impact of this connection, we partnered with Dignity Health, and asked a handful of kids ages four to eleven to draw acts of kindness that they had recently encountered. What they drew, and what they said about the power of kindness, is both heartwarming and illuminating. See for yourself!

More than a century of experience and years of scientific research have shown that medicine is more effective when delivered with a kind heart. Dignity Health believes that humankindness holds the power to heal the mind, body, and spirit.

The Great Kindness Challenge, of which Dignity Health has been a supporter for four years, has worked to create a culture of kindness in elementary, middle, and high school students worldwide since 2008. This year’s challenge takes place worldwide January 23 – 27.

How to Get Your Child to Eat Healthy Food

How to Get Your Child to Eat Healthy Food

How do I get my child to eat healthy food?”- is one of the questions I encounter most frequently in my practice as a Parenting and Wellness consultant. Almost every parent is struggling to get a child to eat – one could easily call it the commonest Parenting problem. Parents who are in the midst of this problem are usually in despair because – it is really distressing not to be able to fulfil the one – most basic need of one’s child. It makes one feel inadequate as a parent and irresponsible as an adult. My heart goes out to such parents. They need solutions – and in this book I have offered some.

Perpetual Political War

The Trump slump has begun. Trump has less public support than any President-elect on record. Only 44 percent of Americans say they approve of Trump’s handling of the presidential transition, according to Gallup. That number is going down. It was 48 percent a month ago.

Compare that with George W. Bush, who took office in January 2001 after the fiercely disputed Florida recount. Bush started out with 61 percent support. Bill Clinton won the 1992 election with 43 percent of the popular vote in a three-way split with President George H.W. Bush and Ross Perot. Clinton’s transition rating: 68 percent approval.

Honeymoon? Forget it. Only 37 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of Trump in this month’s Quinnipiac poll. Most Americans don’t like Trump.

There is only one way Trump can survive: perpetual political war. He got elected by dividing the country. It was not exactly the old division, left versus right. Trump provoked a populist-elitist division by fiercely attacking the cosmopolitan ruling class. “There is nothing that the political establishment will not do, no lie that they won’t tell, to hold their prestige and power at your expense,” he told a rally in Florida in October.

Resentment of intellectuals and educated elites is an old theme in U.S. politics, going all the way back to Andrew Jackson. Trump exploited it relentlessly. He ended up carrying non-college educated white voters by better than two to one.

The cultural elite’s response to Trump? Contempt. Actress Meryl Streep denounced Trump as a “bully” for his “instinct to humiliate” the less fortunate. Trump’s response? Defiance. He called Streep “one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood” and “a Hillary flunky who lost big.” Contempt versus defiance. That is likely to be the prevailing mode of political discourse for the next four years.

Given the interference in the election by Russia and the FBI, Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) told NBC News, “I don’t see this President-elect as a legitimate President.” Trump’s response via Twitter: “Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime-infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results.”

A former Hillary Clinton campaign strategist said on MSNBC, “What would be great is if [Trump] started conducting himself in a way that’s consistent with the manner of all preceding Presidents. . . . Stop hurling insults. Stop hurling tweets.” Trump’s response? A defiant tweet: “What are Hillary Clinton’s people complaining about with respect to the FBI? Based on the information they had, she should never have been allowed to run — guilty as hell.”

For Trump to survive, two conditions must hold. Republicans have to keep their majorities in Congress, and Trump’s supporters have to stand by him. His supporters can threaten any Republican in Congress who opposes or even criticizes the President with a serious primary challenge.

Trump knows how to rally his army. He has weaponized social media. Twitter nurtures populism. It enables Trump to bypass the news media and communicate directly with his people, who regard the media as a despised elite. As President, Trump has to continue tweeting to keep his populist following on a war footing.

A revenge cycle is underway in American politics. The minute Barack Obama took office in 2009, conservatives organized a resistance movement. The Tea Party sprang into existence a few weeks after Obama’s inauguration. Its mission was to oppose and obstruct everything Obama tried to do.

Now a resistance movement is emerging among progressive Democrats. Its mission is to everything Trump tries to do. Big city Democratic mayors say they will refuse to cooperate with efforts to deport immigrants who seek refuge in their cities. Democratic state officials are organizing to do the same thing Republican state officials did when Obama was President — go to court to challenge the federal government’s constitutional authority to pass laws they find objectionable.

The California legislature is retaining Eric Holder, Obama’s former attorney general, to represent them in legal confrontations with the Trump Administration. “Having the former attorney general of the United States brings us a lot of firepower in order to prepare to safeguard the values of the people of California,” the Democratic leader of the state senate said.

The Democratic National Committee is setting up a “war room” to fight President Trump — a research and communications operation aimed at rallying opposition to his policies, exposing his conflicts of interest and challenging his factual distortions.

You thought the 2016 campaign was over? It was actually the opening salvo of a war that’s likely to go on for years. Trump thrives on division. The Trump slump doesn’t threaten him as long as his army is ready to fight at his command.

12 Things Every ‘Type A’ Person Wants You To Know

2017-01-12-1484257821-2930246-12ThingsEveryTypeAPersonWantsYouToKnowHP.jpeg

Robert Frost once said, “The brain is a wonderful organ; it starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office.” He certainly wasn’t thinking about Type A people when he said that. They barrel into the office like they’re racing for a pot of gold, and they never seem to lose momentum. It’s as if they’re driven by a motor that never shuts off.

We each have our own understanding of what it means to have a Type A personality, but what does this term really mean and where did it come from? It actually started in a waiting room shared by a pair of cardiologists. The doctors noticed that their chairs didn’t have wear on the backs as expected–the wear was only visible on the front edge of the seats and the armrests, suggesting that patients were literally waiting on the edge of their seats, ready to jump up the second their names were called.

So, the cardiologists–Doctors Friedman and Rosenman–wanted to find out if the strange wear pattern on their chairs was because impatient people are more prone to heart disease. They discovered that their hunch was correct. They also found that people’s personalities tend to lean in one of two directions, which they labeled Type A and Type B.

Most think of Type A people as driven and highly strung and Type B people as carefree and even-keeled, but there’s so much more to it. Type As, in particular, are often misunderstood, as we just don’t understand the motivation behind their behavior.

To fully grasp what it means to be Type A, you need to hear it from the horse’s mouth. Don’t take my word for it–let’s see what they have to say:

1. We believe that winning is the only option.
We’re really hard on ourselves. Our desire to do our best often morphs into a desire to be the best. After all, if someone else does something better than us, then we mustn’t have been trying hard enough, right? This ensures that even the most mundane activities become a competition.

2. We live and die by our goals.
We don’t do anything “just because.” There’s an end aim for everything. That morning cup of coffee? The goal is to wake up. Half an hour of Pokemon Go at lunch? It’s about squeezing in some exercise and capturing more Pokemon than our friend down the hall. Heaven help anyone who slows us down or gets in our way. We’re nothing if we don’t reach our goals.

3. We’re always stressed.
Achieving our goals is so important to us that we often get stressed out about our progress. It’s that specter of wasted time or missed opportunities hanging over our heads that gets us all riled up, which can be really hard on our emotional intelligence (EQ).

4. We squeeze something into every possible moment. It may seem hypocritical that we’re sometimes late even though the rest of the time we’re impatiently drumming our fingers, waiting for meetings to start on time. The problem is that we try to squeeze a task into every possible minute, and sometimes we overdo it. In our determination to avoid downtime, we sometimes inadvertently create downtime for other people.

5. We want you to get to the point.
Skip the long preamble; if we have questions, we’ll ask. There’s no need to waste time on the setup when you have something important to tell us–just tell us. The theme here is efficiency; we’re interested in hearing the main points so we can begin taking action.

6. We hate to wait. We don’t hate being stuck at a red light or cooling our heels in a doctor’s waiting room because we think we’re too good to wait. We just like to be efficient with our time and don’t like things getting in our way. Every minute spent waiting is a minute we could have spent doing something productive. It’s a minute that we’ll never get back.

7. We’re conscientious.
Like “later,” “good enough” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Things are either right or they’re wrong. And they always, always have to be right. No matter what we’re doing, we care too much to settle for mediocrity.

8. We multitask. We’re not being rude, and we’re not bored. We just have a sense that the value of our day is measured by how much we get done, and we accomplish more when we do two (or more!) things at once.

9. We have a tough time relaxing. Relaxation isn’t a measurable goal, and it feels like a waste of time when nothing is getting done. It’s very difficult for us to sit around and “just be”; instead, we prefer to be actively “becoming” whatever lies at the end of our current ambition. Anything else amounts to lost time.

10. We have an unrealistic sense of urgency. From our perspective, “now” is the only time that exists. There’s no sense in putting something off till another time. While that’s often a good thing, we tend to give trivial issues a greater sense of urgency than they deserve.

11. We follow a schedule. Our time is carefully orchestrated so that each day we accomplish what we intended. Again like “later,” “whenever” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Everything gets scheduled and added to lists, and we take great satisfaction in ticking all the boxes.

12. We’re restless. Our motors are always running, so when we have to idle, that excess energy manifests in various nervous habits, such as fidgeting or biting our nails. Don’t worry, we’re not freaking out. This is normal behavior for us.

Bringing It All Together

We know that we can be awfully hard on everybody, but we’re even harder on ourselves. This may be difficult to see because no one else is privy to the perfectionist that’s goading or berating our every move inside our heads. Just know this: We care–we care a lot–and we really are sorry if our personality makes us hard to get along with sometimes.

What other characteristics set Type A people apart? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Scientists In Last-Minute Scramble To Save Environmental Data Before Trump Takes Over

Scientists across the nation are in a frantic push to save as much environmental data as possible before a feared government information purge orchestrated by climate-change denier Donald Trump.

The Sierra Club on Thursday filed Freedom of Information Act requests, seeking information held by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy, Bloomberg reports. The organization is asking those agencies to turn over a multitude of documents, including data on greenhouse gas emissions and power plants. Even if the requests are ultimately denied, the move buys valuable extra time for a mounting effort to gather and preserve data before anything is lost.

