‘Virtually Every Alt-Right Nazi I Know Is Volunteering For The Trump Campaign’

It seems Donald Trump has united one group of voters: Neo-Nazis.

“Trump had me at ‘build a wall,’” Andrew Anglin, editor of the white supremacist website Daily Stormer, told the Los Angeles Times. “Virtually every alt-right Nazi I know is volunteering for the Trump campaign.”

The comments confirm reports from throughout the campaign season that white supremacists were mobilizing for the Republican presidential candidate and excited by his platform. Trump has picked up endorsements from leaders and publications in the neo-Nazi movement since early in his candidacy. Some members of the movement have even made robocalls on his behalf.

Although Trump has disavowed their support, he hasn’t always done so quickly. He’s also retweeted white supremacists and shared neo-Nazi memes

It’s been concerning that [Donald Trump] hasn’t spoken out forcefully against these people,” Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO and national director of the Anti-Defamation League, told The Hill over the summer. “It is outrageous to think that the candidate is sourcing material from some of the worst elements in our society.”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Constructive Anger

The following excerpt about constructive anger is taken from the book of dialogue between the Dalai Lama and myself, entitled Emotional Awareness (2009). Having just reread it, I found nothing to change; I still believe it raises the right question, makes a useful suggestion and offers a practice to learn it. It is only when life itself is threatened (our own or that of others) that we might need to focus on the actor rather than the action. Fortunately, that is a rare occurrence in the lives of most of us.

2016-09-29-1475190990-4073711-ScreenShot20160920at10.32.58AM.png

“Constructive Anger” Excerpt from Emotional Awareness, pp. 124-5

Ekman: I think [there is] a crucial issue for how people are educated about the way in which they can experience anger in a constructive fashion. You cannot get rid of anger, but you can learn how to use it in a way that is good for you. And the way that is good for you is not to hurt the other person. That almost always backfires. Unless you eliminate him or her, the person will come back and hurt you.

Dalai Lama: (Translated.) There is a famous story in the Buddhist texts about a Bodhisattva (in Mahayana Buddhism, this is known as a person who is able to reach nirvana but delays doing so out of compassion in order to save suffering beings*). This story seems to suggest an interesting take on the question, How can there be a compassion-motivated anger? The story is there is a Bodhisattva who is traveling on a boat. There is also a mass murderer on the boat and the Bodhisattva finds out that this person is going to kill all the other passengers. After failing to persuade the potential murderer to desist from what he is planning to do, he kills the mass murderer. The idea is that the Bodhisattva has full compassion for this potential murderer, but at the same time total disapproval of the act that he was about to commit. He has compassion for the mass murderer but anger against the act he is about to perform.

Ekman: In the 2000 conference, a group of us met one night to plan the research project to respond to your challenge, “Is this going to be just talk, good karma, or is something going to happen?” There were about six of us sitting around, beginning to plan. One of the participants kept raising obstacles: “You should not do this,” “you are reinventing the wheel,” and “why do you think you need to do this?” Mark Greenberg showed a beautiful example of constructive anger, because this person was putting an obstacle in our way. Mark said, “We really want to proceed, and if you want to participate, then we welcome you here. But if you do not want to participate, you should not stay in this meeting. You should let us do what we want to do.” He said it with strength. I asked him afterward, “Were you angry” and he said, “Yes.” But it was a very constructive anger. There was no element of trying to harm. He did not say, “Why do you think you know more than we know?” That would be harmful, right? Mark’s anger was totally focused on the action, removing the obstacle. Focusing anger on the objectionable action, not the actor, appears also in the writings of an emotion theorist, the late Richard Lazarus, who was a professor at the University of California at Berkeley, in exactly the same terms. What is needed, I think, is to give people practice in doing it. You could start with a situation in which anger was directed at the actor, and ask how you could instead direct the anger at the act. But that does not have as much life and vitality. We need exercises for developing this skill. When I anticipate that I will need to discuss an issue with my wife about which there might be some conflict, ahead of time I plan in my mind how I am going to deal with it. I actually go through a rehearsal in my mind: how I will direct my disagreement only at the act and be careful not to criticize her. I do not let her know that that is what I am doing. I have found it to be useful, and often successful, in finding a solution to our disagreement. You have to practice focusing on the act that is causing difficulty, not the actor; you cannot just think about it. This practice is based on a realization of our interdependence, but it is a practice, in my example, rehearsed in the mind.

I am a Hypochondriac

I am in a perpetual abusive relationship with hypochondria; I desperately want to get away from it, but somehow it controls my brain.

I’ve had hypochondriac tendencies (more officially known as “illness anxiety disorder“) for as long as I can remember. I’m not sure who or what to blame and the source of the disorder is irrelevant; it’s the cure I’m after.

