These Super PAC Donors Were Able To Hide Their Identities Before The Election

WASHINGTON ― In the final days of the 2016 election, there was concern among Democrats that voters in Philadelphia wouldn’t be able to get to their polling locations due to a transit workers strike. A group of investors in Silicon Valley came up with an idea: Provide free or discounted rides through the ride-sharing taxi services Uber and Lyft. Funding came through a super PAC called My Ride to Vote. But at the time, no one knew who provided the money.

This is one of many cases in which super PACs spent money on the election in the final weeks of the election without having to disclose their donors until after the election. The cutoff for pre-election disclosure is Oct. 19. Those donations were revealed Thursday.

Those who took advantage of My Ride to Vote’s services were getting their Uber or Lyft rides subsidized by Google co-founder Sergey Brin. The billionaire donated $ 1 million to fund the ride-sharing super PAC.

Some of these late-stage donations went to super PACs whose purposes were already well-known.

Priorities USA Action, the main super PAC supporting Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign, raised a little more than $ 15 million in the final three weeks of the election. There were no surprises among the late donors, just more money from the same mega-donors who help make Priorities USA Action the most well-funded super PAC ever. The group did end the election with $ 2.1 million cash on hand. Perhaps some of this money could have been spent in Michigan or Wisconsin.

A coterie of pro-Donald Trump super PACs also reported their late contributions. Future45 raised the most, with $ 11.3 million in contributions raised in October and November. Casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson and his wife, Miriam, contributed the most with $ 10 million combined. The second biggest donor was World Wrestling Entertainment’s Linda McMahon, Trump’s pick to head the Small Business Administration, with a $ 1 million donation. McMahon had previously donated $ 6.2 million to pro-Trump super PACs.

Future45 also donated $ 100,000 to another anti-Clinton super PAC called Character Counts. The group had not reported any donations prior to Election Day. Another pro-Trump super PAC that had not reported any prior donations, RallyPAC, disclosed Thursday that it got $ 250,000 from banker Andy Beal.

Rebuilding America Now, another pro-Trump super PAC, raised less in its final days with just $ 2.1 million. The biggest donor was Los Angeles real estate developer Geoff Palmer, with a $ 1 million. Cerberus Capital Management head Stephen Feinberg, a major private equity investor, gave $ 975,000, while the private prison company GEO Group chipped in $ 125,000.

The final major pro-Trump super PAC, Make America Number 1, raised $ 1.1 million. It received $ 1 million from Trump’s biggest Silicon Valley ally, Peter Thiel, and $ 100,000 from the presidential campaign committee of Dr. Ben Carson. Carson has since been named to head the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and an associate of Thiel’s has been floated as a potential head of the Food and Drug Administration.

There were other late contributions to groups in down-ballot races, too. In the Nevada Senate race, the super PAC Silver State PAC received a late boost to help Rep. Joe Heck, the Republican candidate for Senate, in the form of a $ 100,000 contribution from billionaire hedge fund investor Robert Mercer. Heck, however, lost the race.

Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) won his Senate race against Democrat Deborah Ross and was aided by late spending from the super PAC Grow NC Strong. The group had raised only about $ 400,000 before Oct. 20 but received a $ 1 million boost from the Reynolds American tobacco company in the final weeks to help Burr.

A similar situation played out in Missouri, where Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) won election with support from Heartland Resurgence, a super PAC run by his former chief of staff-turned-lobbyist Gregg Hartley. The group had not raised much before the final weeks of the campaign, but then it received over $ 1 million for the last stretch, including checks of $ 250,000 each from Missouri-based donors David Humphreys and Sam Fox.

The National Horizon super PAC reported no donations before Oct. 20. This meant that no one knew who was behind the attacks it ran against Pennsylvania Democratic Senate candidate Katie McGinty and New York Democratic House candidate Zephyr Teachout in the last days of the campaign. A disclosure filed Thursday reveals that Ronald Lauder, an heir to the Estee Lauder cosmetics fortune, donated $ 700,000 and the conservative Club for Growth, a nonprofit that does not disclose its donors, gave $ 500,000.

In Louisiana, a super PAC called Prosperity With Accountability ran ads promoting Democratic Senate candidate Carolyn Fayard. The group ran ads that compared Fayard to barrier-breaking Rep. Shirley Chisholm (D-N.Y.) and attempting to tie the other Democrat in the race, Foster Campbell, to noted racist and Trump supporter David Duke. The ads did not work. Campbell finished in the top two on Election Day, which in Louisiana means he moved on to a runoff that will be held Saturday.

As for who was behind Prosperity With Accountability’s attempt to boost Fayard. It was her mom, Cynthia Fayard.

What I Wish I Had Known In My Twenties

One time when I was twenty-five, I went shopping for an engagement ring for my girlfriend. We had been together for three years, and my dad kept asking when I would marry her. My friends kept asking. Her friends kept asking. Her dad kept asking her and she would tell me.

We were living together. And I liked her. Maybe I loved her.

But I started to shiver when I was looking at rings in the store. My friend who I was with took one look at me and quoted a lyric from an MC 900 Ft Jesus song: “Something’s gonna happen, and it’s probably not good.”

So I didn’t buy the ring. We didn’t get married. She moved out. We moved to different cities. I called her once a few years later, but now she’s not even on Facebook, and we haven’t talked since.

That sums up the twenties – everything you think is important and meaningful has absolutely no bearing on your future life.

I loved her. I had a job. I was writing novels. I had friends. I was a computer programmer.

Now, none of the above is true. (Oh, I have friends. Just different friends – 100% different).

And everything in my thirties – nothing is true anymore (except I have two kids still. Although now they are not babies. Now they are smarter than me).

I’m forty-eight now.

My most recent career change occurred when I was forty-seven. Before that, I started writing seriously (I wrote five very unserious books in my thirties) when I was forty-two.

In my twenties and thirties, my average weight was about 155 – 170. Now it’s 140. I write every day. I don’t obsess about money all day long. And I make bad decisions all day long – just like I did in my twenties.

The main skill I got between my twenties and now is that I bounce back from bad things faster.

I was very successful in my late twenties. And then a total failure after. Then very successful. And so on.

So that didn’t change. Only my ability to bounce back from really bad things. Horrible things. Things you wouldn’t want to wish on anyone, and yet they happen, in some form or other, to everyone.

So the only thing I can with full integrity say I wish I had known: nothing at all matters. Oh, and since nothing matters, once you realize that, you’ll start to bounce back faster.

And since nothing matters, you might as well be kind to people as much as possible. We can all laugh at the same joke at the end of this very long day.

End The Ban On Marijuana In Sports

In the last week we’ve heard from NBA legend Phil Jackson and Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr talking about their own marijuana use and how they think professional sports leagues like the NBA and NFL should change their marijuana policies.

Marijuana should not be a banned substance in professional sports.

Marijuana is legal for medical use in 28 states and recreational use in 8 states plus Washington D.C., yet it is a banned substance in most professional sports and athletes are not allowed to use it. It is time for the sports world to catch up with the times and adopt more rational marijuana policies.

The National Football League (NFL) is the clearest example of a backwards marijuana policy. The NFL ignores the medicinal benefits of marijuana, most notably its ability to treat chronic pain, and that comes with the territory of being a professional football player.

Instead, prescription opioid painkillers are the preferred treatment method. Former Pro-Bowler Calvin Johnson spent nine years on the Detroit Lions and said painkillers were handed out “like candy.” Retired players like Jim McMahon and others have talked about developing an addiction to those medications. NBA All-Star Blake Griffin supports medical marijuana specifically because “many guys would probably benefit from it and not take as many painkillers, which have worse long-term effects.”

If people are suffering from chronic pain, using marijuana with painkillers can help reduce the amount of painkillers needed, and in some cases people have been able to completely replace their use of painkillers with marijuana. Overdose is an issue being discussed across the country right now and a 2014 study showed that opiate overdoses decreased by a nearly 25 percent average in states that have implemented medical marijuana laws compared to states that have not.

The NFL is also dealing with a concussion crisis — many players are retiring early and some people are choosing not to play football at all because of the consequences that can come later in life after having too many head injuries. The non-psychoactive part of marijuana known as CBD has the potential to treatand even prevent concussions. The NFL should set an example by investing in marijuana research to see how it can help improve the health of its players.

Former Super Bowl champions Marvin Washington, Scott Fujita and Brendon Ayanbadejo helped start a conversation two years ago calling on the NFL to incorporate medical marijuana in their strategy for treating and preventing concussions. Eugene Monroe continued the debate earlier this year when he became the first current player to call on the NFL to look at the benefits of medical marijuana. He has since been joined by Derrick Morgan.

Last month Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson was suspended for 10 games because he uses marijuana to treat Crohn’s disease, which is a qualifying condition under New York’s medical marijuana program. Athletes should not be treated differently when it comes to marijuana — they should be able to use it in places where it is legal.

Earlier this year, NBA veteran Al Harrington came out in strong support of California’s Prop. 64 to legalize marijuana — not only because he thinks it should be legal, but because he sees marijuana legalization and drug policy reform as a racial equity issue. He said, “I’ve been in the marijuana-industry space for the last five years, and I’ve seen that it’s a predominately white space. And minorities, we’re the ones that are locked up behind it.”

Attitudes about marijuana are changing rapidly; 60 percent of Americans are in favor of legalizing it. Athletes and sports leagues in general have a large influence on our culture, and if these leagues change their marijuana policies they can make a big impact to help change the way people think about marijuana (and the people who use it).

It’s time for all professional sports leagues to do the socially responsible thing: stop using the playbook and rhetoric from the failed drug war and create more fair marijuana policies.

The “secret” Facebook group that grew into a vibrant community for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s biggest fans started as a way to get supporters to wear Clinton’s choice uniform on Election Day. “So far the response has been overwhelming positive,” Harris told The Huffington Post by email. “People have commented that it’s a meaningful way to contribute in the spirit of Hillary’s campaign. Many others have referred to it as ‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantsuit,’ which I love. Although I’m still dismayed by the election result, I’m heartened to see such an outpouring of good will, generosity and a desire to stay engaged.”

Chase Your Dream, Not Your Dragon

I’d like to say I had an ordinary week of meetings with clients, a hot date, and regular news purge. But as things go, I had the unusual task of working with a new client whose dream is to run for Congress.

Jenn is a humble patriot looking to make a difference. She’s a grassroots supporter with little experience. Her passion for contributing was spent as a volunteer, knocking on doors, and handing out campaign jargon in this year’s election.

And because she is a dedicated and loving being, Jenn wants to heal the toxic political climate.

But after last month, she was left disheartened, with post-election blues.

“We’ll never give up,” we say to ourselves. And the years go by, and we sit idly watching our dreams as they fade.

We are all unique. There is nobody like you on the planet, and with the right development, we can attract the support of others who will welcome our dream, too.

With growth, there will always be an opportunity to attain the thing you want, no matter how it shows itself. To imagine a life without a dream, even the tiniest one, is submitting to a world of mediocrity.

Jenn is principled, articulate and passionate – but running for Congress is a steep climb.

According to Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers and the ten-thousand-hour rule of “deliberate practice,” which asserts that to become a world-class expert in any field, a person must practice their skill or trade for ten thousand hours. The Beatles did it in Hamburg and Steve Jobs in a high school computer lab. Gladwell believed that by reaching 10,000 hours (that’s about 90 minutes per day for 20 years) of practice you can become an outlier – the “Tipping-Point” of greatness.

Today, we have new rules. We believe that if we think about one thing long enough it will hardwire into us. Our new cracked system of facts makes it possible for anyone to claim anything as reality in a post-truth era. But Gladwell’s ten-thousand-hour rule offers a greater prospect of deciphering the faux from the real deal.

Let’s be honest, for most folk winning a congressional race is near on impossible. The odds are stacked high. To succeed, Jenn would need media coverage, infrastructure and money. It takes years to build all three components, and Jenn has none. Although principled, articulate and passionate, her feelings of self-worth are now at ground zero.

Running for Congress is Jenn’s go-to story, how she defines her world. But, in truth, she has no resources or support. She has moderate experience and no plans. “If you can’t link the dots,” I told her, “Your approach will always let you down.”

She felt like she had failed. But in hindsight, she hadn’t failed at all; she was just beginning.

I had spent a good 30 minutes listening to Jenn. She must have mentioned grassroots at least seven times. There is always a clue if you listen to a person long enough. I let her know that.

My thought was to open more of a dialogue about her interest in grassroots work.

Her eyes lit up as she rambled excitingly about working as an activist. A grassroots activist. Her inspiration was back. She felt energized.