“We’re interested in trying to download and preserve the information, but it’s going to take some time,” senior Sierra Club attorney Andrea Issod told Bloomberg. “We hope our request will be a counterweight to the coming assault on this critical pollution and climate data.”

Researchers fear that the incoming administration could wipe out important information on a broad range of environmental factors.

“There is no reason to think its efforts would be restricted to climate data alone,” Gretchen Goldman, a research director at the Union of Concerned Scientists, told the Pacific Standard. She’s concerned about data on animals, particularly research by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on endangered or threatened species.

“There are a lot more eyes on climate, whereas with federal endangered species science, there are a smaller number of people looking at it and there are fewer data,” making it more vulnerable, she added.

Fears about data purges were sparked when Trump’s transition team reached out to the U.S. Energy Department in December demanding the names of employees and contract experts working on environmental and climate change issues. Observers worried that was the first step in a political witch hunt against those scientists. Trump has called climate change a “hoax” by the Chinese to “make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.” Incoming chief of staff Reince Priebus more recently said his boss believes it’s a “bunch of bunk.” Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt, who have been picked by Trump to lead the EPA, has expressed doubts that human-caused pollution is responsible for what’s happening in the environment.

While the Sierra Club presses its request for data, other organized efforts are continuing to save what can be preserved from government databases and post the information on independent websites. A major part of that effort, DataRefuge, is headquartered at the University of Pennsylvania’s Program in the Environmental Humanities. Other efforts include Guerrilla Archiving and Climate Mirror to save environmental information, and the End of Term Web Archive, which attempts to save as many records as possible from outgoing presidential administrations.

Data purges and manipulation have been carried out by other administrations. Under President George W. Bush, the EPA moved to shut down some of its research libraries, reducing access to important information. The administration was also accused by the Union of Concerned Scientists of suppressing or distorting research by government scientists or contractors at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Canada’s former conservative government was responsible for purging significant fishery and ocean data.

Trump and his supporters have been “salivating at the possibility of dismantling federal climate research programs for years. It’s not unreasonable to think they would want to take down the very data that they dispute,” Michael Halpern of the Union for Concerned Scientists told The Washington Post in a recent email. “Scientists are right to preserve data and archive websites before those who want to dismantle federal climate change research programs storm the castle.”

Winter

Winter is a three-month period of time that represents a pause in the activity of life. Great lakes, ponds, and streams freeze over; the earth grows hard and unreceptive. Tree sap stops flowing. Even the air becomes dense, slow to move, and heat stealing. Yet, not everything is as it appears to be!

The pervasive stillness and deep silence of winter are powers every bit as great as are the explosive forces of spring and summer, only different. After all, what is a glacier but a vast frozen river crawling its way through time? Both are forms of water whose unstoppable might can carve their way through solid rock! So, how can we channel this power of winter and use it to let go of whatever stands between us and the higher life we desire?

Winter is the time of the year when the forces of nature assume their most passive form. But we are discovering here that passive does not mean powerless! Consider the micro-pause between each beat of the heart. Is the heart less alive, made less potent for the brief rest it takes in its own beating? Of course not! In each such moment of its repose we could just as easily say that it is gathering itself for its next pulsation. In other words, its temporary passive state is actually a measured act of preparation. So it is with the “heart” of winter.

The better we understand this unique power of being passive–and how it serves as the secret consort of all things active–the more we grow in the faith we need to be wisely passive toward whatever fears remain in us about letting go of our false self. This is why, during the dark days of winter, we should take time each day–as often as possible–to quietly return to the living Light that dwells in the center of ourselves.

By gathering our attention in this way, and bringing the whole of ourselves into the heart of this interior stillness, we not only collect our own forces, as nature herself is doing, but much more: in this deliberate act of gathering ourselves–and for the conscious sense of quiet contentment we find within it–we are also being released from the false idea that the source of our strength and security can be found somewhere outside us.

The great French author, philosopher, and Nobel Prize winner, Albert Camus, knew the power of this truth now revealed. He also realized its liberating potential. In the following carefully chosen words, see how beautifully he tells us not to fear any season of life wherein we find ourselves feeling empty, alone, or without any Light in our life. He writes: “In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me lay an invincible summer.”

Once we start to see, to know in our innermost heart, that life itself is already complete, we can let go of whatever–or whoever–would have us believe otherwise.

Old attachments and their long-standing aches are now seen for being what they have always been: appendages of days gone by, worthless to the Higher Self we have agreed to become and by whose stillness we realize this need for a wholly new valuation of our own soul.

Now is the season to die to discontent, to withdraw our consent to live with any thoughts or feelings that would convince us it’s necessary to live in conflict or confusion.

The winter season can be the most challenging in terms of learning to channel its powers to help us let go. But, we may also have this timeless assurance: we are really created to enter into the perfect stillness from which we came. And for our return home–by entering into the bare infinity that is the center of our True Self–we arrive where we have always longed to be … without ever having had to set out. Here we make this last, glad discovery: the task of letting go, of separating ourselves from who and what we need no longer be, has already been done for us.

Sephora Is Selling An Eyeshadow Named ‘Druggie’

There are moments when it’s important to marshal as much evidence as possible to back up an argument. And then there are moments like this.

Sephora is selling a new shade of eyeshadow called “Druggie.

The company describes the shade as “metallic purple with violet shift,” and it is part of Urban Decay’s “Afterdark” eyeshadow palette. Now, we get that fashion is an art form, even in a globally commodified context, and far be it for us to stomp on creative expression.

But by the time you have finished reading this article, it’s likely that somebody in the United States will have died of an opioid overdose. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 500 people, many of them young, are dying every week. Every 15 minutes, a new dead body is turning up in an emergency room, making orphans of children, breaking the hearts of parents and grandparents, the scourge of an entire generation.

Responding to complaints, Sephora has apologized but has not said it will drop the name. “We deeply apologize to anyone who was offended by the name of this shade. Please DM us for more information,” the company tweeted Friday in reply to a protest.

When reached by The Huffington Post, Sephora had this to say: “We deeply apologize to anyone who was offended by the name of this shade. We would never seek to do that. The shade was in a limited edition palette and was not planned to be re-ordered.”

HuffPost has reached out to Urban Decay and is awaiting comment.

Ryan Hampton, a recovery advocate for Facing Addiction told HuffPost that, while the apology is “a step in the right direction, Sephora clearly needs an education on substance use disorders. The recovery community is standing at the ready, and it’s our hope that their CEO not only pulls this product immediately but joins the national fight to face addiction.”

Still, Urban Decay’s ‘Druggie’ eyeshadow points out a big problem in the fashion and beauty industries, which have long histories of glamorizing addiction, even in the midst of the nation’s drug epidemic.

Hampton told HuffPost that Sephora said it would be meeting next week to decide how to handle the situation.

In the meantime, here’s a petition to help nudge them in the right direction.

Playing Botticelli

Godiva Blue thinks she controls the world she has created for her daughter Dylan and herself in a neglected corner of North Florida. While her fellow college activists have become Reagan-era yuppies, Godiva-an elementary-school janitor who is also an avant-garde artist and avowed nonconformist-staunchly refuses to compromise her ideals. Then one day she glances at the wanted posters hanging in her local post office and recognizes the face of a man she hasn’t seen since 1969: Dylan’s father. Shaken, Godiva grabs the poster and takes it home. When 15-year-old Dylan, already secretly chafing against her mother’s out-sized personality, finds the photograph, the discovery rocks the very foundation of their relationship. Fueled by simmering adolescent resentment, Dylan sets out across America to look for the father she’s never known. Left behind and powerless to protect her daughter, Godiva must finally confront the choices she made long ago. By turns funny, scary and reflective, Playing Botticelli follows Godiva and Dylan deep into the uncharted territories of their hearts as they seek that elusive balance between autonomy and family love? Trevor Noah: Donald Trump Ran For President Just To Avoid His Sons

President-elect Donald Trump claims he’s dealing with potential conflicts of interest by handing his multibillion-dollar real estate and licensing company off to his two adult sons, Donald Jr. and Eric.

Trevor Noah suspects there’s a sinister reason why he’s doing it.

During Wednesday’s news conference, Trump said his sons would be running the company in a very professional manner, adding, “They’re not going to discuss it with me.”

Noah expressed skepticism Thursday on “The Daily Show.”

“They’re not going to discuss it with you for eight years?” Noah said. “What if the only reason Trump ran for president was so that he wouldn’t have to talk to his sons for four years? Maybe that’s the entire reason.”

Four Uncommon Ways to Clear Your Mind and Make Big Decisions

What are some tips for battling decision-fatigue? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Jenny Blake, Author of PIVOT: The Only Move That Matters is Your Next One, on Quora.

Decision-fatigue refers to the phenomenon that, like willpower, our ability to make decisions throughout the day diminishes without proper recharging. When mid-Pivot and asking life’s biggest questions, we are often overwhelmed by smaller decisions and things that might not have registered on our radar in the past. Or conversely, we’re so bogged down by small day-to-day decisions that we don’t have the space to ask bigger Pivot questions about what we really want and what next steps would resonate most.

To refresh your mind, I recommend the following:

  • Don’t ask the same giant questions every day (ie: Should I quit my job?). Give yourself a period of time where you don’t have to decide at all, perhaps while you’re researching options. Revisit the decision at specific intervals of your choosing, but not on a daily monkey-mind basis.
  • Create routines for as much as you can in your life – morning routines, scheduling exercise for the same recurring days/times, evening wind down rituals. What recharges you? The more you can create routines around these things, the less you will find yourself debating what to do when throughout the day (gobbling up precious mental bandwidth).
  • Write your questions down.
  • Go with your gut! We actually do know the answer to more than we think – on decisions large and small. If you find yourself debating unproductively, ask: what does my gut say?

This question originally appeared on Quora. – the knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights. You can follow Quora on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+.

Wisconsin Senator Puts The Squeeze On Almond Milk With Her ‘Dairy Pride Act’

Sen. Tammy Baldwin will fight for milk until the cows come home.

Baldwin, a Democrat from Wisconsin, otherwise known as America’s Dairyland, introduced the Dairy Pride Act on Thursday to fight back “against non-dairy products that are mislabeled as milk, yogurt and cheese,” a practice Baldwin says “hurts our dairy farmers.