Hypothesis theories for my hypochondria:

  • Throughout my childhood, my mother perpetually complained of a bad heart and threatened to faint, falling back on her stash of smelling salts in her purse.
  • The best birthday present I ever got was the Merck Medical Manual, which I read cover to cover like a gripping mystery novel.
  • The internet. Type in a symptom and it’ll provide evidence to substantiate any cancer diagnosis – or MS or blood clot or an aneurysm de jour.
  • The tragic stories which make you feel powerless and helpless. The healthy marathon runner who never smoked a day in his life with no family history and plagued with lung cancer.

Has your foot ever fallen asleep? How about just your pinky toe? How long will you let your pinky toe feel numb before googling it? Or will you even notice at all? I’m perpetually amazed at how we exist in a world where people could carry a pregnancy unknowingly alongside people like me who notice a pin-prick size bite or a new freckle emerge among millions. I swear to feel my egg drop each month and I promise I can feel it traveling down my fallopian tube. I’m not claiming it’s painful; I’m simply acknowledging I feel it and I am hyper aware of it. This hypersensitivity is called body vigilance. It means I feel any little thing even if it’s just my body being alive, and I take it to the extreme.

My brain engages in a civil war: the FEAR team versus the LOGIC team. Even though my LOGIC team is armed with more data than my FEAR team, the latter plays dirty by shooting out the deadly ‘what if’ arrows into the ring, completely leveling the field. For every logical comment, my brain uses to assuage the fear, the ‘what-if’s’ throw something in to make me doubt myself. What if JUST THIS TIME it is a heart attack? What if JUST THIS TIME it is a blood clot in my lungs? What if JUST THIS TIME that little lip twitch is an early indicator of Multiple Sclerosis? Or Muscular Dystrophy? (I always confused them, but am terrified of both equally.)

Keep in mind, I am a smart, educated person who understands, appreciates and is fascinated by biology (my favorite science). When my grandfather was diagnosed with throat cancer, I scoured the Internet for everything there was to know about the disease, the treatment, and the recovery. When my grandmother was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm, she asked how long it had been there and they told her they had no idea; probably years. She said, “If I’ve been walking around with it for years, I’ll continue to walk around with it.” I am not that person. I would think of nothing other than that growing blood clot pushing on my brain. I would not sleep because I would be sure it would pop in my sleep or when I coughed or screamed or yelled.

For years, I thought the momentary sharp pain I got “under my breast” was a heart attack warning. I thought back to my mother grabbing her chest and yelling out in Russian, “koleet,” which translates to “it’s piercing.” She’d gasp for breath and occasionally ask for the smelling salts but the pain was always gone soon after with no real repercussion or follow up. She never went to a cardiologist but told me the story about how she had scarlet fever as a child and it has lasting effects on her heart. She had us all convinced she had a bad heart, but now I realize she just had gas. She also spewed the rhetoric how her “B” blood type, was a lower caliber blood, secondary to “A” blood type. “I have the weaker blood type,” she would tell me, “not like your father. Thank goodness you have A positive like him.” Turns out we actually both have O positive.

When I take things to the extreme, I know I’m trying to gain control because ultimately FEAR is controlling my hypochondriac symptoms. Somehow my brain believes if I discover it early enough; if I prepare well enough; if I get to the hospital fast enough, I’ll save myself. My preparedness is fruitless; I am a samurai meditating on my death.

The older I get, the worse it is. I’ve spent so many years worrying about these possible horrific diseases without getting them, I’m sure my time is coming. Why else has life been preparing me for all these diseases? I wait and wait, wasting all my time fearing when I could have been grateful for every day without pain. I could be appreciating every day that I am not aware of something secretly growing inside me. The fear can be paralyzing; it’s dangerous in the world with terrible texting drivers and drunk people at a concert who might trample me and ticking bombs in random dumpsters, but fear is just a self-induced terrorist which will imprison you with limitations.

A therapist tried to help me with my brain’s propensity to rapidly accelerate towards the worst case scenario regarding health issues but it’s a hard program to overwrite. She tried to teach me if I find a small lump on my arm, for instance, I shouldn’t instantly google “arm cancer,” and instead just be aware of it and monitor it for a few days to see if perhaps it was just a mosquito bite and will go away. Her goal was to modify my behavior to delay the panic release.

Over time, I’ve learned that I have to understand the difference between pain and sensation. Awareness does not necessarily indicate a symptom of something else, it is a reminder my heart is beating and I am breathing. I’m also not the type of hypochondriac who incessantly visits the doctor; I’m too afraid they will find something and also, I don’t trust them. Today’s doctors’ first order of business is a prescription for Klonopin to try to quiet my overactive mind.

Therapists often get hung up on analysis to decipher the root of the disorder, but I’m often frustrated because I want a solution, or at least a better coping method than writing (192,733 words to date and still not cured).

Did you hear that wheeze when I inhaled deeply? Or am I not inhaling deeply enough? Is my lung capacity giving me enough air? Can I make the wheeze happen again? Of course not! It’s like bringing the car to the mechanic and then it doesn’t make the noise. Don’t you hear that deep wheeze? Is that stage 4 lung cancer?