Did she want to work for an organization to help women, or apply for a grassroots internship? “Oh,” she said, “So many thoughts, so many decisions – I can’t wait to make them all.”

She smiled, and with that I knew she was well on her way towards her heart dream. And who knows, she may become a congressional winner after all.

Just really, believe in what you’re trying to do. Don’t let people alter that. Let people advise you and lead you down paths to make smart business decisions. But trust your instinct and trust that overwhelming drive that made you put all your dreams and everything on the line. –Luke Bryan

Donald Trump Vows To Reduce Drug Prices, Doesn’t Say How

NEW YORK – President-elect Donald Trump took aim at drugmakers on Wednesday by promising in a magazine interview that “I’m going to bring down drug prices,” sending shares of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies lower.

In a cover story for Time magazine, which named him its Person of the Year, Trump said: “I don’t like what has happened with drug prices.”

The Republican U.S. president-elect, a wealthy real estate developer who ran a campaign with a populist appeal, did not state in the interview how he would reduce the cost of prescription drugs. Trump previously has suggested he was open to allowing importation of cheaper medicines from overseas.

Trump previously had taken aim at other industries, suggesting an interventionist stance toward business during his presidency.

Allergan Inc Chief Executive Brent Saunders last week cautioned drug companies against a false sense of security under Trump. [L1N1DW1Z9]

“If our industry can self-regulate on pricing, we can all focus on investing in innovative medicines and cures and move the pricing discussion to the back burner,” Saunders said via e-mail on Wednesday.

Trump’s Nov. 8 election victory was initially a boon for drug and biotech stocks, as investors relaxed knowing Democrat Hillary Clinton, who had been critical of rising drug prices, had not won the White House.

The Nasdaq Biotech Index rose as much as 12 percent in the two days after the election.

During the past few weeks, however, pharmaceutical stocks had given up the majority of those gains. The biotech index on Wednesday fell more than 3 percent to its lowest level since before the election. The NYSE Arca Pharmaceutical index of U.S. and European drugmakers was down 1 percent on Wednesday.

Chris Raymond, biotech analyst for Raymond James, said investors were unsure of how seriously to take Trump’s latest comments. “Nobody that I have talked to who is an institutional investor has said that they are selling based on this,” he said.

Continually rising drug prices have placed a heavy burden on consumers, many of whom cannot afford their medicines or face increasing co-pays on prescription drugs. Trump has vowed to repeal and replace President Barack Obama’s signature 2010 healthcare reform law, but that pledge does not address drug prices.

PhRMA, the largest pharmaceutical industry trade group, in an e-mailed statement said government mandates and interventions are not the solution for patients when it comes to medicine costs.

“If the drug companies think that they’re going to continue to have free rein to set and raise drug prices because of Trump, I think they’re deluding themselves,” said Erik Gordon, professor at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. “Nobody who voted for him is in favor of high drug prices.”

CARS, PLANES, THEN PHARMA

The pharmaceutical industry is the latest targeted by Trump. On Tuesday he took aim at a leading aerospace company, urging the government to cancel an order with Boeing Co for a revamped version of the presidential plane due to its extremely high cost.

He previously targeted the auto industry, vowing to block Ford Motor Co from opening a new plant in Mexico and threatening to impose tariffs on cars shipped back across the border.

The heads of those companies have sought direct discussions with Trump.

Jeff Jonas, a portfolio manager with Gabelli Funds, said Trump has brought the idea of drug pricing reform back to life, but added, “I’m still skeptical that anything actually passes through Congress, but the overhang is clearly going to continue.”

Len Yaffe, who manages StocDoc Partners healthcare fund, said that “companies that succeed in bringing transformative medicines to the market will continue to command a premium price.”

Winter Storm Brings Disorder To Standing Rock Celebration

FORT YATES, North Dakota — A blizzard and freezing temperatures created disorder this week for protesters intent on celebrating their partial victory over the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota.

Many roads were closed due to dangerous driving conditions and some protesters were stranded along streets in cars. Volunteers searched tents, teepees and makeshift lodgings in the main resistance camp to make sure no one was snowbound.

“The weather conditions are real. You could die,” said John Shirley, a veteran from Anchorage, Alaska, who’s been at the protests for a week. “The wind is the big thing. It feels like there are needles going through you.”

Months of uncertainty turned to joy on Sunday at the main protesters’ encampment when the Department of the Army announced it would not issue a permit to complete construction of the pipeline under Lake Oahe while it undertakes a time-consuming environmental study. 

But a winter storm of heavy snowfall and strong winds nearly brought the area to a standstill beginning Monday. Bitter winds persisted through Tuesday night though the snow had stopped. The high temperature Tuesday was reported to be in the single digits. 

Karen Little Wounded, who’s lived at the camp on federal land since August, awoke Tuesday morning to find a wall of snow several feet deep against her tent. She used a bowl to dig out.

“That was scary for me. I mean, I was by myself,” she said. She hitched a ride to Prairie Knights Casino and Resort, where she reunited with her boyfriend, who’d left camp earlier. 

The volunteers had turned the casino hotel into an impromptu shelter for members of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and their allies who’d been living at Oceti Sakowin camp, some of them for months.

The medical workers said that they’d treated more than 100 patients for dehydration, hypothermia and other conditions. Medics needed supplies to treat roughly 100 other patients with chronic diseases like diabetes and high-blood pressure, according to Rupa Marya, a doctor coordinating medical care.

Despite the inclement conditions, the festive atmosphere hasn’t been completely subdued. Native American protesters, who prefer to call themselves water protectors, led a celebratory powwow lasting hours during the blizzard.

Some protesters have vowed to stay even though the prospect of the pipeline going forward has been delayed by the Army’s decision. The chairman of the Native American tribe leading the opposition urged protesters to depart from the camp when the storm lifts. 

“We deeply appreciate all the people who supported us with their presence, but when this storm passes, it is time to dismantle the camp and return to our homes. If the camp stays where it is currently located, people are risking their lives,” tribal chairman Dave Archambault II said in a statement. “Once one person is hurt or property is destroyed, that will lead to more outsized actions by law enforcement. The longer the camp stays, the greater risk we run of seeing further violence at the hands of law enforcement and potential injury to our supporters.”

State and local officials plowed roads leading to the camp, set up shelters and brought buses for potential emergencies, according to the Morton County Sheriff’s Department. So far protest leaders have turned down offers to help, according to a sheriff’s department statement. 

As part of their opposition to the 1,172-mile pipeline, the Standing Rock Sioux had sought a thorough environmental impact statement, because they feared leaks from the pipeline could contaminate the water source of their nearby reservation. The tribe had also contended that the project would disturb sacred ground and violate a treaty with the federal government. 

The Army will now begin a review that will also explore rerouting the pipeline, though developer Energy Transfer Partners has said it’s opposed to the idea.

Do You Need a Coach or Therapist?

Coaches and therapists often overlap in what they offer clients. Understanding how they differ and articulating what you need can help you decide if coaching or therapy is better for you.

There are times in life when you need something more than the support of friends and family. Perhaps you want help to break a habit or meet a goal. Or maybe you want to examine and resolve deeply personal issues with someone who will listen to you without judgment.

Whatever your motivation, it can help to talk to a professional. A UCLA study showed that when you verbalize your feelings, it makes them less intense. But who should you talk to? Would a life coach or a therapist be more appropriate?

Coaches are useful for people looking to reach a specific goal or break a habit, often in a particular area, like health or career. Therapists generally address long-term emotional issues or problems, like trauma, addiction, anxiety, and depression. But these are generalities, and often a therapist may act as a coach and a coach may offer therapeutic support. The best thing you can do is get clear on your needs and goals and then do the research to find the right coach or therapist for you.

Do You Need to Climb Out of a Hole or Climb a Mountain?
The Differences Between Therapy & Coaching

In the book Coaching for Transformation, coaching is defined as “a partnership that maximizes human potential.” Coaches focus on “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential,” according to the International Coach Federation (ICF), the oldest and largest professional coaching organization. This description also fits for most therapists, too.

The American Psychological Association defines a therapist as someone who “provides a supportive environment that allows you to talk openly with someone who is objective, neutral, and nonjudgmental.” Which is also true of most coaches.

Richard Michaels, a Gestalt therapist and a life and executive coach, says that while both modalities “work to increase awareness: self-awareness, self-understanding, and emotional awareness…. The role of the client is more active [in coaching]. In therapy, you have more interpretation of what’s going on and more focus on your family of origin.” He describes many of his clients as high-functioning individuals who are ready to go deeper in some part of their life.

Madhu Maron, a human resources professional who now works as a life coach, says, “The [coaching] client is really longing for a change–[they have] a persistent deep, important longing,” she says. “It’s something like, I want to be healthier, get a new job, or have a better relationship. They can be very effective in certain parts of their lives, but not effective in this one area.”

Therapist and life coach Lisa Marie Bobby explains the difference this way: if you are dealing with depression, anxiety, addiction, trauma, emotional issues, or other problems that leave you feeling trapped in a hole, a therapist is probably the best person to help you climb out of it. Once you’re out of the hole and on level ground, a coach can help you climb whatever mountain you wish to climb, usually in an effort to improve your circumstances or have greater success in areas like career, relationships, or health.

Vetting a Coach or Therapist
Do Your Homework & Get Surprisingly Fast Results

Once you’ve identified if you need help getting out of the hole or are ready to climb a mountain, you’ll probably want to do some research and interview potential therapists and coaches to find someone who offers what you need. There are a wide range of therapies and coaching practices–being an informed client and asking questions up front to find the best match will save you a lot of time and money.

There are hundreds of styles of therapy, so if you don’t have the time or inclination to explore the options, you might begin with an online directory to find therapists near you or ask friends for recommendations.

Therapists refer to themselves in many different ways. To be a psychologist, psychoanalyst, psychiatrist, or social worker requires an advanced degree, and these titles are regulated. If someone is calling themselves by one of these titles, you know they have received at least a master’s degree and passed licensing requirements.

The titles “therapist,” “counselor,” and “psychotherapist” are not regulated and don’t require a license. This doesn’t mean all therapists are unlicensed; many of them are. It just means anyone can call themselves a therapist, so you may need to investigate someone’s credentials if they’re billing themselves as one.

Life coaches are not required to have any training. Many coaches complete training programs, and groups like the International Coaching Federation are working to standardize credentials in the field, but currently anyone can call themselves a coach.

To find a coach, begin with an online search for coaches who focus on the area you want to address. Ask friends and colleagues for recommendations. Most coaches (and many therapists) work remotely with clients via phone or Skype, so location is not necessarily an issue.

Whether you decide on therapy or coaching, results often come relatively quickly. One study found that most people feel better with about 10 therapy sessions, while another said that 88 percent of therapy participants reported improvements after one visit. So while it may take you some time to find the right coach or therapist, once you do you’re likely to notice changes fast.

Sorry, Weed Probably Won’t Help You Sleep

If you thought weed was helping you chill out, you might want to listen up. New research suggests it might actually have the opposite effect on your sleep. 

A new study found that people who reported being regular marijuana users were nearly twice as likely to report having sleep problems as people who only occasionally light up or don’t smoke at all.

Research on the relationship between sleep and marijuana is still pretty scarce ― and this one, small pilot study is not necessarily conclusive evidence, study author Deirdre Conroy, associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Michigan, told The Huffington Post.

But, she added: “Daily use of marijuana [was linked to] the most sleep disturbances.”

For the study, researchers surveyed 98 people who identified themselves as either daily marijuana users, occasional marijuana users who smoked at least once in the past month and up to five days per week, or those who never used the drug.

Nearly 40 percent of the daily pot users reported having insomnia symptoms ― compared with 10 percent of occasional users and 20 percent of non-users.

Previous studies have shown that any history of marijuana use was linked to an increased likelihood of people reporting either having trouble falling asleep, having trouble staying asleep, having trouble getting restorative sleep or feeling daytime sleepiness. But most of those studies were conducted in specific populations of people who were heavy marijuana users or people seeking treatment for substance abuse, Conroy said.

The new study is unique in that it compared sleep among individuals from the general public with different marijuana habits ― those who use the drug daily versus those who use the drug occasionally versus those who don’t use the drug at all, she explained. “This study looks at sleep while people are using and in their own environment,” she said.

But the relationship between pot and sleep is still emerging…

The data from this study makes a pretty strong suggestion that daily marijuana users had more sleep problems than occasional users or people who don’t smoke marijuana at all. But a few theories from the researchers might explain why some daily users have a higher likelihood of reporting sleep trouble than others:

1. Daily Pot Smokers Are More Likely To Have Anxiety Or Depression, Which Hurts Sleep

When the researchers excluded data from individuals in the study who reported having anxiety or depression, there were few differences between the sleep of daily pot users, occasional pot users and non-users.