Passage of the bill would mean all nondairy items now labeled as some form of dairy product, including the health-conscious community’s beloved almond milk, would need to undergo name changes. Plant-based cheddar-like nondairy brick?

The bill would support American dairy businesses and “protect the integrity of milk” by enforcing label restrictions on nondairy options to milk, yogurt and cheese.

Though Food and Drug Administration regulations define dairy products as coming from dairy animals, alternatives remain on the market, often labeled using dairy-specific terms. Baldwin’s bill targets those products.

“Imitation products have gotten away with using dairy’s good name for their own benefit,” the act states.

Still, there’s growing evidence that American consumers are loving their options, despite dairy’s good name.

Almond milk sales rose 250 percent in five years, according to a 2016 consumer report by market-research firm Nielsen. Other milk alternatives, such as cashew and coconut, have also seen increased popularity, reports the Financial Times.

Meanwhile, dairy milk consumption has been on the decline for decades. Department of Agriculture data show that Americans drink 37 percent less milk today than they did in the 1970s.

The proposed legislation promotes the health benefits of dairy and suggests that labeling plant-based alternatives as “milk,” “cheese” or “yogurt” could be confusing for consumers, conveying “a nutritional equivalency that is not accurate.”

While calcium is an important part of a balanced diet, and current federal dietary guidelines suggest that adult women and men consume three cups of dairy each day, the best way to get enough calcium remains a source of debate. As the Harvard School of Public Health points out, there are many nondairy sources of calcium that can be included in your diet.

If the bill passes, we’re eagerly awaiting the alternative names for almond milk. Almond juice? Almond sweat? Aqueous almonds? To be honest, we’re not sure what else to call it.

Obamacare Repeal Would Give 400 Super-Rich U.S. Households A Giant Tax Cut

Repealing Obamacare would give 400 of the richest families in America a tax cut worth an average of $ 7 million each, even as it yanks health insurance away from low- and middle-income Americans.

That may sound like a harsh way of characterizing repeal. But it’s an accurate one, according to a new report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

The Affordable Care Act called for a lot of new government spending, in the form of tax credits to help people pay for insurance and funding for states that expand eligibility for Medicaid. To help pay for all of these new outlays, the law imposed a “surtax” that basically expands the existing Medicare payroll tax.

The surtax applies exclusively to incomes above $ 250,000 a year for couples and $ 200,000 for individuals ― which means that only people with such high incomes end up paying it.

Full repeal, which President-elect Donald Trump and Republican leaders in Congress began to pursue formally last week, would eliminate the spending and the taxes. A series of analyses have already made clear what that would mean in practice: More than 20 million people would lose insurance, while America’s millionaires would get a windfall.

But there are millionaires and then there are multimillionaires ― and with this new report, researchers at the Center on Budget decided to look exclusively at some of the latter.

They did this by using data from the Brookings-Urban Tax Policy Center and, separately, from the IRS, in order to figure out what the tax cut would mean for the 400 households in America with the highest tax liabilities. On average, these families have incomes of $ 318 million a year, according to the report, which means the $ 7 million tax cut they would get is roughly equivalent to increasing their incomes by 2 percent.

Meanwhile, the total revenue loss from giving a tax cut to those 400 families comes to $ 2.8 billion a year. According to the center, that’s about what it costs to finance tax credits for 800,000 people living in the District of Columbia and 20 of the smallest states.

Of course, Republicans have promised to replace the Affordable Care Act with some other coverage scheme. And recently several GOP senators suggested leaving some of the law’s taxes in place, at least temporarily, just to make sure the replacement scheme has sufficient funding to pay for itself.

But getting the rest of the party to go along with that seems like a long shot. Reducing taxes on the wealthy has been a longtime GOP priority. And last year, when congressional Republicans crafted a prototype of a repeal bill, those upper-income taxes were among the Obamacare provisions that the legislation would have eliminated.

In fact, there’s no guarantee Republicans can even agree on an Obamacare alternative, which means it’s entirely possible that the alternative to the health care law will turn out to be nothing.

Relationships That Have Roots are the Anchors in Our Lives

By Carolyn Massiah
UCF Forum columnist

The view in my backyard is a conservation area full of various types of trees. As the seasons pass, the trees lose their leaves and even some of their branches, but the trees remain in large part due to their sturdy roots.

To the side of my house is a concrete light pole. It doesn’t have any leaves and branches, obviously, but it is more susceptible to being blown down during a violent storm because it lacks the strong roots that mature trees have to anchor them through a storm.

When I compare and contrast the tree and the pole, I know I would much rather be a tree.

Both trees and light poles stand above the blanket of shrubs and bushes below. However, this is where the similarities end.

Many light poles are inorganic entities of concrete or metal, created through some form of human intervention. The shape and size in which these poles are created will forever be their shape and size as inorganic entities will not change during their existence unless there is additional intervention.

Trees, on the other hand, are organic. They are living organisms that continually change. They will lose and gain leaves and branches but they will also grow and mature throughout their existence. Continual growth and development is what I want for my own life. This is why I would rather be a tree than a light pole.

Unfortunately, positive growth sometimes must come from negative changes. Each year trees weather the change of seasons. With those changes in season, leaves come and they go and sometimes there may be seasons when the trees may not have any leaves at all on their branches.

The same can be said for our own lives. There are people that become attached to you as much as leaves are attached to branches. However, as the seasons change in our lives those people may disappear. Sometimes it seems several disappear at once and you are left bare much like trees in winter. For whatever reasons, those individuals were only meant to be in your life for a season. Yes, it hurts when those who you thought were going to stay forever leave your life before you are ready, but it is the nature of our organic lives.

Unfortunately, you never know how strong any branch will be until it is tested in the most violent of storms. Some branches appear thick and sturdy while they may actually be hollow or rotten to the core. If you step out on the branch for support because of its sturdy appearance, you might be disappointed and shocked when that branch does not support you but breaks and hurts you instead.

The same can be said for our own lives. There are people that we have relied upon and with whom we have built a long-term relationship. We have truly let them into our lives. However, as the weight of whatever burden you need bared by them increases, that friend gives under the load and breaks away from you in a permanent and irrevocable manner. Yes, it hurts but just as leaves come for a reason during a season, branches are there for those life-long lessons that we will take with us long after the branches have broken and been swept away. That is the nature of our organic lives.

So based on this, you might now be wondering why I would choose to be a tree instead of a pole. One word: roots!

Because trees are organic living creatures their roots continue to grow and strengthen as the tree grows and matures. When a storm comes, the roots anchor trees and allow trees to bend but not break in the storm.

Poles do not have that same anchor support. That is why we see more poles than trees down after severe hurricanes.

The same can be said for our own lives. Think about those individuals in your life that have been your anchor and support through the good and the bad. Often, much like a tree’s roots, those individuals do all of their work out of the view of others with no need of public acknowledgement. They are the blessings that we cannot overlook in our lives.

After comparing and contrasting the two, if I had to choose I would rather be a tree if it means that I will continue to have the blessings of roots just waiting to support me and feed me as I work to develop and mature throughout my existence.

Doctors Want To Learn More About Treating Transgender Patients, Survey Shows

One in three transgender patients reports experiencing serious discrimination or bias when seeking medical care, even when that care is unrelated to their transgender status, according to a recent survey of nearly 30,000 people, released in December.

These negative experiences ― which ranged from verbal harassment, physical or sexual assault and refusal of treatment, to having to educate doctors about transgender people ― degrade the overall standard of care that transgender people receive, no matter what health care needs they may have. In fact, 23 percent of survey respondents said they skipped seeing a doctor, even though they needed to, for fear of mistreatment.

While some of these negative interactions in health care may stem from discriminatory attitudes on the part of medical care professionals, a survey published this week, this one among endocrinologists, reveals that doctors feel they lack the training they need to feel confident when treating transgender patients.

The online survey, which was sent to members of the Endocrine Society, is the first to measure American doctors’ confidence levels and willingness to treat transgender patients, explained lead author Caroline Davidge-Pitts, an endocrinologist who specializes in transgender and intersex medicine at the Mayo Clinic.

Survey reveals the severe lack of training in transgender health care

The anonymous survey found that while 80 percent of hormone doctors have treated a transgender patient, 81 percent of them also said they had never received any training on the care of transgender patients.

Among program directors, 72 percent said they provide some kind of education on transgender health topics, and 94 percent said this training is important. However, the program directors said they struggled to educate their fellows on these issues because they don’t have enough experienced faculty to teach the subject.

Davidge-Pitts hypothesized that some negative experiences between a transgender patient and caregiver come down to a doctor’s low confidence and competence in transgender health care, due to a lack of education or awareness. But she thinks that as transgender health care, which encompasses medicine, mental health, primary care and surgery, becomes a more common concentration in U.S. medical schools and health care facilities, transgender patients will start to report more positive interactions with medical experts.

Only about half of the 104 program directors of endocrinology fellowships responded to the survey, as did only 411 of the 6,992 doctors affiliated with the Endocrine Society. This could indicate a willingness only among transgender-friendly doctors to respond.

“There may be a slight positive bias with that, but I still think [the results] show promise,” said Davidge-Pitts. “What concerned me more was how many of our providers in the endocrinology world are seeing transgender patients with very little education behind them.”

Of the minority of doctors who said they did receive training, only 4 percent said they got it during medical school, while only 7 percent said they were trained during their residency. The majority of teachers who received specialization got it during their endocrinology fellowship (58 percent), while 53 percent learned more at local, national or international meetings.

One way to bridge the education gap, said Davidge-Pitts, would be an online course that could provide a standard curriculum to programs across the country about how to address transgender health care needs.

Lack of specific training is no excuse for discrimination

“When transgender people have a negative experience, it can just turn them away from any preventive care, or seeking care at all,” said M. Dru Levasseur, director of the Transgender Rights Project at Lambda Legal, a national LGBT nonprofit legal organization. “A lot of people wait for emergency care because they’re so afraid of going to the doctor.”