“Marijuana may have different effects on your sleep depending on if you have [symptoms of] depression or anxiety,” Conroy said.

People who have anxiety ― which inherently puts them at a higher risk of sleep trouble ― may be self-medicating with marijuana. And if that’s the case, the group of regular marijuana users might include more people who are therefore already at a higher risk of having sleep problems, the authors note in the study. 

That makes sense because previous studies have shown there is also a link between higher marijuana use and higher rates of anxiety

2. Marijuana Could Be Contributing To Anxiety ― Which Then Hurts Sleep

Some research also suggests that marijuana use might contribute to an individual’s risk of anxiety or depression. So, it is possible that more frequent marijuana use is partially to blame for mood disorders, which then cause sleep problems, according to the study’s authors.

But the evidence that marijuana causes mood disorders is also far from conclusive.

That means this explanation is still just a theory at this point, Conroy said. But it does suggest that future studies about how pot affects sleep should carefully account for the role that mood disorders play, she added.

3. Poor Sleep May Lead Smokers To Smoke More

Because this study reports survey answers, the research does not necessarily explain whether smoking marijuana contributes to poor sleep or poor sleep causes people to smoke more, Conroy added.

Previous studies have found that marijuana use does affect the various stages of sleep ― reducing rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and increasing the deepest stages of sleep. Other research, though, has suggested prolonged, regular marijuana use suppresses deep sleep. But there is not really enough evidence to confirm a clear consensus about how sleep specifically affects the brain during sleep, Conroy said. “Unfortunately, there still are only a few studies,” she said. 

The bottom line is that marijuana use does affect your brain and your sleep, Conroy said. And if you have a daily pot habit, this new study suggests lighting up could be hurting your shut-eye.

LeBron James Won’t Stay At Trump Hotel During Cavaliers’ NYC Trip

The Cleveland Cavaliers will be in New York playing the Knicks this week, but some players, including LeBron James, have decided against staying at the team’s scheduled accommodations: the Trump SoHo.

The accommodations were arranged before the 2016 presidential election. President-elect Donald Trump does not hold equity in the property, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, but like many Trump-branded properties, the president-elect holds a licensing agreement with the hotel. 

Cavaliers General Manager David Griffin told the Cleveland Plain Dealer the defending champions were given the option to stay elsewhere. “Griffin said upwards of half the team ― the Cavs travel with 14 players ― may not stay there,” the Plain Dealer reported.

The team has made plans for a “group that wants to be elsewhere to be together elsewhere,” Griffin told The Associated Press

Earlier this month, three NBA teams ― the Milwaukee Bucks, Memphis Grizzlies and Dallas Mavericks ― announced they would stop staying at Trump-branded hotels “to avoid any implied association” with the president-elect. While the Cavaliers were not one of those teams, James was a vocal supporter of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, endorsing the nominee one month before the election.

“If basketball has taught me anything, it’s that no one achieves greatness alone. And it takes everyone working together to create real change,” James wrote in his endorsement.

James also campaigned with Clinton in Cleveland just days before the general election.

James posted an impassioned message following Trump’s election, reminding followers that the country will be “alright” and that children can still “change the world.”

Whom To Listen To and When

In April of (2008), I spent two weeks in India following a meditation guru from town to town.

This was my fourth visit to India, but I consider it my first real one. The other three were too touristy. Two were lecture tours, and I stayed in the best hotels, with warm water and the most excellent services money can buy. The third was for a Maha Kumba Mella, which is a gathering of Hindus on the Ganges River every 144 years. Sidhus descend from their caves in the Himalayas, and while it was an interesting experience to see them, it was not day-to-day India.

This time it was different. I slept in an ashram, was driven from town to town in terrible traffic, ate with Indians on the floor, and meditated with them. At my age (71), it was not an easy experience, but the guru was older (80-something) and he held on well, so who am I to complain?

What did I learn?

The meditation I was practicing is called sahaj marg, which means “the natural way.” The practice is to focus on the heart. No mantra, no focusing on the breath or on a candle or whatever, just listen to the heart by slowing down the mind.

I joined this type of practice because I believed I needed it. First, being Jewish, I spend most of my time in my head, and it needed some rest. Second, because I saw my dearest relatives and friends sent to their deaths during World War II, my heart has been closed all these years and it needed opening.
What does it mean to “listen to the heart?” How do you know, when you meditate, which thoughts are of the mind and which of the heart? Thoughts are thoughts, right?

No. There is a difference. You can argue with thoughts of the mind. You might toss and turn, and debate with yourself. But when your heart speaks, there is no argument. There is no discussion. There is no “Why?” or “Why not?” You are complete. You are at peace with yourself. The answer to the question “Why?” is “Because,” and that’s it.

That brought me to the next insight: If you really listen to your heart when you make a decision and your heart does not give you the answer, it means that you are not ready to finalize your decision. This is a case where it is better not to make a decision at that point in time.

That brought me to an interesting conclusion: When you decide with your heart, you cannot make a mistake.

Why?

Well, what is a mistake? It is always a conclusion you come to after the fact, right? It is a feeling of remorse and a judgment that you should have decided differently. It leads to self-accusations: that perhaps you did not deliberate enough, that you did not listen to advice, that you ignored facts, etc. All this is in your head.

When you make a decision with your heart, you are at peace with yourself. If, after the fact, you discover that your decision did not work out as you expected, you can not feel remorse because at the time you made the decision you had no doubts as to what to do, therefore you could not have done better. The fact that it did not work out is now only of academic interest. You can analyze what can be learned from what happened, but there is no place for remorse. You were at peace when you decided, and that was it.

Coming to this peace of mind when you decide with your heart is not a logical conclusion that you have reached after endless debates, internally or with others. It is beyond logic. It gives you a sense of completion, of integration, that almost defies logic. That is how you should feel when you decide to get married. That decision should be made with all your heart, not as a result of analyzing the cost-value relationship or an optimization model. When you make a decision with all your heart, as is the usual expression, you have the feeling of being integrated with your decision totally, wholly–maybe even holy. Mind, body, emotions, and spirit all feel at peace, united.

How does one come to such peace–usually we say “peace of mind,” though it would be more accurate to say “peace of the total body ” which is really peace of the heart–especially if there is a difficult decision to be made? You can do it by meditating. When you meditate you do not get attached to thoughts. Thus, you do not get into endless arguments with yourself. Instead, the decision eventually and automatically emerges as an insight.

If that description leaves you wondering how this insight can happen, let me share with you a story told to me by my one of my colleagues at UCLA, Professor Will McWhinney, that demonstrates this point. When McWhinney was a student at Yale, the fraternities held a contest for best choir. McWhinney’s fraternity had the worst voices at the university, except for one person whose voice was a pure, evangelical tenor. So they devised the following performance: The whole choir got on stage and began to sing where each person sang a different melody, which produced total cacophony. Then, slowly, one by one, each member of the choir stopped singing, except for the tenor, whose voice became stronger and stronger until it was alone, pure and crystal clear and totally enchanting. They won first prize.

This story is analogous to what happens in meditation. You have many voices in your head competing with each other. The more difficult the decision is, the more voices you hear, which can overwhelm you. When you meditate, the voices calm down one by one, while your heart’s voice grows stronger and stronger, until you simply “hear” the answer to your question and feel at peace with your decision.
But not only the head and heart think. We often say, “I have a gut feeling,” as if the gut is doing some decision processing.

That fact brought me to think in (PAEI) terms. The (A) processing is in the head. The (I) is processed by the heart. Where is (P) then? Sunil my associate suggested that if we follow the chakras, it is below the belly button, where our sexual organs are. Their role is survival of the species. That is where we feel instinctively. That is where the fight-or-flight reaction is processed: When we get scared we tighten the rectum, and the pelvic floor muscles.

Some people think with only one part of their body. Those who only react to their instincts are the (P)s: Act first, think later (if at all). Some do not listen to their instincts and use only their brain: These are the (A)s. Some people are only (E)s: all ideas and exciting priorities without considering what the repercussions of these ideas could be. And some people are all heart: They let their feelings for fellow humans or animals or whatever be the exclusive factor that determines their decision. These are the (I)s.

When a person processes information with all his faculties, the first one to respond to a new situation is the (P): His instincts of self preservation urge him to do something. Then the left mind, (A), gets activated: “Let’s think about it.” Next the right side of the brain gets involved, the (E), bringing new ideas to the table, while all along the heart, (I) is crying out, “Hey, listen to me too.”

To put it another way, instinctively you have the urge to do one thing, (P), but you think, (A), that it might not be prudent to do it, so new ideas, (E), come to mind, while you constantly check with yourself to see whether you feel at peace with the decision, (I). All these voices run through you at the same time. It is like a committee meeting where all the different styles compete with one another for attention. It’s a pure mess. Thus it’s not strange that when you have a really big problem to solve you get physically and emotionally exhausted. Your whole body hurts.

There is a difference between processing the (P), (A), (E), and (I) roles–between processing information with your instincts, mind, gut, or heart.

In processing (P), (A), and (E) roles you try to manage the process as best you can: You debate with your gut feelings, you challenge your instincts, and argue with your thoughts. When processing (P), (A), and (E) , you “talk” to the various parts of your body. You disagree with them. You may even get mad at them. It is as if you are the center and they are on the outskirts.

With the heart, (I), it is different. You do not argue with the heart, you listen to the heart. It is as if you subject yourself to something bigger, more powerful, than you. You are not the center any more. You say, “My heart tells me…” Compare that to what you say when you activate your mind: “I have to think it over.” Thinking it over, and over again, means that you are having a debate.

Now the weird stuff: Assume that “out there” is a cosmic, total, ultimate data warehouse. But it is not just data or knowledge, it is the ultimate wisdom based on values, the ultimate truth. It is endless, fixed energy with consciousness. (For me, that is God.) To connect to this cosmic energy you need to open your heart, to listen to your heart. It is as if the heart is the way to connect to God.

How do you hear the heart? How do you listen to it? Through meditation. Not through prayer. Prayer is like trying to manipulate God, pleading and begging him to act. If he does not listen to your prayer you might feel cheated, angry, and deceived.

When you pray, you talk to God. In meditation you listen to God. When you pray you make requests. Perhaps meekly, but no matter how nicely it is packaged and how much you are offering to “pay,” that is, what sacrifices you are willing to make, it is like a purchase order. When you meditate you listen to what God wants from you, not what you want from God. That is the difference.

Listen to your heart. That is where the truth is. Listen to the heart and you will not feel you made a mistake when you decide. If your heart is not ready to decide, you are not ready.

How should you make a decision then?

How should you decide? Here is the optimal path, the road less traveled. This is the lifecycle I suggested for organizations in my Managing Corporate Lifecycles book: Start with (I). Start with your heart first. Ask your heart first what is the right thing to do. Then go get some ideas about what to do, (E), but in doing so do not violate what your heart dictates. Then check those ideas to see if they make sense, (A), and finally be ready to act, (P) but first go back to the heart and check if you are at peace.
If more people would start with their heart and not with their penis, (P), maybe there would be less war, less divorce, less crime. Maybe we ought to teach meditation in prisons. Scientific tests of transcendental meditation have shown that when a certain percentage of people in a community meditate, there is less crime.

In yoga, they say that the mind is a terrorist. It often terrorizes our bodies, making us do things that are not good for us. I once saw a bumper sticker that said, “Do not always believe what you think.” For me this is profound because we Jews not only honor the mind, we worship the mind. With our Talmudic minds, we often complicate problems even when they are simple. We overdo and over-complicate our decision making, sometimes to the point that we cannot solve the problem. We do not listen to our instincts very well. In order to survive two thousand years of persecution, I wonder if we have not closed our hearts except to each other.

Separation Anxiety: Why It Happens And How To Support Your Child

Sometimes the human brain outsmarts itself. And this is exactly what is happening for children struggling with separation anxiety.

It often goes like this. You get them all pumped up for being brave at school drop-off. You remind them that they will get to do all sorts of fun things during the school day like play with their friends, and run around in gym class, oh and it’s hot lunch day today so you highlight that too. But you get to the classroom door and it’s a no-go.

The tears come. The clinging begins. The teary face buried in your shoulder arrives. Eventually the teacher comes and pries your child off of you, crying and desperate to stay with you. You hit the parking lot, maybe with some tears of your own.

And the next morning you prepare to do it all again.

Separation anxiety.

What causes separation anxiety?

We are wired for connection, and particularly in times of stress, danger, or upset we long for it and seek it with intensity. This longing for connection is primal – a basic instinctual need that our psyche drives at relentlessly.

For many children separation anxiety comes out with back to school because the experience of heading into a classroom is stressful, perceived as dangerous, or otherwise upsetting to them. This could be because of a sensitive temperament, learning exceptionalities that make the school day particularly challenging, too much that is new or unknown, negative experiences with friends or teachers, the coming on of a cold or illness, general fatigue, or something else that you haven’t quite been able to put your finger on.

Separation anxiety as survival

Regardless of the cause, this stress alerts the survival centre of your child’s brain that danger is upon her. Rational thought is now no longer going to be operational. Rather instinct will take over, singularly focused on ensuring a connection with their parent.

The drive for connection will have the child engaging in what psychologists call “pursuit behaviors” – anything that will keep you close. Clinging, crying, melting down, pleading. All in a desperate attempt to have you save her from the (perceived) impending danger. And to the child, this feels like actual danger! It is not a ploy or a conscious manipulation. It is as though you have asked her to jump off a two-story building. In this moment she is literally pleading with you to save her.

What not to do when separation anxiety settles in

Because separation anxiety can throw a real wrench into settling your child into school, we can sometimes make the mistake of trying to hurry it along or squash it down. Here are some common missteps that you should try to avoid.

Do not try to reason with separation anxiety. Trying to prove your child wrong by telling them that school is fun, playing with friends is great, and hot lunch is awesome, is never going to actually convince them that they will be okay. Why? Rational thought is not part of separation anxiety.

Avoid trying to solve separation anxiety with sink or swim approaches. Forcing a child to face their biggest fear to make them realize there is nothing to be afraid of is highly problematic. There is a very significant risk of the child being utterly flooded by alarm, which can lead to other problems. One such problem is that they could numb out to the fear – and everything else. Psychologists call this dissociation. It is the brain’s way of protecting the child from overwhelming upset. This makes learning and social interactions hard. It can also be why parents hear the classic “she was fine as soon as you left” feedback.

The second is that while the child holds it together for that particular day, the survival brain has now been alerted to the impending threat of your swift departure. So if you thought today’s resistance at the classroom door was hard, just you wait to see what is coming tomorrow.

Do not use rewards or consequences. The use of rewards or consequences has the central flaw of assuming that this “behavior” is within the child’s control. It is not. It is an instinctual reaction from the survival centre of the brain and is highly alarming for the child in an utterly consuming way.

Avoid shaming. Sometimes adults try to use “alarm against alarm” by shaming a child. Using language like “you are acting like a baby” or calling upon social judgment with something like “everybody is looking at you” causes the child to be even more alarmed which can lead to numbing out and intensified behavioral push-back, as described above. It also comes at the cost of the child’s relational connection with you. You no longer feel safe.

Avoid anger. Separation anxiety sometimes alarms parents as well. What if my child isn’t normal? What if everybody is judging me? As a parent’s alarm gets the better of them, anger can erupt. The child experiences this as a “relational disconnect” – something upsetting to them at the best of times, but potentially catastrophically so during separation anxiety, when the child is instinctually driven to connect to us to preserve themselves.

 

What you can do to help your child with separation anxiety

Being the expert on your child’s personality and temperament, and combining that with some knowledge about the survival brain and general child development, there are actually a lot of things you can do as a parent to help your child who might be struggling with separation anxiety.

  • Artful introductions. As a basic principle of social psychology, we tend to like people who like us. You can facilitate an understanding of a blossoming fondness between your child and his teacher, making it more comfortable for your child to be left in the care of the teacher. It might sound something like “did you see the smile on Ms. Robinson’s face this morning when she said hello to you? I think she is taking a shine to you!” Or maybe to the teacher you might say “Michael came home yesterday and all he could talk about was how much he likes the stories you tell in class – I think he is really enjoying you!”
  • Birds of a feather. Look for a common ground between your child and her teacher. Maybe they both love reading mystery novels. Or maybe the both play guitar. Or maybe they are both science junkies. Find something that is the same between them and shine a light on it. As another basic principle of social psychology, we also tend to like people who are the same as us.
  • Pass the connection spark. Your child is going to take his cues from you in terms of what is safe and not safe. It helps for your child to see that your connection with his teacher is solid and positive. So be certain that you are tending to that as you work to have your child be more settled in the classroom.
  • Be certain and confident. It is hard as a parent to watch your child go to pieces. As part of your wiring, you are going to want to rush in and solve it. Every child is their own individual and as a parent, you will have to step your way forward in a manner inspired by your child’s needs. Whatever this looks like for you, step forward with gumption and swagger so your child can just “smell” that you’ve got this.
  • Script it. Make sure you tell your child the whole sequence of what will happen from beginning until end in the day.   • Go to school “with” them. Find ways to be at school with your child figuratively. For example, send magic kisses captured in a locket that hangs around their neck. Or be connected by an invisible string. Or laminate a little picture of you loving on your child that they can tuck into their pocket. Be creative!

  • Highlight “hello” rather than “goodbye.” Spend as little time as possible focused on all the things the child is going to do through the school day. Instead, orient the child’s brain to when you will be back together again. So maybe it sounds like “We will walk to school, Mr. Smith will meet us at your classroom door, I will help you get settled, you will have your school day, and then as soon as art is over I will be coming back to pick you up and we will go for a play at the park on our way home.”
  • Have some goodbye rituals. Do you have a way you say goodbye? Is it a family cheer in the car in the parking lot? A wink and an ear-tug on your way out the door that your child does back to you? A little saying you whisper into each other’s ear? Routines and rituals help our brains stay calm. Come up with a goodbye ritual to serve this quieting purpose for your child.
  • Try a gradual entry. If you have the sense that your child is really going to struggle with separation anxiety, or if you can see that this is already not going well you might try gradually extending the time your child spends in the classroom over a period of days or weeks.   • Tears are lovely

    One of the universal proximity seeking behaviors of children the world over is crying. When our children cry, it us unsettling to us, driving us to stay close and take care of the tears. Sometimes this becomes confusing though when we find ourselves rushing to prevent tears because we don’t want the experience – for them or for us – of being unsettled. But the goal of “no tears” is not necessarily one you want to hang on to. Sometimes tears are actually a necessary part of adaptation and core to nurturing resilience in your growing child. Your sign of “success” in settling your child is not necessarily going to be a tear-free drop off. It is okay if your child cries at the classroom door as long as there is a nurturing, connected adult available to support your child through those tears.

    Shy is healthy

    Children who are come across as “shy” often have a more difficult time with separation anxiety. And sometimes this has us thinking about “shy” as a bad thing. But answer this question: Do you want your child doing the bidding of someone who is not part of her inner circle? Of course the answer is “no.”

    Luckily, children are wired to resist the influence of outsiders. That resistance is what we call shyness. It is a lovely, normal, instinctual, healthy thing that we need to honor. If your child happens to be more sensitive, intense, or otherwise needs a little extra TLC, her shyness may come out more strongly, making the experience of separation anxiety more likely. And that’s okay. It needs to be worked with rather than against.

    What if it never gets better?

    The vast majority of children will respond well to the efforts described here, and you should see your child comfortably settling into the classroom within 3-4 weeks of the school year start. However, a small percentage of children will continue to struggle.

    How do you know when enough is enough and it has simply become too much?

    • If it continues for longer than the first month of school with intensity
    • If you are seeing significant behavioral repercussions at home
    • If your child’s sleep has become interrupted in a significant way
    • If your child cannot manage to be alone anywhere in your home
    • If your child develops physical health ailments that appear to be psychosomatic in nature (the mind-body connection) – headaches, stomachaches, frequent vomiting, ongoing virus, etc.

    These are all signs that things are not progressing and that it might be time to find a professional to help support you as you work to support your child. In selecting somebody for that role, make sure they have a strong understanding of child development and that they are prepared to work together with you – the expert on your child – leading the way.

    Beautiful Words Have Power

    “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging symbol,” St. Paul wrote in his first letter to the Corinthians two thousand years ago. “If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have faith that I can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor, and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.” Paul bequeathed us faith, hope and love -these three — “but the greatest of these,” he said, “is love.”
    Paul passed away, as we all must in our time, but he continues to enrich the human experience with his beautiful words that are timeless. It should be noted that when Paul spoke of love, he was not talking about romance between a man and a woman, but rather love for our fellow human beings. Interestingly, the scholars working for King James translated that key phrase as “faith, hope and charity” which I believe came closer to Paul’s meaning.
    “We hold these truths to be self-evident,” wrote Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence two centuries ago, “that all men are created equal. That they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Jefferson and his editors among the Founding Fathers toyed with that last one. Some wanted to say “life, liberty and property.” But they hesitated to assert that everyone was entitled by God to property. I am glad they chose “pursuit of happiness” instead of “pursuit of property,” for the words are beautiful in their vague simplicity. Like the words of St. Paul, they have stood the test of time and still inspire people.
    Some are troubled by Jefferson’s eloquence about liberty because of his hypocrisy as a slave owner, and he was certainly aware of that even within the context of his own time. Jefferson knew slavery was evil and acknowledged as much, saying it alarmed him “like a fire bell in the night” as if he had foreseen the consequences that would ensue for that failure to deal with the worst blot on our nation’s history. That was left for another great wordsmith to deal with.
    “Fourscore and seven years ago, our forefathers brought forth on this continent a new nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal,” opined Abraham Lincoln at the dedication of the military cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1863. “We are now engaged in a great Civil War testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.” He concluded his short address with the hope that “government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth.”
    St. Paul, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln shared a gift for beautiful words – constructing sentences that soar beyond mere communication to touch the heart and inspire humanity to rise above its mean estate. It is difficult to imagine President-elect Trump joining this company – tweets do not often sustain eloquence – but you never know. If he can summon President Reagan’s speechwriter Peggy Noonan back to Washington, anything is possible.

    3 Ways I Get My Kids Excited For Bedtime During The Holidays

    The one thing that all parents of young children have in common? We cherish our sleep. That’s not surprising since we don’t get very much of it. Whether we’re escorting our kids on a late-night potty break or waking to one of their lovely 5 a.m. calls on the weekend (the same wake-up that never seems to come during the week), it’s pretty much a given that, as parents, our slumber will be interrupted.

    But in order for our children to wake us up, they first have to be put to bed. And just like every family, my little ones and I have quirky nighttime routines and rituals that make our bedtime a memorable experience. When the holidays roll around for my family, everything about getting ready for a good night’s sleep becomes even more fun. Here are a few ways we prime the kids — and ourselves — for bedtime during the holidays.

    1. Keep bedtime silly with “pajama time.”

    When it comes to our pajamas, we go all out. You can expect to find me in a head-to-toe adult hooded onesie with pockets. My two young daughters have their own versions, too. Sure, it’s adorable seeing my little ones in those pajamas, but when a 6-feet-2-inch, 205-pound man wears them, it definitely elicits a few stares — especially when I open the door for the pizza delivery person. (Note to self: Have my video camera rolling the next time a stranger sees me in those PJs.)

    Pajama time is important because, as a parent, I spend a good portion of my day in an authority role teaching my kiddos right from wrong. But, as each day comes to a close, I want them to have the memory of knowing that daddy can be silly, too. Laughter is such a powerful tool in parenting, and I plan to use it to the fullest advantage. Plus, there’s something about being in your pajamas just relaxes you — all the better to drift off to sleep.

    2. Focus on the good of the day.

    My kids are 5 and 3 years old and they fully believe in Santa Claus. They also understand that Santa doesn’t deliver presents to naughty people, so we end the night by discussing the good things they did during the day. I’m not looking for amazing acts of charity here — it could be something as simple as smiling at another kid at school, or sharing toys on the playground.

    In our current world, I believe there is absolutely nothing more important than being a good person. Sure, in this instance the payoff is receiving Christmas gifts, but my role is to dig deeper and ask my kids some follow-up questions, like: “How did it make your friend feel when you shared your toy with her?”

    As they find themselves drifting off to sleep, my hope is that they’ll understand the wonderful feeling of being a good person is better than any gift they’ll receive from Santa.

    3. Remember the wonderful reason why you’re so tired.

    Almost every day I spend with my kids ends in complete exhaustion. After running around the city for school meetings, play dates and basketball practice, nothing excites me more than getting into my bed and drifting off to sleep. I also know that a big responsibility as a parent is to make sure my daughters go to sleep in a positive state of mind.

    So, as we exhausted parents get our kiddos ready for bed this holiday season, remember that no matter how tired we are, it’s a welcome trade-off for the love and fulfillment they provide us in return.