Lambda Legal was the first to cite the Affordable Care Act’s non-discrimination provisions in a federal lawsuit for the right to health care, regardless of sex or gender identity on behalf of transgender patients. The group’s client, Naya Taylor, had decided to resume hormone medication to treat her gender dysphoria, but her primary care doctor in rural Illinois told her she did not have enough experience to prescribe the medication to her. Taylor was eventually told by the clinic that it “does not have to treat people like you.”

Lambda Legal filed the lawsuit in 2014, but then dropped the case a few months later when Taylor died after a heart attack. They have since filed similar lawsuits, the most recent of which was against a New Jersey hospital for denying a transgender man a routine hysterectomy. But what Taylor’s case demonstrates, explained Levasseur, is that doctors should not be able to claim ignorance or a lack of expertise to deny hormone medication to transgender patients.

“I do think that medical schools need to provide better training so that physicians can be culturally and clinically competent,” Levasseur said. “But all the information they would need to care for a transgender person are available online for everybody, and there’s really no excuse for doctors to turn transgender people away from treatment.”

“It’s so important for people who are trained in endocrinology to know that part of their responsibility for the population they’re going to serve is to transgender people,” Levasseur concluded.

Trevor Noah Shows How Donald Trump Will Duck Press Conference Questions

Donald Trump is scheduled to give a press conference Wednesday ― his first as president-elect and, in fact, his first since July.

It’s liable to be a spectacle, but Trevor Noah predicts little actual news will come from what he calls “Presser Mania.”

“It’s the most powerful press in the world going up against the most powerful question-dodger of all time,” Noah said on Tuesday’s episode of “The Daily Show.”

The Comedy Central host then dressed up as Trump and invited the studio audience to fill in as journalists.

Spoiler alert: Most of Trump’s answers, according to Noah, will involve calling the person who asked the question “stupid.”

The Year of Courage

Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.
―Anais Nin

Years ago I gave up New Year’s Resolutions, because they always fell apart for me by March! Now instead I choose a theme each year – something I want to ponder, practice, and live into.

2016 was the year of noticing. I practiced noticing all year and got better and better at it – noticing small things and large patterns, how beautiful aging faces really are, and what people leave unsaid.

I’ve named 2017 the year of courage.

As we grow older, courage sometimes shows up in ways that are different from how it showed up in our younger years. For example, it took courage for my friend Joy to decide to stop downhill skiing. An excellent skier, she has loved skiing. And she’s past 70 and notices her reflexes have slowed down. She felt vulnerable and less confident the last couple of times she skiied. So – does her decision not to ski shrink or expand her life? I asked Joy. Her response was interesting. She said that although she thought it would shrink it, she now feels it actually expanded it. A good friend of hers fell and broke a leg skiing last year. Recovery has been slow and painful. “I had the courage to stop before that was me,” she said. And she’s recently started cross-country skiing, which she’d never tried before. “It’s a whole new skill,” she told me. “And I’m loving learning something new.”

Maybe it’s also true that as we age, the courage we need is different – not physical daring-type courage, but emotional and relational. Think of the courage to keep learning, to acknowledge when we don’t know, to see the humanity in someone we disagree with, to forgive.

I can already think of many ways I’m hoping to have courage this year:

  • To say “yes” to opportunities, challenges, life
  • To say “no” when I don’t want to do something
  • Not to be so sure I’m right about things
  • To listen deeply to people who have different views of things
  • To take care of myself, including eating less sugar
  • To create and participate in things that are a lot of fun
  • To stretch myself – keep learning
  • To speak up in the face of prejudice and injustice
  • To speak openly of spiritual matters
  • To love people deeply and well

Anne Lamott calls me to find new depths of courage:

“If there is one door in the castle you have been told not to go through, you must.
Otherwise, you’ll just be rearranging furniture in rooms you’ve already been in.”

What would be a good theme for your 2017? My friend Donna named her year “Simplify.” Before choosing courage, I considered curiosity, generosity and love. Somehow this quote tipped me to courage: “Without courage, wisdom bears no fruit.” ―Baltasar Gracian

COACHING QUESTIONS

  1. Consider choosing a theme for 2017.
  2. What will your theme for the new year be?
  3. How might it make 2017 a better year?
  4. Have a meaningful, fulfilling New Year!

Deconstructing Stigma: Picturing the Beauty in Life

Editor’s note: Deconstructing Stigma: A Change in Thought Can Change a Life is a public awareness campaign developed by McLean Hospital to spark conversation not only about behavioral and mental health but also about the stigma that surrounds it. The campaign features compelling stories from people across the United States who have been affected by mental illness, including Alan’s story below.

2017-01-11-1484099394-9768309-AlanS37blog.jpgDespite attempts to love and care for my mother, I never felt valued growing up. As a youth, I tried to take my own life. I wound up in a series of foster homes.

It has been a battle since I was 11 just to be here.

Generations of my family have battled mental illness. My grandfather, noted Red Sox centerfielder Jimmy Piersall, became the first sports figure to publicly declare his fight with bipolar disorder. I shared that diagnosis by the time I was 27.

There were manic episodes in my life where I could jump off a building as high as the sky and land on my feet, followed by depressive states where I was sadder than sad.

I would go on to try various medications to control my illness, but without success. In 2010, determined to break the cycle and take control of my life, I bought a gym membership and a pair of running shoes. I dropped 75 pounds. I began using a camera to capture the raw, beautiful emotions of the world as I see them.

You’ve got to find a way to like yourself. That’s a beginning. I’ve learned an active body builds a calmer mind.

Now I lead a community fitness group and have taken to social media to inspire others with positive thoughts, nutrition and fitness tips, and my zest for life.

The Lord is going to have to take me kicking and screaming now. I want to be a beacon of light and hope for others.

A Half-Dozen GOP Senators Just Fired A Big Warning Shot On Obamacare Repeal

Anxiety about repealing Obamacare without a replacement got a lot more visible in the U.S. Senate on Monday evening, as a half-dozen Republican senators called publicly for slowing down the process.

It’s not clear how strongly these senators feel about it, or whether they are willing to defy party leadership over how and when efforts to repeal Obamacare proceed.

But at least three other GOP senators have now expressed reservations about eliminating the Affordable Care Act without first settling on an alternative. That brings the total to nine ― well more than the three defections it would take to deprive Republicans of the majority they would likely need to get repeal through Congress.

At the very least, Monday’s statements suggest that taking President Barack Obama’s signature domestic policy off the books is unlikely to go as smoothly or as quickly as GOP leaders once hoped.

The change in the political environment has been perceptible, and relatively sudden. Following the election of Donald Trump in November, GOP leaders indicated they intended to move immediately on Obamacare repeal, using expedited procedures reserved for certain fiscal issues.

First, Congress would pass a budget resolution, instructing committees with jurisdiction over health care to write repeal legislation. Once that work was done, the House and Senate each would vote on the legislation, work out their differences, and send a bill to the White House, where Trump would presumably sign it.

The budget resolution is supposed to pass this week, and, as written, it calls for the committees to finish their work by Jan. 27 ― just a little more than two weeks from now.

But as the prospect of repealing Obamacare has suddenly ceased to be hypothetical, Republicans have confronted all sorts of questions ― not least among them what will happen to the roughly 20 million people getting insurance through the program right now.

Initially, GOP leaders responded by promising to let elements of Obamacare remain in place for a short time, setting up a transition period during which people who have Obamacare coverage would theoretically get to keep it. But over the past few days, several GOP senators have said that this “repeal-and-delay” strategy still leaves too much uncertainty about what would follow Obamacare, and have called for settling on a replacement plan ― or at least the outlines of one ― before voting on repeal.

On Monday, five of them put their protests on paper ― by introducing an amendment to the budget resolution that would push back that Jan. 27 date until March 3.

“Repeal and replace should take place simultaneously, and this amendment will give the incoming administration more time to outline its priorities,” Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said. “By exercising due diligence we can create a stable transition to an open health care marketplace that provides far greater choice and more affordable plans for the American people.”

The four other GOP senators behind the amendment are Bill Cassidy (La.), Susan Collins (Maine), Rob Portman (Ohio), and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska).

As a legal matter, the amendment wouldn’t mean much. Neither the old nor the new deadline would be binding, Capitol Hill aides said, and it’s entirely possible that Monday’s statement will prove an empty gesture.

Nor is it likely that one extra month would give Republicans enough time to settle on an Obamacare replacement.

But the decision to propose the amendment ― and to attach strong quotes to it ― could also indicate something more, as Jim Manley, longtime aide to former Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and before that the late Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), told The Huffington Post.

“The senators on this letter are smart enough to realize that the train is about to leave to station when it comes to repealing Obamacare without any alternative,” Manley said. “And they want to slow down the process by offering this amendment before the legislative process starts spiraling out of control.

“This letter is yet the latest indication that at least some Republicans realize that just simply repealing Obamacare without any viable alternative in place is completely unworkable and unrealistic and maybe just a little bit crazy,” Manley said.

The other big development on Monday was a statement from Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.). According to Talking Points Memo, Alexander said, “We have to take each part of it and consider what it would take to create a new and better alternative and then begin to create that alternative, and once it’s available to the American people, then we can finally repeal Obamacare.”

It’s difficult to know how far Alexander or other Republican senators are willing to go on slowing Obamacare repeal, particularly if they face intense pressure from party leaders and conservative activists.

Shortly after the election, for example, Alexander said that Republicans needed to put their replacement together before going forward with repeal. “What we need to focus on first is what we would replace it with and what are the steps we would take to do that,” he told reporters on Nov. 17. “I imagine [it] will take several years to completely make that sort of transition to make sure we do no harm, create a good health care system that everyone has access to and we repeal the parts of Obamacare that need to be repealed.”

But after Senate Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) indicated that repeal would include a transition period, Alexander got in line. “The American people expect us to” repeal, he told reporters in the Capitol on Dec. 1, endorsing the repeal and delay strategy. “I think Senator McConnell wants to make it an early item. And the important thing to emphasize is it’s just a beginning. … We want to start immediately, but it’ll take a matter of years to fully replace and rebuild the health care system that it has taken six years to damage.”

Alexander’s new statements would appear to suggest he’s still not comfortable with moving quickly. And that’s critical, given the role he would play in any Obamacare repeal effort, as a senior, widely respected member of the caucus ― and, more important, as chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, which has direct jurisdiction over health care legislation.