    Donald Trump Attends ‘Villains And Heroes’ Costume Party As Himself

    NEW YORK  – U.S. President-elect Donald Trump attended a “Villains and Heroes” costume party at a major donor’s Long Island home on Saturday night, but declined to don any garb that was in keeping with the theme.

    Trump entered the party hosted by the Mercer family, one of his biggest donors, at their home in the village of Head of the Harbor in St. James, N.Y., wearing a suit and a blue and white checked tie. Security guards at the event however were dressed as biker gang members Hell’s Angels.

    Trump walked into the home and gave reporters, who were not allowed inside, the thumbs up and posed briefly for photos, but did not respond to questions except to mouth “me,” pointing to himself when asked who he was dressed as.

    Trump spoke briefly at the party, thanking the Mercer family, according to a member of his press team, staying for just under two hours. It was his only outing from his Manhattan home on Saturday.

    None of Trump’s immediate family members attended, but his campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, was on hand, dressed as Super Woman. Trump’s designated White House strategist Steve Bannon was also on hand, but appeared not to be in costume.

    Music by Adele, Lady Gaga, Shakira, Sia and Céline Dion emanated from the Christmas light decorated home.

    A wifi network set up for the party used the password “HeroesWin!”

    Robert Mercer, the billionaire at whose mansion on Long Island’s tony North Shore the party was held, is co-chief executive of Renaissance Technologies, a hedge fund. Daughter Rebekah Mercer sits on Trump’s transition team. Trump is in the midst of choosing cabinet members.

    Mercer initially supported Ted Cruz for the Republican nomination before putting his support behind Trump in the November presidential election.

    5 Things That Will Make You Much Happier

    There’s enough advice on happiness floating around out there to make your head spin. Yet, this is understandable, as everyone is different. What makes one person happy might make another miserable.

    In the face of so much contradictory, and often subjective, advice, what are you supposed to do if you want to live a happier life? Just forget about all that subjective advice and focus your energy and attention on science-proven facts.


    “Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.” – Dalai Lama

    UCLA neuroscience researcher Alex Korb has spent a great deal of time studying the effects of different happiness strategies on the brain. His findings have a lot to teach us about what actually works when it comes to boosting happiness.

    Korb’s research demonstrated that your thoughts–and the emotions you feel in response to those thoughts–have a profound impact on surprising areas of your brain.

    Guilt and shame, for example, activate the brain’s reward center, which explains why we have such a strong tendency to heap guilt and shame upon ourselves. Likewise, worrying increases activity in the prefrontal cortex (the rational brain), which is why worrying can make you feel more in control than doing nothing at all.

    1. Gratitude creates happiness. I’m not advocating worry, guilt, and shame as the path to happiness. The illustration shows why we tend to succumb to thoughts that fuel these emotions. The real neural antidepressant is gratitude. Gratitude boosts levels of serotonin and dopamine–the brain’s happy chemicals and the same chemicals targeted by antidepressant medications. The striking thing about gratitude is that it can work even when things aren’t going well for you. That’s because you don’t actually have to feel spontaneous gratitude in order to produce chemical changes in your brain; you just have to force yourself to think about something in your life that you appreciate. This train of thought activates your brain to make you feel happier.

    2. Labeling negative feelings dilutes their power. There is an amazing amount of power in simply labeling your negative emotions. In one study, participants underwent fMRI scans of their brains while they labeled negative emotions. When they named these emotions, the brain’s prefrontal cortex took over and the amygdala (where emotions are generated) calmed down. This effect doesn’t just work with your own emotions; labeling the emotions of other people calms them down too, which is why FBI hostage negotiators frequently rely on this technique.

    3. Making decisions feels good. Similar to naming emotions, making decisions engages the prefrontal cortex, which calms the amygdala and the rest of the limbic system. The key is to make a “good enough” decision. Trying to make the perfect decision causes stress. We’ve always known that, but now there’s scientific research that explains why. Making a “good enough” decision activates the dorsolateral prefrontal areas of the brain, calming emotions down and helping you feel more in control. Trying to make a perfect decision, on the other hand, ramps up ventromedial frontal activity–which basically means your emotions get overly involved in the decision-making process.

    4. It helps you to lend a hand.Taking the time to help your colleagues not only makes them happy but also makes you happy. Helping other people gives you a surge of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, all of which create good feelings. In a Harvard study, employees who helped others were 10 times more likely to be focused at work and 40% more likely to get a promotion. The same study showed that people who consistently provided social support to others were the most likely to be happy during times of high stress. As long as you make certain that you aren’t overcommitting yourself, helping others is sure to have a positive influence on your happiness.

    5. Our brains are wired for touch. Humans are social animals, to the point that our brains react to social exclusion in the same way that they react to physical pain, with activity in the anterior cingulate and insula. Similarly, our brains are hardwired to interpret touch as social acceptance. Touch is one of the primary stimuli for releasing oxytocin, which calms the amygdala and, in turn, calms emotions. There are even studies that show that holding hands with a loved one actually reduces the brain’s response to pain. You might think that’s bad news for people who are socially isolated, but studies show that a massage increases serotonin by as much as 30%. Touch reduces stress hormones, decreases the perception of pain, improves sleep, and reduces fatigue.

    Bringing It All Together

    Kolb’s research highlights just how amazing the brain is, and he summarized his findings succinctly when he said, “Everything is interconnected. Gratitude improves sleep. Sleep reduces pain. Reduced pain improves your mood. Improved mood reduces anxiety, which improves focus and planning. Focus and planning help with decision-making. Decision-making further reduces anxiety and improves enjoyment. Enjoyment gives you more to be grateful for, which keeps that loop of the upward spiral going. Enjoyment makes it more likely you’ll exercise and be social, which, in turn, makes you happier.”

    Pectoralis Muscle, Tendon Tear


    The pectoralis major is a large muscle that lies in front of the chest wall (Figure 1). It is a powerful adductor, internal rotator, and flexor of the shoulder.

    The pectoralis major has two heads; the clavicular head (upper part) and the sternal head (lower part) (Figure 2).

    The pectoralis major muscle works to push the arm in front of the body. Ruptures of the pectoralis major muscle are due to weight training, particularly during a bench press maneuver (Figure 3). Ruptures or tears of the muscle are uncommon.

    The patient will experience pain while extending the arm. Ecchymosis is present down the arm. The pain is worsened with resisted adduction and extension. There will also be a loss of normal contour of the axillary fold (Figure 4).

    The rupture usually occurs in males 20-50 years old, weight lifters (especially those practicing bench press), football players and wrestlers. The rupture can occur in the absence of taking steroids. It usually occurs as a complete tear from the bony insertion of the humerus.

    How do you prevent a rupture?
    To prevent a rupture one must practice the proper bench press technique, limit the distance the bar is lowered, and narrow the grip of the hands on the bar.

    Treatment
    For a complete tear of the pectoralis major muscle, it must be repaired early. A delayed or chronic rupture, which usually occurs longer than a few months, will probably require a tendon graft. The muscle is retracted and the operation is difficult. The result is not as good as in an acute repair.

    Acute Repair
    The tendon is sutured and attached to the humerus with anchors (Figure 5). The sutures are tightened to approximate the tendon to the bone.

Dynamic analysis of poverty requires panel data and the lack of it has been the limiting factor in developing countries until recently. Over the last decade, a growing amount of panel data sets for developing countries has enabled researchers to start addressing the movements in poverty and the factors explaining these movements. Using a panel data of three years, this volume addresses two broader issues of poverty. The first is related to understanding the level of poverty and the correlates thereof. It starts with issues related to measurement and analysis of poverty, and goes on to analyze the dynamics of poverty. It also addresses the impact of two safety net programs, the Food for Work (FFW) and the Food Security Package (FSP) programs, upon transient and chronic poverty. The second issue is on rural assets. It focused on livestock and social capital to analyze the importance of assets to household welfare.

    Watch 15 Years Of Earthquakes Rock The Planet

    Make no mistake: Earth is a powerful and, at times, violent planet. And if you had any doubts, this new jaw-dropping animation ought to put them to rest.

    The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center released a video Friday mapping every earthquake as it occurred from Jan. 1, 2001, through Dec. 31, 2015. 

    The visual as mesmerizing and enlightening as it is frightening.  

    As seen above, earthquakes appear as colorful circles, with colors representing depth, and size representing magnitude. Each second represents 30 days. 

    There’s no shortage of activity ― Earth’s tectonic plate boundaries light up like a Christmas tree. 

    At the end of the animation, every recorded tremor over that 15-year period is shown, followed by only those quakes greater than magnitudes 6.5 and 8.

    “This time period includes some remarkable events,” including several quakes that caused “devastating tsunamis,” NOAA wrote in a post about the animation.

    Those tsunami-generating quakes include the devastating 9.1-magnitude tremor in Sumatra in 2004, an 8.8 magnitude in Chile in 2010 and the 9.0-magnitude quake off Japan’s northeastern coast in 2011 that killed nearly 16,000 people and caused a meltdown of nuclear reactors at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

    WATCH: Embracing the Mystery (Not Having All the Answers)

    We’ll Remember Cuba’s Ebola Compassion Long After Castro’s Death

    While the Cuban government’s accomplishments and failures are still being tallied in the days following Fidel Castro’s death on Nov. 25, the island nation’s health care system is one achievement expected to stand the test of history. 

    One striking example of the country’s unique health footprint: For a nation with only 11 million people, Cuba sent an unparalleled number of medical personnel to fight the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the Wall Street Journal reported in 2014.

    When Ebola spread through West Africa in 2014, Cuba announced that it would send more than 460 doctors and nurses to West Africa. The epidemic ultimately killed 11,310 people, more than any previous outbreak, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 

    Ultimately Cuba deployed approximately 265 medical personnel to Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia, according to the World Health Organization.

    For comparison’s sake, in November 2014, President Obama promised just 65 health professionals, supported by 4,000 U.S. troops. (WHO said it’s difficult to track actual personnel deployed from the U.S. because they weren’t a unified group like the Cubans were. Americans may have volunteered with nongovernmental organizations, for example.)

    “[Cuba] has become something like the world’s first responder to international crises in recent years,” Jon Lee Anderson wrote in The New Yorker in 2014. Indeed, Cuba’s 50,000 roving medical professionals stationed in more than 60 countries are often the first foreign health workers at catastrophes around the world. Cuban doctors, for example cared for almost 40 percent of victims during Haiti’s devastating 2010 earthquake, according to The Guardian. The deployments are the result of a longtime Cuban program to send health care workers abroad as a way to boost its image and to trade services for goods for the embargoed island.

    The Cuban medical response is built on a larger culture of population health. Cuban doctors practice prevention-oriented primary care and are responsible for improving the overall health of their patient populations. Cuba also has one of the best doctor-to-population ratios in the world, meaning the country spends far less money per person on health care costs than does the United States, but it boasts a better child mortality rate and similar life expectancy

    According to the World Bank, in 2010 Cuba had 6.7 doctors per 1,000 people, compared with the United States’ 2.5 doctors per 1,000 people.

    “Unlike students trained in the U.S. or Western Europe, Cuban students are trained to improve population health status,” Dr. C. William Keck, professor emeritus at Northeast Ohio Medical University, previously told The Huffington Post. 

    “We certainly aren’t here. When I went to medical school, I was taught to do battle with disease one patient at a time. You dealt with what came in the door. You didn’t focus much on the community. It’s a much different approach,” said Keck, who is a member of the Medical Education Cooperation with Cuba, a nonprofit that promotes U.S.-Cuba health collaborations.

    That dedication to community health extends beyond Cuba’s borders. 

    “We know what can happen. We know we’re going to a hostile environment,” Cuban doctor Leonardo Fernandez told Reuters before he left to fight Ebola in West Africa in 2014.

    “But it is our duty. That’s how we’ve been educated. This little bit that we have, when people need it, we are capable of sharing. It’s a basic concept.”

    The Obamas Light Their Last Christmas Tree As The First Family

    The Obamas lit up the start of the holiday season for their last time as the first family of the United States, and they did it with the help of a few sparkling friends.

    A parade of celebrities joined Michelle, Sasha and President Barack Obama on Thursday to ring in the season during the 94th Annual National Christmas Tree Lighting at the White House’s President’s Park.

    The ceremony, which has been held every year since President Calvin Coolidge began it in 1923, was hosted by actress Eva Longoria.

    Some of the country’s most celebrated musical artists from nearly every genre came to celebrate with the Obamas, with performances by Kelly Clarkson, Chance the Rapper, Marc Anthony, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, and The Lumineers.