The reticence about junking Obamacare too hastily reflects certain realities that the GOP hasn’t really confronted until now. Different elements of the party have wildly different perspectives on what a new system should look like. And delivering the kind of financial protection most Americans want without dramatically reducing the number of people with insurance is going to be difficult, if not impossible, without the kind of federal spending most Republicans oppose.

Two senators proposing the budget amendment touched on those concerns. Cassidy, who is a physician, spoke specifically about the needs of people with serious medical problems ― the type of people who, in the years before Obamacare, could sometimes be denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions, or would run up against lifetime limits on benefits.

“As Obamacare is repealed and replaced, we must always keep in mind the mom with a breast lump who cannot afford Obamacare and wants something better but also needs to maintain her coverage,” Cassidy said. “This amendment will ensure adequate time is given to repeal Obamacare AND replace it with a substantive alternative that will work for her.”

Murkowski focused on importance making insurance widely available: “I remain committed to repealing the Affordable Care Act,” she said, “and I am equally committed to ensuring that all Alaskans and Americans, especially the most vulnerable among us and those in rural communities, have access to affordable, quality health care.”

Repealing Obamacare was a top priority for Trump during his campaign, and his call thrilled the millions of voters who say they are angry about the law. But Trump also vowed that “everybody has got to be covered,” which is not a promise that GOP leaders like House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Ohio) have endorsed.

Although polls have consistently shown pluralities of Americans disapprove of the law, those same polls have shown that most of its elements ― including not just protections for people with pre-existing conditions, but also tax credits for buying insurance ― to be highly popular.

Senate Republicans have seen those polls, just as they have heard from GOP governors in states that have expanded Medicaid eligibility using funding that Obamacare made available. Those governors, among them Gov. John Kasich (R-Ohio), have said that it’s important to make sure Republicans have an alternative ready to go before getting rid of Obamacare.

Meanwhile, three other GOP senators ― Tom Cotton (Ark.), John McCain (Ariz.), and Rand Paul (Ky.) ― have expressed reservations about repeal without a replacement, albeit for different reasons.

How Trump feels about all of this remains something of a mystery. On Monday evening, he and his advisers huddled with Capitol Hill Republicans over several matters. Afterwards, in response to a reporter’s question about the specifics of repealing and replacing Obamacare, Trump adviser Steve Bannon said they were “still thinking that through.”

Four Things You Need to Stop Putting Off

What are the things you should do before it is too late? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Nicolas Cole, Author & Entrepreneur, on Quora:

Here are four things you should do before it’s too late.

Create That Project

Whatever project you want to create, create it now. Because the part of you that wants to create it right now will not last forever. The book you write at 25 will be very different than the book you write at 30, and 35, and 40, and so on. As we change, our perspectives and feelings change as well. Create what you want to create right now, and capture this moment in time.

Love That Person

Do you connect with someone? Do you like someone? Even if you know, you won’t marry this person, or spend the rest of your life with this person, let yourself love them. Ride that wave together. You never know where that wave will take you–who knows, maybe you will end up together after all. But trust how you feel right now because that feeling won’t last forever, and the opportunity will be gone as fast as it presented itself.

Take That Leap

Is right now a unique time in your life? Do you have the chance to do something special–if you take the leap? What happens if you don’t take the leap? When will you ever get this chance again? Opportunities present themselves at the right times. They are never perfect–an opportunity is called an opportunity because it asks you to take a risk yourself.

Work That Skill

Guess what? If you don’t work whatever it is you want to get better at today, then you won’t be any better at it tomorrow. And if you continue to make the decision not to get better today, then tomorrow will never come. And before you know it, that skill either will no longer interest you, or you will not be able to (physically, mentally, etc.) learn that skill’s foundation. Learn it now.

France Bans Spanking Kids With New Law

A new law in France is making it illegal to spank children.

On Dec. 22, the “Egalité et citoyenneté” (”Equality and citizenship”) bill officially passed in parliament. The bill included a section that bans parents from inflicting punishment that is “cruel, degrading, or humiliating” and explicitly forbids corporal punishment.

This section, which was added to the bill in July, makes corporal punishment a civil offense, so parents would not face criminal charges. But lawmakers and advocates believe it is an important symbolic change.

“It sets forth a clear principle, which should be repeated to fathers and mothers and inform their future behavior,” stated the explanatory memorandum to the amendment.

“This law is a very strong symbolic act to make parents understand just how all violence can be harmful for the child,” French anti-spanking advocate Dr. Gilles Lazimi told the Telegraph. “Above all, it removes the notion of a threshold: There is no small or big violence. There is violence, full stop.”

The topic of corporal violence and specifically spanking has been the subject of much research. A study published in the Journal of Family Psychology in 2016 analyzed 50 years of research involving over 160,000 children and found that kids who were spanked were more likely to exhibit antisocial behavior, aggression, cognitive difficulties and mental health issues. They were also more likely to defy their parents.

Once the law goes into effect, France will become the 52nd country to ban corporal punishment.

The United States has no laws forbidding corporal punishment in the home, though 31 states have passed laws banning it in schools.

Elizabeth Warren Plans To Introduce Bill To Resolve Trump’s Conflicts of Interest

WASHINGTON ― Congressional Democrats led by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) plan to introduce legislation on Monday that would require President-elect Donald Trump to divest his business holdings in order to avoid conflicts of interest while serving in the White House.

The President Conflict of Interest Act would require the president and vice president, their spouses and any minor or dependent children to divest all personal financial holdings that could create a conflict of interest, and to place the resulting assets into a blind trust governed by an independent trustee.

The bill would also formally implement the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause, which bans government officials from receiving gifts or payments from foreign governments, by declaring the violation of financial conflict-of-interest laws and provisions by the president to be considered a high crime or misdemeanor punishable by impeachment.

Trump is set to enter office with an unprecedented array of financial conflicts of interest related to his multibillion-dollar Trump Organization. He has failed to specify how he will separate himself from the business that bears his name in order to avoid conflicts of interest. Instead, he and his aides have simply declared that “the president can’t have a conflict of interest,” an assertion that is not true.

After stating during his presidential campaign that he would have nothing to do with his business if elected, Trump has met with his foreign business partners, touted them to foreign leaders and appointed his adult children to the executive committee of his presidential transition despite plans for them to assume control of the Trump Organization. His hotel in Washington, D.C., pitched foreign governments on booking hotel rooms to curry favor with the Trump administration.

In December, Trump postponed a press conference where he was supposedly going to announce plans for resolving his conflicts of interest. A new press conference was announced for Jan. 11, but it has not been billed as an announcement of any plans to disentangle himself from his business.

“The American people deserve to know that the President of the United States is working to do what’s best for the country ― not using his office to do what’s best for himself and his businesses,” Warren said in a statement. “The only way for President-elect Trump to truly eliminate conflicts-of-interest is to divest his financial interests by placing them in a blind trust. This has been the standard for previous presidents, and our bill makes clear the continuing expectation that President-elect Trump do the same.”

The bill, which has 23 additional Democratic co-sponsors, would also require presidential appointees to recuse themselves from any decisions that relate to the president’s financial holdings, and would require the president to disclose his tax returns. House Democrats led by Rep. Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) introduced identical legislation.

The push for divestment stems from the fact that current ethics laws do not apply the rules for resolving conflicts of interest to the president or the vice president. Presidential appointees are required to disentangle themselves from financial arrangements that their work as a public servant could conflict with. In these cases, true blind trusts governed by independent trustees are required.

While the president is not bound by this law, past presidents have acted as though the conflict-of-interest statutes applied to them by separating themselves from any financial holdings that might have caused a conflict. During his single term in office, President Jimmy Carter placed stewardship of his peanut farm in the hands of an independent trustee. Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush all placed their holdings into true blind trusts.

Trump, meanwhile, has given no hint that he will divest from his business. Instead, he has talked about handing off control to his adult sons, Donald Jr. and Eric Trump, while maintaining a financial stake in the business. This means that any future payment, deal or sale involving the Trump Organization would redound to the personal financial benefit of the president.

“Every recent president in modern history has taken steps to ensure his financial interests do not conflict with the needs of the American people,” Clark said in a statement. “The American people need to be able to trust that the President’s decisions are based on the best interests of families at home, and not the President’s financial interests.”

Things They Didn’t Tell Us at My Fancy High School

2017-01-08-1483915002-3317669-ScreenShot20170108at2.04.33PM.png

I’ll admit it, I was blessed to go to one of those super-posh, elite boys’ schools where someone with gray hair stands up in chapel and says “Gentlemen, someday you will rule the world.” Or something like that. I couldn’t entirely hear him over my handheld electronic football game. And mumbled recitations of the Shema.

But some people clearly took it seriously. Just in my time there, we had the guy who runs ABC, the Mayor of Los Angeles, the creator of Mad Men. We only had 129 boys in our graduating class and one has already had a studio movie made about his life story. And he wasn’t even a serial killer. Did I mention, I went to school in Los Angeles not Central Florida? Though in Central Florida’s defense, there was one movie about a murderer from my school. But it starred Judd Nelson, so all in all, we’ve had a pretty decent homicidal maniac-free run.

Our class slogan was “Greatness!’ Yes, we had a class slogan. I always thought it should be “Where Smart Boys Go to Feel Stupid.” But I can also see where theirs is slightly more aspirational. That said, even I left there with the wholly unearned cockiness of youth, convinced that the adult world would naturally bow before us. The following are some observations of what my adulthood to this point has actually been like. It’s the things they didn’t teach us (and we may never have left high school if they had.)

You will fail at life. Often. Often spectacularly. Sometimes even in Deadline Hollywood with a photo so unflattering you’d think the story was about exotic chin-removing techniques.

You will work hard, try your best, and sometimes still get fired. Occasionally, by friends. Sometimes for not having been on Friends. But you will have a Zen approach to being fired and never think about it again. I’m sorry. I meant to say, you will think about it all the time, dream about it more, and even momentarily consider purchasing an online voodoo doll-making kit from the set decorator of Gilligan’s Island.

Someday, you will start going to more funerals than weddings. This is not long after you’d gotten used to the idea that you were going to more weddings than Taco Tuesdays.