    Obama used the ceremony’s closing remarks to urge the country to love and accept every single person, regardless of faith or race. 

    “It’s a message of unity and a message of decency and a message of hope that never goes out of style. And it’s one that we all need very much today,” Obama told the crowd. “After eight years as your president, I still believe that there is so much more that unites us than divides us.”

    The traditional ceremony was as wholesome as it was glamorous, with a reading of “A Visit From St. Nicholas” by the first lady and Simone Manuel, the first female African-American swimmer to win an Olympic gold medal.

    This year’s tree-lighting marks the last time the Obamas will participate in the White House tradition. Next year’s presidential tree lighting will likely be hosted by the Trump family.

    What is a hard thing to do in life? Understanding that your life is not a television show.

    One of the hardest things to understand about my life has been the fact that it is not episodic. That is to say, most of the time life is not full of “important stuff.” My life isn’t a television show. It is mostly the stuff that happens between each episode.

    Most of the time, important stuff happens when you least expect it, and when you’re barely ready for it. The majority of your time will be spent between the important stuff. This includes:

    • Doing laundry.
    • Folding laundry.
    • Grocery shopping.
    • Paying bills.
    • Picking small crumbs up from your floor so as to delay vacuuming.

    This is difficult to swallow as you get older and cease to be ushered from event to event and hand-delivered meaningful experiences. Most of the time, we’re doing what has to be done in order to better position ourselves for what we wish to do.

    If this sounds like drudgery, that’s because it is. There are some pretty salient myths about the joy of daily life, and I think we are lead to believe that a happy life is one filled each day with intrigue and adventure. We are not the Great Gatsby. Most of my day is a grind – and I actually enjoy my job.

    If you can’t be happy with the things in front of you, no great plot line is going to save you from that.

    How D.C.’s Mayor Plans To End The HIV Epidemic In The Capitol’s Backyard

    More than 13,000 people are living with HIV in Washington, D.C. That’s 2 percent of the city’s population, or double the rate that constitutes an “epidemic” in the eyes of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

    Nancy Mahon, global executive director of the MAC AIDS Fund, the philanthropic arm of the cosmetic company MAC, says it’s “shameful” that the infection rate is so high “in the backyard of our nation’s Capitol” ― especially given the United States’ leading role in funding international AIDS work.

    While D.C.’s infection rate has fallen from its height of 3 percent in 2009 ― a rate that was higher than that of West Africa ― the level of infection is still unacceptable, said D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser at an event Thursday kicking off the city’s newest plan to combat the epidemic.

    Last year, Bowser and the city’s department of health announced that they would work with the Washington AIDS Partnership and the DC Appleseed Center for Law and Justice on an initiative to end the HIV epidemic in the District by 2020. The effort, they said, would be known as the 90/90/90/50 Plan.

    They outlined the details of that plan on Thursday, during an event scheduled to coincide with World AIDS Day. The plan stresses four goals: to ensure that 90 percent of D.C. residents living with HIV will know their status; that 90 percent of people diagnosed with HIV will be in treatment; that 90 percent of people in treatment will achieve viral load suppression; and that there will be a 50 percent decrease in new HIV infections, all by 2020.

    This plan builds on the 90-90-90 goals that UNAIDS, the United Nations organization committed to dealing with the disease, set out two years ago. D.C. joins New York state and San Francisco, which have set similar goals.

    Those places are leading the charge nationally, said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. This plan is the kind of thing that leads to a tidal wave of cities trying to copy cities,” Fauci told The Huffington Post. “The goal is that we should be striving for this worldwide, but if we can do this in the U.S. in high-level cities, this is a good step in the right direction.”

    To achieve those goals, D.C. plans to build on the success of the city’s needle exchange program, which has reduced the number of new HIV cases among injection drug users by 95 percent since it was introduced in 2007. The city’s plans also include educational programs for health care providers, a push to reduce the stigma around the disease, and an effort to increase public awareness and accessibility of treatments like Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, or PrEP ― a drug regimen used to prevent infections among people who are at high risk for contracting HIV. It also calls for renewed efforts to make sure D.C. residents have access to stable housing, which the plan’s authors say is essential to overall wellness goals.

    The MAC AIDS Fund has also provided a $ 1 million grant for a marketing campaign to encourage D.C.’s black women to use PrEP. Black women are the second highest at-risk group in the district, accounting for 1 in 6 new HIV diagnoses.

    “I don’t think it’s any mistake that both the mayor and the director [of the D.C. Department of Health] are African-American women, and they are the first people in the country to do this,” Mahon said ― a reference to Bowser and to DOH’s Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt.

    The MAC AIDS Fund has donated a total of $ 8.7 million to D.C. over the past decade. The latest grant is part of its $ 6.6 million initiative aimed at curbing HIV rates in cities around the globe, with campaigns in Paris, Berlin, Mexico City and London.

    Walter Smith, the executive director of DC Appleseed, a nonprofit organization dedicated to solving public policy problems in the nation’s capital, said Thursday that the innovation in D.C.’s 90/90/90/50 Plan lies in its public and private partnerships, which he hopes can serve as an example for other cities.

    “Given where we started, we came from a situation where the District of Columbia was setting a bad example for the nation ― we all knew where we were with HIV/AIDS was absolutely unacceptable,” he said. “We have come so far [from] that with this plan. We are on the verge of setting a good example for the nation.”

    Fauci went even further in his praise.

    “The dynamics of plans like this,” he said, “can turn around outbreaks.”

    Newt Gingrich Just Called Mitt Romney A Suck-Up

    Speculation among Republican insiders over who will serve in Donald Trump’s Cabinet is starting to turn into “Mean Girls.” 

    On Wednesday, Newt Gingrich called possible secretary of State nominee Mitt Romney a suck-up.

    Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, was once fiercely critical of Trump, but he offered nothing but praise for him after the two met for dinner in New York on Tuesday night. 

    But Gingrich was having none of it.

    “There’s a scene in ‘Pretty Woman’ where Richard Gere goes up to the salesman on Rodeo Drive and says, ‘We need a little sucking up here,’” Gingrich told conservative talk-show host Laura Ingraham. “You have never, ever in your career seen a serious adult who’s wealthy, independent, has been a presidential nominee, suck up at the rate that Mitt Romney is sucking up.”

    The former speaker of the House and Ingraham, who is under consideration for White House press secretary, then proceeded to crack jokes about the fancy meal at French chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s restaurant at the Trump International Hotel and Tower.

    After all that, Gingrich said he would support Romney if he is selected to be secretary of State. 

    Gingrich served as a Trump surrogate during the campaign and was under consideration for the vice president’s slot, which eventually went to Indiana Gov. Mike Pence. 

    However, since Trump’s victory, Gingrich has said he will not take a Cabinet position with the incoming administration

    How Left-Handed People Think And Feel Differently

    Lefties historically have had a tendency to get left behind. Until relatively recently, being left-handed was stigmatized, sometimes as an abnormality or sign of weakness. Left-handed children were forced to learn to write with their right hands, often to their significant disadvantage

    Of course, we now know that there’s nothing wrong with being left-handed. As University of Toledo psychologist Stephen Christman recently explained in Scientific American, there’s almost no evidence to suggest that lefties are at any sort of physical or psychological disadvantage. For one thing, lefties have comprised roughly 10 percent to 15 percent of the general population for many thousands of years. The fact that the trait has remained stable over many generations suggests that left-handedness is not an evolutionary weakness, as many psychologists of the past believed. 

    But handedness does come with certain physiological and neurological differences. Research remains incomplete, but here are some things we know about the unique cognitive and psychological profiles of the left-handed:

    Lefties may be able to use both sides of their brain more easily and efficiently. 

    According to an Australian study published in 2006 in the journal Neuropsychology, left-handed people tend to have faster connections between the right and left hemispheres of the brain, which leads to quicker information processing. The study authors measured participants’ performance on a task that assessed transfer time between brain hemispheres, and one that required them to use both sides of their brain at the same time. 

    The research revealed that left-handed participants were faster at processing information across the two sides of the brain ― a cognitive advantage that could benefit them in things like video games and sports.   

    They may be left-favoring in decision-making processes. 

    The hand you use may have a surprising effect on the way you judge abstract ideas, like value, intelligence and honesty.

    A 2009 Stanford University study found that left-handed and right-handed people may engage in an implicit favoring of their dominant side. In the study, participants viewed two columns of illustrations and were asked to judge which seemed more happy, honest, intelligent and attractive. Left-handers implicitly chose illustrations in the left column, and righties tended to choose images on the right side. 

    “For left-handed people, implicitly, they think good stuff is on the left and bad stuff is on the right, even though consciously, explicitly, everything in language and culture is telling them the exact opposite,” the study’s lead author, psychologist Daniel Casasanto, said in a statement

    Lefties have the upper hand in some sports. 

    While less than 15 percent of the general population is left-handed, 25 percent of Major League baseball players are lefties. Why? It may be because they tend to have faster reaction times, as the 2006 Australian study cited above found.

    But there’s another reason. Studies have found that lefties seem to have a real advantage in interactive sports, such as boxing, fencing, tennis and baseball ― but this advantage doesn’t extend to non-interactive sports, like gymnastics and diving. It’s possible that because of their different physical orientation and movements, lefties are able throw off right-handed opponents, who are used to going up against other righties. 

    Their brains may organize emotion differently. 

    Your dominant hand may determine how emotions are arranged in your brain. A 2012 study published in the journal PLoS ONE found that in left-handers, motivation was associated with greater activity in the right hemisphere of the brain, while the opposite was true of right-handers.  

    This may have important implications in caring for anxiety and mood disorders, which are sometimes treated using brain stimulation to increase neural activity in the left hemisphere.

    “Given what we show here, this treatment, which helps right-handers, may be detrimental to left-handers ― the exact opposite of what they need,” one of the study’s authors, psychologist Geoffrey Brookshire, said in a statement.   

    Lefties may be more creative thinkers. 

    Many experts and studies have suggested a link between left-handedness and creativity. Is it real? Quite possibly. Some research has found that lefties are better at divergent thinking (the ability to think of many solutions to a single problem), a cognitive hallmark of creativity. However, it’s important to note that studies show correlation, not causality, so the findings aren’t entirely conclusive. 

    Another possibility, proposed by University College London psychologist Chris McManus in his book Right-Hand, Left-Hand, is that the brains of lefties have a more highly developed right hemisphere, which has been suggested to be more involved in creative thinking. 

    There’s one additional potential link between left-handedness and creativity ― one that’s speculative but still intriguing. Growing up in the left-handed minority and seeing themselves as different from their peers, some children may come to develop what’s known as an “outsider’s mindset,” or a tendency to have a self-image that’s more individualized rather than group-oriented. Such a mindset can predispose a person to develop qualities like independence and non-conformity, which psychologists have linked to creative thinking and innovation

    Gratitude: The Path to a Meaningful – and Magical – Life

    Long after Thanksgiving is over, two things endure – the feeling that I couldn’t possibly eat another piece of turkey…and, more importantly, a deep sense of gratitude.

    It will come as no surprise, then, to learn that I recently picked up a book called GRATITUDE by Oliver Sacks. It’s a quartet of essays that he wrote in the last two years of his life. Despite his struggles battling cancer, he chose to highlight his immense gratitude – something he felt not only through that ordeal, but through his entire life.

    Here’s what he says about the gifts of old age:

    One has had a long experience of life, not only one’s own life, but others’ too. One has seen triumphs and tragedies, booms and busts, revolutions and wars, great achievements and deep ambiguities… One is more conscious of transience and, perhaps, of beauty.

    Here’s the miracle of such places: With nature’s wonders all around, I feel both very small and very large at once–diminished and humbled by my own insignificance, while also enlarged and inspired by the vast sweep of creation. And both you and I belong to that creation! For we are all made from miracles, no less than the stars themselves.

    One of humanity’s great challenges is to embrace nature without suffocating it–to treat our natural home with appreciation, not exploitation. We have been given the garden planet of the universe–and we can either nurture or devour it, protect or destroy it.

    Fortunately, we have one great advantage in facing any challenges: ourselves. We can accomplish anything if we truly devote ourselves to the task.

    And that, my friend, is worthy of our gratitude.

    6 Science-Backed Tips For Falling Back Asleep That Actually Work

    There’s nothing worse than being wide awake at 4 a.m., staring at the ceiling and willing yourself back to dreamland. Middle-of-the-night wake-ups can happen for many reasons, making it hard and frustrating to combat in the moment.

    How about we break the cycle tonight? We’ve partnered with Sleep Number to bring you six scientifically proven tips and tricks that will have you back to sleep in no time.