You will cry over the notion of your kids leaving not long after they arrive. Then again, when it’s actually close. Then again, when watching the end of Toy Story 3.

You will always think you are the same age as the cutest girl at Starbucks. At least until she says, “Excuse me, Sir, I think you dropped your banana.”

You will remember the names of every peripheral character from every Brady Bunch episode and all the ’75 Cincinnati Reds, but have no recollection of the name of the person you met with half an hour ago.

You may reach a point where you are more concerned with finding your voice or protecting your legacy than making money. While still being acutely aware that neither voice nor legacy pay for juice boxes or a condo in Tarzana.

You will never wear your high school letterman’s jacket again, except to a 50’s costume party. Also, you’ll never go to a 50’s costume party.

There is no moment where you definitively feel “I’ve made it!”

There is no moment where you definitively feel “I’m a grown up.” In fact, no matter how old your kids get, you’re still always secretly wondering when the real grown ups are going to get there. If not to take over, at least to drop off the handbook.

You can have almost no friends in grade school and 25,000 Twitter followers now and both feel roughly the same.

Unless you graduated from Trump University, nobody cares where you went to college. Believe me, I try to wedge Brown into sentences that have nothing to do with Brown. Like that. See, you didn’t care.

Over time, your body will change. You will spend a lot of time trying to get back to your high school weight. You will spend a lot of time trying to get back to Meat Loaf’s high school weight. At some point, you may even accept that you probably won’t play shirtless frisbee in an Abercrombie ad.

Along similar lines, you may find yourself trapped in your own wet suit in a public beach bathroom. You may also momentarily consider blowing a drifter to get you out of said wet suit. The first time. The second time is more common beach courtesy. Right? That’s what he told me.

Friends will marry people you don’t like. Friends will marry people you like too much. Classmates will die way younger than predicted by any actuarial chart or senior page quotes about living forever.

The girlfriend you profess eternal love to on your senior page will almost definitely not be your girlfriend by the time you see the proofs of your senior page.

Your real soulmate will never be who you thought it was going to be.

But unlike all romantic comedies and Nicholas Sparks books, the success of your marriage is less a function of how cute you met or the intensity of your passion. And way more a function of whether you remembered to go to Trader Joe’s or unload the dishwasher.

2017-01-08-1483915053-4885261-ScreenShot20170108at2.06.41PM.png

Your back may someday be so tight you sleep on a heating pad and a gallon of Ben-Gay. And no, you didn’t suffer a ski accident. Or even a pickle-jar opening mishap.

You’ll learn that how people present themselves to the world or on social media isn’t always how they feel inside. Often it’s the polar opposite. You may learn that, too.

Your professional life may feel like high school. But not in the sense that hard work equals good grades equals selective college of your choice. No, more in the cool, popular crowd still gets rewarded for being cool and popular and having nice hair. And for living in the Palisades and vacationing with development execs.

Similarly, people who never opened a book in high school will make exponentially more money than you will. Never underestimate the words “family real estate.”

You may, at some point, suffer from depression, severe depression or Pennant Fever. As important as the names Martha Quinn and Kajagoogoo were in your teen years, the names Lexapro and Xanax will be in your forties.

You’ll romanticize literally everything that happened before you were 30.

You’ll stop eating because you’re hungry but to blunt the pain of general existence. Or because Baby Ruths make you feel better than carrots.

You’ll need to learn to talk to girls. Not just at them or about them.

You will reach an age where you think women in their fifties are “cute.”

And an age where your body will suddenly fail you in ways that didn’t existed. Like gallstones. And liver failure. And skin so yellow that people think you’re Ned Flanders’ stunt double.

You’ll eventually realize that your babies are only babies for an incredibly short time. And that most of the time you know them will be as fellow adults.

Some days breaking a half hour sitcom story feels like forever. And everything else literally just flies by.

You’ll fail more than you succeed. And bouncing back from failure will sneakily be your greatest success.

You may knowingly experience pain because it’s better to feel the panoply of human emotions than it is to band-aid over them with bong hits and Peanut M & M’s.

And with any luck, you may someday reach a point where you don’t give a shit what anyone thinks about. You’ll present yourself to the world as you honestly are without trying to put up a facade of success or well-being. And you’ll be okay with that. That, I think, is where true freedom lies. And I can’t wait to get there.

Zombies Could Wipe Us Out In 100 Days, Research Says

Life with zombies wouldn’t last long. A new study concludes that ravening zombie hordes would reduce Earth’s population to no more than 200 survivors within 100 days.

The research, published in the University of Leicester’s peer-reviewed Journal of Physics Special Topics, is a tongue-in-cheek analysis by physics students of a mathematical model that predicts the spread of disease. But in the model, zombies serve a deadly serious function: to simulate how quickly a virus could wipe out the planet.

The model divides the population into three categories: those susceptible to the infection, those infected, and those who have either died or recovered. The model then considers the rates at which infections spread as individuals in the population come into contact with each other.

An initial study assumed that each zombie would have a life span of 20 days and 90 percent success at finding and infecting one human per day — which would make the zombie virus twice as contagious as the Black Death pathogen. Within 20 days, a single zombie could trigger a pandemic. A population of 7.5 billion people could be reduced within 100 days to just 100 to 200 survivors, with 190 million zombies still roaming around.

Relax, that’s the worst-case scenario. It assumes that humans would continue to be easy for zombies to find. In fact, humans would become more difficult to find because there would be fewer of them, and they would learn how to avoid the zombies. Also, humans would fight back.

A more optimistic scenario found better odds for humanity, even while increasing the zombie’s expected life span to a year. In the more positive mathematical model analyzed by the physics students in another paper, taking into account human reproduction and a 10 percent chance that each human could kill one zombie a day, the human population still fell to a few hundred. But the zombies all died off after 1,000 days, and humanity began to recover after 10,000 days (a little over 27 years).

The new parameters, such as “people having children within the nightmare scenario … made human survival more feasible,” a statement from the British university noted.

New Chair Of Senate Indian Affairs Committee Wanted DAPL Protests Shut Down

The new chair of the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs is a man who has placed himself squarely in opposition to the Native American-led movement to fight the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota.

John Hoeven (R-N.D.) said in a statement Thursday he was “honored” to be serving as chairman and noted that he planned to make “economic growth” a priority. He announced his election in a joint statement with committee Vice Chairman Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.).

The committee’s purpose is to “study the unique problems of American Indian, Native Hawaiian, and Alaska Native peoples and to propose legislation to alleviate these difficulties,” its website states.

But Hoeven has condemned protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline, a movement led by members of the Standing Rock Sioux and joined by other Native Americans and allies from across the country. Protesters say a leak would be catastrophic for the drinking water of the Standing Rock Sioux and others, and argue that the construction violates an 1851 treaty with the U.S. government.

In November, Hoeven characterized the protests as sometimes “violent” and called for President Barack Obama to approve the pipeline’s final easement and put an end to the demonstrations.

Of course, there are Native Americans, including some members of the Standing Rock Sioux, who do not agree with the protesters. But the fight against the pipeline is arguably the most prominent Native American-led social movement in recent history, and the protests have become emblematic of the fight for Native American rights.

Hoeven’s views on the issue are also at odds with Udall’s. After federal authorities announced a halt to the pipeline’s construction in December, Udall applauded the decision.

“Over the last seven months, thousands of people, including Indian nations from New Mexico and across North America, have demonstrated their deep concern about the lack of consultation by the federal government and the potential environmental hazard this pipeline poses for the water,” Udall said in a statement.

While many people celebrated the decision to halt construction as a major victory, it’s not totally clear what the future holds for the project, especially with incoming president-elect Donald Trump. Last month, Trump’s transition team said he supported the pipeline and would review options when he takes office.

10 Powerful Ways To Create Your Own Happiness

2017-01-05-1483642794-489505-PowerfulWaysToCreateYourOwnHappinessHP.jpeg

Happiness comes in so many different forms that it can be hard to grasp. Unhappiness, on the other hand, is easy to identify; you know it when you see it, and you definitely know when it’s taken ahold of you.

And let’s face it, happiness and work do not always go hand in hand. A 2013 Gallup study, which reported data from more than 180 million people, found that just 13% of us consider ourselves to be “happily engaged at work.”

Those who do rate themselves as happy are 36% more motivated, six times more energized, and twice as productive as their unhappy counterparts.

Happiness actually has less to do with your circumstances than you might think. A University of Illinois study found that people who earn the most (more than $ 10 million annually) are only a smidge happier than the average Joes and Janes who work for them, and psychologists from the University of California found that genetics and life circumstances only account for about 50% of a person’s happiness. The rest is up to you.

Life circumstances have little to do with happiness because much happiness is under your control–the product of your habits and your outlook on life. Happiness is synthetic–you either create it, or you don’t.

When it comes to making yourself happy, you need to learn what works for you. Once you discover this, everything else tends to fall into place. And making yourself happy doesn’t just improve your performance; it’s also good for your health.

A critical skill set that happy people tend to have in common is emotional intelligence (EQ). At TalentSmart, we’ve tested the EQs of more than a million people and know what makes high EQ people tick. So, we went digging until we found some great ways that emotionally intelligent people create their own happiness.

1. They don’t obsess over things they can’t control. It’s good to know how the Brexit might affect your country’s markets or that your company could merge with its largest competitor, but there’s a big difference between understanding these larger forces and worrying about them. Happy people are ready and informed, but they don’t allow themselves to fret over things that are beyond their control.

2. They choose their battles wisely.
Emotionally intelligent people know how important it is to live to fight another day. In conflict, unchecked emotion makes you dig your heels in and fight the kind of battle that can leave you severely damaged and unhappy for some time to come. When you read and respond to your emotions, you’re able to choose your battles wisely and only stand your ground when the time is right.

3. They get enough sleep. I’ve beaten this one to death over the years and can’t say enough about the importance of sleep to improving your mood, focus, and self-control. When you sleep, your brain literally recharges, removing toxic proteins that accumulate during the day as byproducts of normal neuronal activity. This ensures that you wake up alert and clear-headed. Your energy, attention, and memory are all reduced when you don’t get enough quality sleep. Sleep deprivation also raises stress hormone levels on its own, even without a stressor present. Happy people make sleep a priority, because it makes them feel great and they know how lousy they feel when they’re sleep deprived.

4. They heed their moral compass. Crossing moral boundaries in the name of success is a sure-fire path to unhappiness. Violating your personal standards creates feelings of regret, dissatisfaction, and demotivation. Know when to stand your ground and express dissent when someone wants you to do something that you know you shouldn’t. When you’re feeling confused, take some time to review your values and write them down. This will help you to locate your moral compass.

5. They exercise during the week.
Getting your body moving for as little as 10 minutes releases GABA, a soothing neurotransmitter that also limits impulsivity. A University of Bristol study showed that people who exercised on workdays reported improvements in time management, mood, and performance. The benefits of exercise always outweigh the time lost in its pursuit.

6. They have a growth mindset.
People’s core attitudes fall into one of two categories: a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. With a fixed mindset, you believe you are who you are and you cannot change. This creates problems when you’re challenged, because anything that appears to be more than you can handle is bound to make you feel hopeless and overwhelmed. People with a growth mindset believe that they can improve with effort. This makes them happier because they are better at handling difficulties. They also outperform those with a fixed mindset because they embrace challenges, treating them as opportunities to learn something new.

7. They clear the clutter.
I don’t need to remind you of how much time you spend at work. Take a good look at your workspace. You should create a space that’s soothing and uplifting. Whether it’s a picture of your family, a plant, or an award that you’re proud of, display them prominently to keep them on your mind. Get rid of the junk and clutter that hold no significance and do nothing positive for your mental state.

8. They lend a hand.
Taking the time to help your colleagues not only makes them happy, but it also makes you happy. Helping other people gives you a surge of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, all of which create good feelings. In a Harvard study, employees who helped others were 10 times more likely to be focused at work and 40% more likely to get a promotion. The same study showed that people who consistently provided social support were the most likely to be happy during times of high stress. As long as you make certain that you aren’t overcommitting yourself, helping others is sure to have a positive influence on your happiness.

9. They let their strengths flow.
A University of Chicago study of peak performance found that people who were able to reach an intense state of focus, called flow, reaped massive benefits. Flow is the state of mind in which you find yourself completely engrossed in a project or task, and you lose awareness of the passage of time and other external distractions. Flow is often described as an exhilarating state in which you feel euphoria and mastery simultaneously. The result is not just happiness and productivity but also the development of new skills through a heightened state of learning. The key to reaching flow lies in organizing your tasks such that you have immediate and clear goals to pursue that play to your strengths. As you begin working on these tasks, your focus increases along with your feelings of adequacy. In time, you reach a flow state, in which productivity and happiness flourish. Set clear goals each day and experiment with task order until you find the secret formula that gets you flowing.

10. They believe the best is yet to come.
Don’t just tell yourself that the best is yet to come–believe it. Having a positive, optimistic outlook on the future doesn’t just make you happier; it also improves your performance by increasing your sense of self-efficacy. The mind has a tendency to magnify past pleasure to such a great degree that the present pales in comparison. This phenomenon can make you lose faith in the power of the future to outdo what you’ve already experienced. Don’t be fooled. Believe in the great things the future has in store.

Bringing It All Together

Applying these strategies won’t just improve your happiness at work; most of them will also improve your emotional intelligence. Pick those that resonate with you and have fun with them.

What makes you happy? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Steve Martin, Carrie Fisher, and the Male Response to Female Beauty

In response to the news that Carrie Fisher had died, Steve Martin shared on Facebook the vivid memory of the impact Ms. Fisher had had on him nearly forty years before (presumably when he’d seen her portraying Princess Leia in the first Star Wars movie).

“When I was a young man, Carrie Fisher was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen,” Martin began.

As has been widely reported, Steve Martin’s tribute was publicly attacked by some as “sexist.” “Remember Carrie Fisher for her talent, her feminism, her commentary on mental health,” New York Magazine wrote, “– not for the way she looked.” A Twitter user’s comment captured the essence of these attacks: “”Seriously @SteveMartinToGo quit being such a jerk for thinking Carrie Fisher was beautiful and saying so on the occasion of her death.”

Although Steve Martin had his defenders, nonetheless, in the face of the attacks, he retreated and deleted his posting.

More needs to be said about how wrong-headed are those attacks.

Let me begin by acknowledging that women have much to complain about the manner in which men relate to them regarding their looks and their bodies. And they have much to complain about how men fail to relate to them– as full human beings worthy of respect. Particularly in the aftermath of an election to the presidency of a man we have heard boasting of sexually assaulting women, the injured feelings of women whose humanity has been denied and abused warrants acknowledgment and consideration.

So the following is not intended as a counter-attack on those women who, triggered perhaps by his rhapsodic comment about Carrie Fisher’s beauty, attacked Steve Martin. It is, rather, an attempt to clarify what there is in men’s response to womanly beauty that deserves to be honored, not condemned.

“Carrie Fisher was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen.” One can hear a fullness of heart in Steve Martin’s statement. He is recalling an experience of inspiration–a breathing in of spirit in response to something that touched him deeply, a pleasurable recollection of being moved by beauty.

I imagine most men can identify with that appreciation of womanly beauty. And it’s a good thing that we are that way. That response is deeply wired into our nature. It is a response that has for eons been life-serving, and life-enhancing.

The evolutionary process that has shaped us has seen to it that, by nature, we feel the feelings that help keep us alive and serve to pass our form of life forward into the future. It is good that the male human is moved, as Steve Martin was, by the perception of female beauty. That is no small part of how it has come to pass that there are people on this earth.

It has been well-established scientifically that what the human male finds beautiful in the human female is correlated with health, fertility, and advantageous genetic endowment. The perpetuation of life is vital business, and it is life-serving for us to appreciate what will help us continue our kind.

Appreciation of this sort connects with our fundamental being at a level way deeper than our liking someone’s “commentary on mental health.” That sort of thing can be real, but it is most unlikely to produce a memory that is still resonant forty years later.

Steve Martin was accused of responding to Carrie Fisher purely in physical terms. But I doubt that’s true at all. We humans do not just mate, we also form relationships as lovers. We are wired not just to produce offspring, but also to form families that can nurture our offspring through their prolonged period of dependency. Heart and soul are also involved, and when we see one another, we see more than just the purely physical.

Carrie Fisher was a woman of real spirit, and that quality of her being was entirely visible in her portrayal of the highly spirited character, Princess Leia. I would wager that when Steve Martin found Carrie Fisher beautiful, he was responding also to that spirit.

That was certainly the case the moment I first met my own beloved, April, more than thirty years ago. As she walked toward me on that afternoon in Rock Creek Park in Washington (on April 21, 1984), I saw her physical loveliness. (Not beauty-queen beautiful, but certainly pleasing to the eye even at that level.) But what captivated me immediately was a beauty that was both visible and at the level of the spirit.

Here’s how I put it two and a half years later, in the vow that I’d composed for our wedding. Describing her eyes as “like an open blue sky,” I said, “I saw in that first moment that your face is a clear window of your brave and beautiful soul.”

I continue to be moved by that beauty at moments that are, thankfully, not at all rare. Indeed, the moments that I’ve been most deeply moved by womanly beauty have been in recent years with April, who is now in her sixties. It is part of what I call “the sacred space of lovers.” And the experience of the heightening of my perception of such beauty illustrates the wisdom in the question asked by that old song: “Do I love you because you are beautiful? Or are you beautiful because I love you?”

The connections between the perception of beauty and the feeling of the open heart are complex. Steve Martin, I imagine, was not coming from any less-than-human “sexist” place in his perception of Carrie Fisher. I imagine that, back when he was a young man and he saw that beauty, had Steve Martin been given the opportunity to sit across the table from the young woman he had appreciated, he would have treated her as endearingly as he knew how to. If “sexism” implies some sort of lesser treatment, I doubt how he beheld Carrie Fisher would have been sexist in the least.

Men are supposed to appreciate women, and it all begins with first sight.

I am still moved also by the beauty I see in other women. Experiences of beauty – in general – are important to me. I am moved by the beauty of the music of Bach and Mozart. Moved, too, by the sight of the trees’ spring leaves emerging in the valley and ascending the slopes toward our house on the ridge. But nothing moves me more profoundly than womanly beauty, and the way movie stars are cast suggests that looking at such beauty is a pleasure that is pretty nigh universal.

I’m sure Steve Martin would affirm that his memory of seeing that “most beautiful creature” is a pleasurable one. Beholding womanly beauty is pleasurable for the men I know, and thus this response is life-enhancing as well as life-serving.

It does not diminish in the least that sacred space between April and me that I appreciate womanly beauty wherever I see it. As I see it, our being lovers is more than just a connection between her as a specific human woman and me as a specific human man. It is also a representation of that ancient reality of woman and man coming together in love, as lovers.

As Leonard Cohen put it in his song, “That’s No Way to Say Good-bye”:

Yes many loved before us
I know we are not new
In city and in forest
They smile like me and you

I love April not only for being her, but also for being the embodiment of Woman in my life. Did I not appreciate “woman,” I’d appreciate April the less.

That a man should respond to the beauty of woman is a sign of life’s flowering in him. Just as I would wish for every man to see in his beloved some substantial piece of the beauty that Steve Martin saw in Carrie Fisher, so would I wish for every man the capacity to see representatives of such beauty in the world around him.

The love of womanly beauty, and of the beautiful qualities that can be conveyed in that visible beauty, partakes of the sacred in the human realm.

Steve Martin’s recollection of Carrie Fisher’s beauty deserves to be celebrated, not silenced..

Andy Schmookler, who has spent the past dozen years warning about the destructive force that has been rising on the American right, will launch this spring a new series–not on the brokenness, but on a dimension of wholeness — with the title, “The Sacred Space of Lovers.”

Just Food

We suffer today from food anxiety, bombarded as we are with confusing messages about how to eat an ethical diet. Should we eat locally? Is organic really better for the environment? Can genetically modified foods be good for you? JUST FOOD does for fresh food what Fast Food Nation (Houghton Mifflin, 2001) did for fast food, challenging conventional views, and cutting through layers of myth and misinformation. For instance, an imported tomato is more energy-efficient than a local greenhouse-grown tomato. And farm-raised freshwater fish may soon be the most sustainable source of protein. Informative and surprising, JUST FOOD tells us how to decide what to eat, and how our choices can help save the planet and feed the world.