    1. Try Acupressure

    Acupressure is an ancient therapy that involves finger placement and pressure over specific points on the body. These points follow the same channels, called meridians, used in acupuncture. Putting pressure (or needles) on these points is believed to promote blood flow and unlock tension ― among other benefits like alleviating lower-back pain and headaches.

    Leigh Gilkey and Siri Michel, licensed acupuncturists and founders of Essential Acupuncture in Chicago, say that self-administered acupressure before bed can promote a restful night of uninterrupted sleep and, in the event of an unwanted nighttime awakening, can help get you back to sleep. A couple of their favorite points to treat insomnia include:

    • Anmian, located behind the ear. Behind the ear is a bone called the mastoid process.  Place your finger on the mastoid process and slide back off the bone and slightly upwards. Look for a little depression and press in a downward motion.
    • Liver 3, located on the top of the foot. Place a finger between the first toe and the second toe and push toward your ankle. There is a depression before the junction of the first and second metatarsal bones. Simply pressing on it or pulling in a downward motion is great for activating this point.

    2. Dunk Your Head In Ice-Cold Water

    Yes, you read that right. Submerge your face into a bowl of ice water; making sure the area below your eyes and above your cheekbones is wet. Hold your breath for 30 seconds before coming back up for air. This will trigger your mammalian diving reflex, an involuntary human response that will automatically slow down your heart rate and encourage your body to calm itself by activating the parasympathetic nervous system. You will be left feeling relaxed and, you guessed it, more ready for sleep.

    3. Reach That Big O

    The reason most of us sleep soundly after sex is because oxytocin, the “love hormone,” counteracts stress hormones that can keep you wide awake. Likewise, the endorphins released during sexual activity ― be it solo or among partners ― are like nature’s sedative, working in tandem to help you fall asleep and stay asleep.

    4. Grab A Snack

    That anxious awakening you get in the middle of the night could be the result of low blood sugar, studies show. The adrenal glands, two walnut-shaped organs that sit atop the kidneys, play a key role in regulating blood sugar, especially as you sleep. When your blood sugar drops significantly through the night, these grands release stress hormones that trigger the body to raise blood sugar levels, and stress hormones are no friend to your beauty sleep.

    While midnight snacks might not be great for your waistline, there are healthy food options to help you fall back asleep, says Michael Breus, a clinical psychologist and sleep specialist. He suggests eating a 250-calorie snack made up of 75 percent carbs, 25 percent protein. Things like an apple with nut butter, a small bowl of non-sugar cereal or frozen Greek yogurt are good options, he says.

    5. Dim Those Lights

    The next time you wake in the middle of the night and head to the kitchen for a midnight snack or a glass of water, try keeping those lights as dim as possible. It’s the same science that proves blue light exposure from cell phones has a bigger impact on decreasing melatonin levels than other light wavelengths.

    “Nighttime light exposure … suppresses the hormone melatonin, which plays an important role in regulating sleep and circadian rhythms,” Breus says in a blog post on his website.

    Though unscientific anecdotes such as living by candlelight can purportedly be better for quality sleep and mindful living, there are safer options. Instead of turning on a light the next time you head to the bathroom in the middle of the night, try instead using a dimmer or another softer light source. You can also buy commercial products that will help limit exposure, like the bulbs from Lighting Science. “These will filter out blue light but still give a nice overall lighting solution,” Breus says.

    6. Keep It Cool

    Falling back asleep may be as simple as lowering the thermostat. Your core body temperature drops at the onset of sleep, which means that a too-warm (or too-cool) room may wake you up. The National Sleep Foundation suggests keeping the bedroom temp around 60 to 68 degrees to get you back to sleep. It’s the ideal temperature scale to layer on those PJs, blankets and duvet cover.

     If you start to feel slightly overheated during the night, try stick one or both feet out from under the covers. Because we’re mammals, the palms of our hands and feet help regulate our core body temperature. Think of them as nature’s thermostats.

    The first morning I woke up in my Andong den to find none of the comforts of home, I went out for a walk around the neighborhood. I tried four or five dabangs, the Korean word for a kind of Coffee Shop, in search of a cup, but they were all closed. Coffee seems to be more associated with night life, here, than with waking up in the morning. Finally, I tried the door of one and it opened, but there was no one around. I called out, “Anyang aseo?” and a voice answered from the back. Soon a forty-something woman appeared, frizzy haired and sleepy eyed. She led me to a booth and gave me a remote for the TV perched high on a shelf across the room. While she prepared my coffee and fixed her hair, I started channel surfing and was thrilled to find the BBC International news.I went back yesterday at the same time to catch the news, but it was raining like crazy this morning, so I remained ignorant of the state of the world. Returning this evening, I waited fifteen minutes before anyone came to take my order. A man walked passed me soon after I entered, but must not have told the party of staff apparently, going on in the back, about the foreigner who was sitting in the front. I still have not seen a customer in the place other than myself. My ajuma, as she calls herself, finally arrived. She is always very nice and gave me a little bag of peanuts to take as a present when I left this evening. She speaks absolutely no English, but keeps trying to communicate in Korean. My survival Korean from two years ago is coming back, but we still can’t have much of a conversation. I did manage to find out, though, that they don’t serve food or drinks other than coffee and tea. Every now and then my ajuma launches a sneak attack to pinch the hair on my arm, and then giggles like a school girl. The term “ajuma” refers to a class of serving women, and I believe traditionally to married women. It has a kind of derogatory connotation and is often pronounced with a faintly sneering tone of voice

    He’s Grounded! Delta Bans Obnoxious Trump Supporter For Life

    Delta Air Lines has placed a lifelong ban on the Donald Trump supporter who was filmed before takeoff on a Nov. 22 flight harassing passengers who voted for Hillary Clinton, Delta CEO Ed Bastian announced Monday in an internal memo.

    The passenger, described in the memo as “loud, rude and disrespectful,” shouted belligerently and called out “Hillary bitches” soon after boarding the flight from Atlanta, Georgia, to Allentown, Pennsylvania. 

    Bastian said flight attendants made “the best decision they could given the information they had” by allowing the man to remain on the flight, but he admitted the airline made a mistake.

    “If our colleagues had witnessed firsthand what was shown in the video, there is no question they would have removed him from the aircraft,” Bastian wrote.

    The CEO told employees that Delta has issued refunds to all the passengers on the flight and that the decision to ban the passenger came after Delta received a wave of criticism for not kicking the man off at the time of the incident.

    Many people commented on the company’s Facebook page, pointing out the hypocrisy of airlines who boot Muslim passengers from flights for doing virtually nothing wrong while letting disruptive white passengers, like the man on the flight to Allentown, slide.

    In a video that went viral last week, the passenger can be seen in the aisle of the airplane cheering for President-elect Trump and insulting Clinton supporters.

    “We got some Hillary bitches on here?” the man yells to the passengers. “Donald Trump, baby!” he says later in the video. “It’s y’all president. Every goddamn one of you. If you don’t like it, too bad.”

    Emma Baum, who sat next to the loud Trump supporter, said she first noticed the man chanting “Make America great again” outside of the airport terminal before boarding, The Morning Call newspaper in Allentown reported.

    The passenger continued to talk about Trump when they were seated on the plane, so Baum filmed his rant and posted it to Facebook. The video has been watched more than 2.4 million times and shared nearly 19,000 times in less than a week.

    Love Actually: Don’t Fast Forward To The Happy Ending

    One of the many characters in Love Actually is a widower named Daniel (Liam Neeson.) While delivering his wife Joanne’s eulogy, he gives us a hint at her sense of humor:

    “Jo and I had uh, a lot of time to prepare for this moment. Some of her, uh, requests – for instance, that I should bring Claudia Schiffer as my date to the funeral – I was confident she expected me to ignore.”

    In a scene shortly following the funeral, Daniel cries in front of his married friend Karen (Emma Thompson.) Karen responds be telling him:

    “Get a grip, people hate sissies. No-one’s ever gonna shag you if you cry all the time.”

    In the movie, that bit of dialogue is not meant to paint Karen as being a bad friend. Rather, this is how the movie actually sees the world: Only wimps have emotions, real men don’t cry, and it’s a widower’s JOB to get laid.

    And sure enough, by the end of the movie, the widower is successfully flirting with (and beginning a relationship with) Carol, a women who happens to look a lot like Claudia Schiffer (perhaps because she’s being played by Claudia Schiffer.) The timeline between the widower burying his wife and hitting it off with a supermodel? Five weeks.

    Five weeks. That’s the timeline movies like Love Actually have for grief. After that, it’s time to give the audience what they really want, namely the excitement of seeing a “boy meets girl” moment. Joanne, who is never even seen alive during the movie, was only written into existence to set up a surprise romance. It’s suggested that Joanne suffered through a long illness, but her real cause of death was narrative efficiency.

    There is a shocking amount of pressure placed on real-life widows and widowers to “get back out there.” People will actually start talking to the bereaved about dating as early as the funeral. Love Actually, The Holiday, and other movies that use an off-screen dead spouse to help set up an eventual “meet cute” romantic-comedy moment are only contributing to the problem.

    People’s lives do not follow narrative arcs. When you or somebody you know faces a personal loss, respect that loss for what it is. Let it be a self-contained terrible moment in time, not a mere set up for something wonderful that you want to believe is just around the corner. Don’t try to fast forward to the happy ending.

    In A Stunning Development, Congress Drops A Billion Dollars On The Heroin Crisis

    WASHINGTON ― Congress is close to passing a bill, after several thwarted attempts, that would include a provision allocating $ 1 billion to address the opioid epidemic.

    But that effort could still be upended by last-minute concerns that the broader legislation is too much of a giveaway to the pharmaceutical and medical device industries.

    House and Senate Republicans agreed over the weekend on a final version of the 21st Century Cures Act, one of the last bills on the table before the new Congress is sworn in this January.

    Three years in the making, 21st Century Cures is designed as a broad investment in medical research and development at the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, coupled with the loosening of bureaucratic red tape and regulatory restrictions. Its authors have tinkered with the sources of funding and the language of the legislation. And, in the process, they’ve encouraged lawmakers to offer their support by adding specific, popular provisions to the final product. 

    One of those provisions was funding to tackle the opioid epidemic, a development that seemed unlikely to transpire as recently as several months ago.

    Deaths from opioid overdoses have continued to rise in many communities across the country, and existing treatment systems are outdated and ill-equipped to address the influx, making the need to address the crisis a political imperative. Over the summer, President Barack Obama had signed the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act into law, a bipartisan bill that contained several hopeful developments, such as expanding access to medication-assisted treatments — but included essentially no funding to implement the proposals.

    So earlier this month, Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Ed Markey (D-Mass.) began a push to include opioid-related funding in the 21st Century Cures legislation, reminding lawmakers that Congress has yet to help states contain the growing crisis. Last week, they were joined by Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) and Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) in writing a letter urging Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to take action.

    “As the end of the year fast approaches, it is past time for Republicans and Democrats to come together to provide emergency funding and increase investments in prevention and treatment services for opioid use, misuse, and use disorders,” the letter read. “Until we do, our job is not done and our communities will continue to hurt.”

    But while the opioid funding has helped draw Democrats to support 21st Century Cures, other provisions, including the removal of a mandatory funding stream for medical research investments, have driven some lawmakers away. 

    Among the bill’s major opponents is Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who on Monday announced that she will not vote for the bill, despite supporting much of its content, because it has been one of the most heavily lobbied health care bills.

    Warren said Senate Republicans “let Big Pharma hijack the Cures bill” and accused them of “trying to buy off Democratic votes one by one by tacking on good bipartisan proposals that senators in both parties have worked on in good faith for years.”

    “This final deal has only a tiny fig leaf of funding for NIH and for the opioid crisis,” she said on the Senate floor. “And most of that fig leaf isn’t even real. Most of the money won’t be there, unless future Congresses pass future bills in future years to fund those dollars. So why bother with a fig leaf in the Cures bill? Why pretend to give money to NIH or opioids? Because this funding is political cover for huge giveaways to giant drug companies.”

    The House is expected to vote on the 21st Century Cures Act on Wednesday, and the Senate will consider it next week.

    Donald Trump’s most recent claim purports that he won the popular vote if you “deduct the millions of people who voted illegally.”

    This bombastic claim runs contrary to the evidence amassed this election cycle. The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law leads the nation’s largest non-partisan voter protection program. We received calls and complaints from voters across the country. Here is a snapshot of what we actually saw this election cycle.