RBG Writes Personal Note To Girl Who Dressed Up As Her For Superhero Day

A few weeks ago, we met Michele, the 8-year-old girl who eschewed Marvel and DC to dress up as Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg for her school’s Superhero Day.

Now Michele has received a response from The Notorious RBG herself, and she couldn’t be happier.

Ginsburg’s assistant had reached out to the family shortly after their story went viral to let them know that RBG had seen the photo of Michele in her costume and to ask for their home address.

The note from Ginsburg, which arrived last night, read, “Dear Michele: You look just like me! May you continue to thrive on reading and learning. Every good wish, Ruth Bader Ginsburg.”

Michele’s mom, Krista Threefoot, told HuffPost that her daughter was “super duper excited!” to receive the note. “When I read it, I felt really happy because she said I looked just like her. It was really special because she wrote it by hand,” Michele told her mom.

Ginsburg also included a quote about the power of reading.

Excited to show her teacher, Michele took the letter to school with her Friday, where her math teacher took time out of class to read the letter and teach a lesson about the Supreme Court.

Michele may have even inspired a new trend ― now several of her classmates want to be “real” superheroes next year, including Bill Gates and Hillary Clinton.

Despite being a little overwhelmed by all the attention, Mom says, “I would really to thank Justice Ginsburg for being such an inspiration to all of us, and for being so committed to fighting for equality. This wouldn’t have gone where it has if she weren’t such an admirable person. I also want to thank her for taking the time to make a little girl really, really happy.”

The family plans to write a thank-you note to the justice this weekend.

3 Silicon Valley-Tested Tips For Introvert Networking

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

In the Silicon Valley, many senior leaders are introverted—in fact, many more than in most other industries we’ve studied in our research of over 200 C-Suite Executives. There are some great lessons that we can learn about introverts from the Valley.

Rajeev Behera has worked in the Silicon Valley for the past seven years, running marketing teams in various start-ups. He now heads up Reflektive, a communication platform that enables employees to send and receive continual, real-time feedback. He provided me with three key tips for introverts to shine bright next to their louder, extroverted peers.

Focus on manager one-on-ones

One of the most important goals introverted employees need to keep in mind is to be intentional about having one-on-ones with their managers. Extroverts, as natural talkers, are comfortable discussing what they’re working on, what their goals are, and what progress they’ve made. Because they speak so freely, openly, and with such ease, peers and managers often hear of their progress and productivity at work. Extroverts’ more expressive nature can make silent introverts appear less productive.

What Behera suggests, then, is to play to one of the strengths of introverts—that of having deeper, more detailed conversations. People with quieter presences should intentionally converse daily with their managers, even for five minutes, to update them. Because introverts are not always talking, it’s important for them to set aside time to consciously inform and update their supervisors on their progress. This not only enables introverts to properly share their insights but also forms strong relationships. For introverts, it’s often easier to speak up one-on-one than in front of peers, so this tactic also gives them the opportunity to gain visibility in the eyes of their managers.

Behera put it well: “That’s probably the biggest key: letting them know how insightful you are and being very clear about what you’re doing in those one-on-ones, and making sure you develop that one-on-one relationship with your manager—outside of group meetings and team meetings.”

Focus on quality, not quantity

The next point Behera makes is similar to a point often made in the discussion about introverts and networking. Networking can be perceived as daunting and uncomfortable for many introverts. Rather than work a room the same way an extrovert would (speaking to many people for little time), introverts often speak to fewer people but have longer, more detailed conversations. Those conversations easily go beyond the superficial and can lead to relationships that last several years after the event, long beyond the more typical duration of a mere follow-up e-mail.

Within a company, the same tactic can be used to foster deeper relationships among employees. Once you reach a certain level at an organization, you have a tight-knit set of peers and co-workers; still, it’s often beneficial to maintain relationships with employees within various sectors of an organization.

The same way introverts would speak to fewer people at a networking event but sustain a deeper conversation, they could establish good relationships with employees across the company. This enables introverts to be known—not superficially by everyone at the company, but in-depth by quite a few.

Focus on synthesis

A final point is that it’s always helpful to be a second ear to your boss. Behera noticed the manifestation of this stemming from the one-on-one relationships he had with some of his employees. These employees would go off to their meetings or work in peer groups, listen intently to conversations, synthesize the information they’d heard, and report back to him in a thoughtful manner.

The ability to synthesize a lot of information is a key skill of introverts. Instead of talking a lot in meetings, they listen closely and share important takeaways from the meetings with their managers later on. The level of insight this skill provides is a great quality of introverts—one they should capitalize on.

Though introverts are quiet, they can shine just as brightly as their extroverted peers. Establishing one-on-one conversations with a manager, fostering deeper relationships with fewer employees across the company, and synthesizing information are all gateways for introverts to spotlight their talents and productive efforts.

Introverts deserve to be heard, and being quiet should not get in the way of that.

These Gadgets Are Designed To Save Your Sleep

The rules about technology and sleep used to be so simple: Don’t mix them.

Research has shown (fairly conclusively) that blue light from smartphones and other screens stops our bodies from producing melatonin, a hormone that helps us fall asleep. Other studies suggest that reading on a screen before bedtime makes you drowsier the next day, and that spending too much time using your smartphone anytime throughout the day may be harmful to sleep.

But this year’s Consumer Electronics Show of more than 3,800 companies showcasing new products suggests the rules on sleep and tech are getting more complicated.

For the first time in the CES 50-year history, “sleep tech” is an exhibit category with dedicated space in the Las Vegas exhibition. The 2017 show’s agenda includes the panels, “Waking Up to the Sleep Tech Movement,” and, “Today’s High-Tech Nurseries.”

“It’s proven that sleep drastically impacts our overall health,” Allison Fried, director of global event technology for CES, told The Huffington Post.

True. Sleep deprivation comes with a list of short-term and long-term perils, from raising the chance of an accident and catching a cold to increasing the risk of obesity, heart disease and some cancers.

But how does technology go from being the sleep problem to the solution? Enter this year’s slate of sleep-tech gadgetry.

“From sleep trackers and silent alarms to bedroom lighting, white noise and even smart beds, sleep technologies are helping us take control of our nighttime routines and re-energizing our bodies,” Fried said.

Technology can help people sleep better by giving them more knowledge about their sleep habits, said Mick Farrell, CEO of ResMed, a medical device company that designs and manufactures products for patients with sleep apnea and other respiratory diseases.

“Unlike diet (where we know what we eat) and exercise (we know whether we did any), for sleep we have little ability to truly understand it,” Farrell told HuffPost. “That’s where technology comes in and can really change the game.”

ResMed is showcasing its new S+ non-contact sleep sensor at CES, which not only tracks your sleep, but also analyzes light, noise and temperature in your bedroom. Farrell is speaking on a sleep panel at the show about how technology is delivering real sleep solutions.

The key is having accurate information that can turn big data from sleep into actionable information so people can sleep better and live better
Mick Farrell, CEO of ResMed

“The key is having accurate information that can turn big data from sleep into actionable information so people can sleep better and live better,” Farrell said.

The products featured at this year’s technology showcase promise to do that ― and more.

Meet the alarm clock that wakes you with the scent of buttered croissants.

Need help relaxing? Try NuCalm. The four-step “system” includes dietary supplements and a topical cream to help your body counteract adrenaline, microcurrent stimulation patches to facilitate the body’s relaxation response, noise-dampening headphones with software that syncs your brain waves to the pace of the lightest stages of sleep, and a light-blocking eye mask so you don’t get visually distracted.

Curious whether you toss and turn in your sleep? The Emfit QS Sleep Tracker gets conveniently installed under your mattress and claims it tracks heart rate, breathing rate, movement and how long you spend in REM, light sleep and deep sleep. You can check the results on your smartphone, tablet or computer.

Sleep Number’s new 360 smart bed can pre-warm your side of the mattress before bedtime, slightly raises your side of the bed if you start to snore (before you disrupt your partner) and wakes you with its smart alarm during your lightest stage of sleep (within your desired wake-up window).

Other sleep-related gadgets on display include a smart light bulb that slowly filters out its blue light as bedtime approaches, a cooling pad that adjusts the temperature of your mattress, and an alarm clock that wakes you with the scent of your choice ― butter croissants, espresso or seaside (“a mix of sea spray, tiare flower and monoi”).

Products that can aid sleep aren’t confined to the sleep-tech category. Several sleep-related gadgets fall into other categories, such as “health and wellness” and “smart home/appliances.”

Helpful or overkill?

But does the tech really help you sleep better? Maybe, but not necessarily, Rebecca Spencer, associate professor of psychological and brain sciences at University of Massachusetts Amherst, told HuffPost.

“They are based on genuine science,” Spencer said. But people might do best to ask themselves if the products really improve their sleep, she added ― “Or can [they] do better within their own environment?”

Products that control temperature might help you if you’re too hot or too cold when you sleep, she said. “But why not better regulate your own room temperature using appropriate bedding?”

But why not better regulate your own room temperature using appropriate bedding?
Rebecca Spencer, associate professor of psychological and brain sciences at University of Massachusetts Amherst

Spencer has studied brain function during sleep and has collaborated on research that evaluated the accuracy of sleep trackers like Fitbit and Misfit. (The studies found that most personal wearables are generally accurate in tracking time spent asleep versus time spent in bed, but fail to detect the different sleep stages, Spencer said.)

Still, there’s an upside to the sleep-tech movement, Spencer said.

“It draws attention to the importance of sleep,” she explained ― even when the trackers aren’t 100-percent accurate. “The person has nonetheless thought about their sleep and the quality of it.”

It’s doubtful whether most people really need to buy a gadget to monitor their sleep stages, Spencer said. And if you think you have a clinical problem, a doctor should be involved for a diagnosis and treatment.

The bottom line: The sleep-tech movement may be upon us, but that doesn’t mean you need to join it to get your shuteye.