    Pennsylvania adopted a strict voter ID law that was found to violate the state’s constitution by “imposing an unreasonable burden on the right to vote”, and was struck down in 2014. Nonetheless, that did not stop poll officials from requiring that voters present id in polling sites across the state’s five most populous counties of Philadelphia, Allegheny, Montgomery, Bucks, and Delaware, as well as in Berks County, Chester County, Dauphin County, Erie County, Lancaster County, and Luzerne Counties.

    Officials across Texas in Denton, Tarrant, Grimes, Harris, Medina and Montgomery Counties continued to seek photo id from voters despite an en banc ruling from the Fifth Circuit that found that the state’s photo id law had a discriminatory effect on the state’s Black and Latino voters. In Bexar County, a temporary restraining order was issued mandating that officials remove all illegal voter ID signs and correct its website and hotline with the updated voter ID rules.

    In Durham, North Carolina, e-poll books failed on the morning of the election. Voters were told to leave and return once the problem was corrected. That afternoon a court order was secured that extended poll hours at several impacted polling sites. It is unclear how many voters learned about the extension and were provided a fair opportunity to cast their ballots.

    In Wisconsin, a strict photo id law, the subject of long and protracted litigation, resulted in depressed voter turnout rates across the state. The impact was starkest in Milwaukee where voter turnout rates dropped by 51,000 between 2012 and 2016. Milwaukee’s election chief attributed the low turnout and problems at the polls to the state’s restrictive voter ID law. In commenting on the law this summer, a federal judge found that “preoccupation with mostly phantom election fraud leads to real incidents of disenfranchisement.”

    Student voters were not immune. Poll workers in Erie County, Pennsylvania home to at least seven higher education institutions, unlawfully turned away scores of college students who presented their student photo ID to vote. College students in Boca Raton, Florida were turned away after election officials told them their Florida Atlantic University address was considered “a hotel” and not a residence.

    Misinformation regarding the date and location for voting spread extensively online. In some places, misinformation was sent by mail including in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where voters received a letter stating that Tuscaloosa Republicans will vote for president on Tuesday, and Tuscaloosa Democrats will vote on Wednesday.

    Arizona is an open-carry weapon state. Voters in Maricopa and Pima Counties reported visibly armed individuals standing near the exits or entrances of polling places attempting to interact with voters.

    And we also received complaints from some of the 6 million people in our country who are disenfranchised as a result of a criminal history- people who are citizens and unable to vote because of a conviction in their past.

    There is one central point about the 2016 presidential election that can’t be ignored- voter suppression had an impact. The most intense voter suppression efforts can be traced to a 2013 ruling issued by the U.S. Supreme Court that gut a core provision of the Voting Rights Act. Since the day the ruling was issued in Shelby County, Alabama v. Holder, states have unleashed a seemingly-coordinated campaign to make voting more difficult. Those efforts bore fruit during the 2016 presidential election cycle.

    Voter suppression tactics come packaged in different forms but there is usually one single justification put forth by suppression proponents. They claim these restrictions are needed to prevent voter fraud and that there are “millions of people illegally voting.” When pressed to provide the proof, they are unable to offer any because vote fraud simply does not exist.

    Once we move beyond the myth of vote fraud, greater focus must be placed on the reality of voter suppression that threatens the integrity of American democracy.

    8 Habits of Considerate People

    Philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer once said, “Politeness is to human nature what warmth is to wax.” It’s true. Being kind and considerate softens people and makes them malleable to your way of thinking.

    But I see another meaning there, too. I think he’s also saying that being considerate of others is an integral part of what it means to be human. Charles Darwin would have agreed. He argued that our instinct to be considerate is even stronger than our instinct to be self-serving.

    As obvious as that may seem, it’s only recently that neuroscience has been able to explain why. Research conducted by Dacher Keltner at Berkeley showed that our brains react exactly the same when we see other people in pain as when we experience pain ourselves. Watching someone else experience pain also activates the structure deep inside the brain that’s responsible for nurturing behavior, called the periaqueductal gray.

    Being considerate of others is certainly a good career move, but it’s also good for your health. When you show consideration for others, the brain’s reward center is triggered, which elevates the feel-good chemicals dopamine, oxytocin, and endogenous opioids. This gives you a great feeling, which is similar to what’s known as “runner’s high,” and all that oxytocin is good for your heart.

    That’s all well and good, but how practical is it? How do you become more considerate when you have so many other things competing for your finite mental energy? It’s not that hard–all you have to do is emulate the habits of highly considerate people.

    1. Show up on time. Sure, sometimes things happen, but always showing up late sends a very clear message that you think your time is more important than everyone else’s, and that’s just rude. Even if you really do think that your time is more important, you don’t have to broadcast that belief to the world. Instead, be considerate and show up when you said you would.

    2. Be deliberately empathic. It’s one thing to feel empathy for other people, but putting that feeling into action is another matter entirely. It’s great to be able to put yourself in someone else’s shoes–in fact, it’s essential–but that doesn’t necessarily translate into being considerate. To be deliberately empathic, you have to let your ability to walk in their shoes change what you do, whether that’s changing your behavior to accommodate their feelings or providing tangible help in a tough situation. This requires emotional intelligence.

    3. Apologize when you need to (and don’t when you don’t).
    We all know people who are so insecure or so afraid of offending someone that they practically apologize for breathing. In such situations, apologizing loses its meaning. But it’s a different matter entirely when a sincere apology is really necessary. When you’ve made a mistake, or even think you’ve made a mistake, apologizing is a crucial part of being considerate.

    4. Smile a lot. Physically, it’s easier to frown than to smile–smiling involves 42 different muscles; however, it pays to make the extra effort, as smiling has a huge effect on other people. People naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person they’re talking to. When you smile at people, they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good as a result.

    5. Mind your manners. A lot of people have come to believe that not only are manners unnecessary, they’re undesirable because they’re fake. These people think that being polite means you’re acting in a way that doesn’t reflect how you actually feel, but they’ve got it backwards. “Minding your manners” is all about focusing on how the other person feels, not on how you feel. It’s consciously acting in a way that puts other people at ease and makes them feel comfortable.

    6. Be emotionally intelligent. One of the huge fallacies our culture has embraced is that feeling something is the same as acting on that feeling, and that’s just wrong, because there’s this little thing called self-control. Whether it’s helping out a co-worker when you’re in a crunch to meet your own deadline or continuing to be pleasant with someone who is failing to return the favor, being considerate often means not acting on what you feel.

    7. Try to find a way for everybody to win. Many people approach life as a zero-sum game. They think that somebody has to win and somebody else has to lose. Considerate people, on the other hand, try to find a way for everybody to win. That’s not always possible, but it’s their goal. If you want to be more considerate, stop thinking of every interaction with others as a win/lose scenario.

    8. Act on your intuition when it comes to other people’s needs.
    Sometimes you can just tell when someone is upset or having a bad day. In such cases, being considerate means checking in with them to see if your intuition is correct. If your intuition is telling you to reach out–do it; they’ll appreciate your concern.

    Bringing It All Together

    Being considerate is good for your mental and physical health, your career, and everyone around you. On top of that, it just feels good.

    If you’ve ever looked at celebrities in the media and thought to yourself; “does she really look like that? Is he that perfect?” The answer to these and other questions like this; highly doubtful. I think it started back as early as the 40’s and 50’s the onset of the “glamour” days in Hollywood. The “looks” of the media stars seem to set the tone and the quest for the flawless. Sometimes even when a healthy weight is achieved there are still parts of our bodies that in our thoughts don’t quite meet a level of beauty that the media and the fitness industry somehow has convinced us that we need to reach. As technology continues to develop so has the ability to enhance looks of perfection. In reality these folks you see in the media are just like you and me. Airbrushing, great lighting, make-up, photo shopping, injections, plastic surgery, extreme dieting prior to a movie, TV or photo shoot and other techniques are all used to create these illusions. Extreme measures many times are taken to create “the look.” This is the “glamour machine” in action. Then most likely, after the production or photo shoot because they’re human just like you and me it’s beer and pizza and or whatever the individual preference of indulgence may be.

    That said, let’s talk about your body image and how this image has a huge impact on your self image. I mention the above because this concept tends to drive our thoughts, inner dialogue and self perception. These images often create unachievable expectations and sometimes can cause one to say; “why even bother?” The tendency is not to acknowledge your own individual progress or personal best because it’s not perfection. It’s important to shift the focus towards your individual goals and needs and what you can accomplish. And shift away from what is presented by the Hollywood glamour machine, the cover of the fitness magazine at the newstand or that skinny person down the street who can eat everything in site and not gain a pound. Own the fact that you are a unique being. Achieve your own personal best and not someone else’s. Your goals are real and valid. Own your own unique gifts and lead with these gifts; these talents. Be that electric person in the room who just knows who you are, is grounded and passionate about what you bring to this life. Think about it; there’s nothing more attractive than that. You’re not a failure or a bad person (self image) because you’ve gained a few pounds. (body image) The fitness industry contributes to this as well. This focus on external body perfection has always been a peeve I have with the business and I continue to work hard to shift this focus. The emphasis tends to be on the external while ignoring internal benefits and a return to health. Not that we all don’t want to look our best…that’s a huge benefit of taking great care of ourselves. However, getting optimum numbers on our yearly physicals, quality longevity, exuding a healthy glow, having mobility to play with our kids and grandkids, climb stairs, being able to mow the lawn, shovel the snow or haul the groceries in at night needs more attention. Obesity with adults and kids and healthcare costs in America are all dramatically rising every year.     So what is body image? It’s a reaction you have within in response to what you see in the mirror or a picture. This encompasses the perceptions and things you tell yourself about how you feel about your body. You’re too fat, too thin, ugly, old, bloated and tired, average, amazing, fit, beautiful or whatever you tell yourself based on what you see. This is your body image. Self image is how we feel about ourselves as people, as human beings. It’s who you are as a person from the soul; self esteem. If you’re a good giving and caring person, a good parent, a great friend or sibling. Body image and self image for most everyone go hand in hand. You may have great body image but a poor self image; poor self esteem. Or you may have the opposite. Ultimately you want a healthy and positive image of both. If you’ve looked in the mirror and punished yourself for what you see based on the fact that you’ve let your health go and gained weight you get what I’m talking about here. Because you’ve let yourself go (body image) …now you’ve deemed yourself as a total failure in life. (self image) The fat on your hips and thighs, your flabby midsection, the chubby arms…these are not who you are. (body image) And because you may have let yourself go for whatever reason, you’re still the same loving giving person that you’ve always been. (self image) Your friends, family and loved ones around you know and embrace this as well. I’ve said before that being overweight for the most part is always the result of something much bigger; an injury that caused you to become inactive, a traumatic event, your need to be protected by the fat suit, depression, loss, a bad relationship or any other reason in life that took you in the wrong direction health wise. These events and the current result of being overweight again are not who you are. No need to punish yourself. And newsflash; If you’re overweight you have the power within you to do something about it.

    Your body image now may not be so much that you hate yourself and where you are now. But more a feeling of disappointment that you’ve not kept the standards that you really do have for yourself. You’ve let yourself go. Truth is if these standards didn’t exist in you, your poor body image due to being fat and out of shape wouldn’t bother you at all. You’d be fat, bloated, happy and loving life. Tap your resources and put this in motion. Raise your standards, alter your perspective and move forward one step at a time but continue the move forward. Focus on your goals, your passions, your inner goodness and not the illusion of the media machine.

    Avoid a “diet” as these are temporary plans that yield temporary results. If you’re not going to commit to a level that you can commit to or do it right you’re better off to stay overweight until you decide that you’re ready to do it. Then make the changes necessary to embrace a lifestyle that will get you to your goal weight and keep you there. Ultimately you to learn what I call the “skill of weight control.” Determine a weight that you realistically can attain and sustain and work with that. And this perspective will continue to have ebbs and flows. That’s okay. Just stay conscious and real about what you are willing to do.

    It’s keeping standards high for the choices you make on a daily basis. Heck yes you’ll look good…absolutely! Enjoy and flaunt this great pay-off. But go even deeper on this for yourself, your health and how you’ll feel. Your energy levels will soar and there is so much out there in life that awaits you. At your physical the doctor hands you tremendous results. If you have kids, nieces or nephews you’re going to turn around one day and they’ll have kids. You want to begin now to enjoy these times later. And yes; you’ll be able to wear those benchmark jeans! Don’t wait for tragedy to wake you up forcing you to play catch up. Get off the couch and take action now. You don’t have to be perfect just be you. “Acknowledge all progress” as I say. You’ll feel better and who doesn’t want that? Love your body and who you are. Get in the game and enjoy the journey!