I feel like a floating molecule through space waiting to be struck by something. I walk through life avoiding the diseases like walking between the raindrops.

Trevor Noah Blasts Donald Trump’s Fat-Shaming Of Miss Universe

When it comes to fat-shaming women, Trevor Noah says Donald Trump just can’t help himself.

On Wednesday’s “The Daily Show,” Noah focused on how Trump continued bringing up former Miss Universe Alicia Machado to the media, one day after Hillary Clinton used Machado’s story during the presidential debate to illustrate Trump’s misogyny.

Noah then showed a clip of Trump telling the stars of “Fox And Friends” that Machado was “not exactly Mother Teresa.”

Noah then imitated Trump: “This woman was no Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa was a size zero.”

Noah then put the interview into perspective.

“You know you’re going too far when the Fox News staff is cringing at your treatment of women.”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

A Marathon, A Heart Attack And A Comeback.

Ericka grew up in southern Vermont. She was a year younger than me and a class behind me in school. She had a contagious grin, played field hockey and ended up at many of the same outdoor “bon fires” that I did. High school is a time of fuzzy memories, flashes of lots of people crammed into a car listening to Dire Straits, late night runs to Friendly’s for ridiculously large hot fudge sundaes, laughter and just a general sense of togetherness. Looking back I don’t think I ever had more than a 10 min conversation with Ericka which was completely normal for high school.

In November of 2009, Ericka collapsed and her heart stopped at mile 23 of the Philadelphia Marathon. Her story and road back are remarkable and have made a deep impression on me. It was while I was out visiting a friend in Denver several years ago that Ericka’s story was passed on to me. I am passing it on now in hopes that it inspires and motivates someone else.

Ericka discovered a love for running in her 20’s during a marriage that needed to end. She would strap on her headphones and head for the trails where she could clear her head. She started running further and faster and decided to sign up for her first 5K. From then on she was hooked. She trained her way up and through a 10K, Half Marathon and then Marathon. She ran the New York Marathon and several others and then qualified for the Boston Marathon. Ericka ran with her dad in several of the marathon’s. Her father was a doctor and also an avid runner.

The Philadelphia marathon was to be a big family affair and her father, older brother, mother and several other family members were taking in the train in to be on the sidelines. Ericka recounts the night before as being full of laughter, carbs and anticipation.
Her last memory of race day was of posing for a family photo in the lobby of the hotel at 6:30 in the morning. Her family was lined up near the end of the course, waiting for her to run by. They knew her average times and when ten min went by with no sight of her, they began to worry. At 30 min, Ericka’s mother was frantic.

Around mile 23, Ericka pitched forward suddenly and fell to the ground, hitting her head. Witnesses recount that she did not appear to try and brace her fall with her hands. At that exact same moment a nurse named Mary Kay Silverman was running by Ericka in the opposite direction. The marathon course is set up so that the runners essentially run in a loop. The front runners are heading back to the finish line while many other runners are still heading out to the midpoint where they will turn around. The course diverges from mile 17 to 21, away from the runners heading to the finish line. Had Ericka collapsed even two minutes earlier, Mary Kay would have been on a different path and not even within eye sight of her.

At first people thought that Ericka had fainted but Mary Kay knew it was cardiac related and immediately set to work to keep her blood circulating. She began CPR. The second amazing piece of this story is that Ericka fell only a few yards from one of the official medic tents, staffed with EMT’s, on the course. There were three total tents/stations along the route, the other two were at the beginning and midpoint of the race. The fact that the EMT’s were able to reach Ericka within three minutes of her collapse and shock her heart back into rhythm undoubtedly saved her life. She was transferred immediately to Hahnemann University Hospital. Once there, Ericka was put into an induced coma while doctors began to lower her body temperature in order to try and prevent swelling and brain damage. Four days later on Wednesday, Ericka woke up. Her first vision was of many faces peering down at her. One can only imagine the complete disorientation and confusion she felt. Ericka was told briefly that she had been in an accident. She went back to sleep for another 24 hours. These are all the facts, but facts don’t convey the whole story.

Inside those four days, Ericka’s family lived hour by hour. Her big brother moved a cot into her hospital room and slept there every night by her side. Her mother, could barely stand to see her shivering, as she knew that Ericka hated to be cold. She had to stop herself from putting blankets over Ericka and trying to warm her up. The family held a constant around the clock vigil.
After Ericka woke up, her mother recounted that her brain was moving very slowly. Ericka asked for her cell phone on Thursday and took about a half hour to type a two line text message. Someone could have typed it for her but she insisted on doing it herself.

The diagnosis was a congenital heart defect. It had been there since birth. It could have failed her at any time during those other five marathons, but she never felt dizziness, chest pressure or labored breathing. In the weeks that followed Ericka grew well enough to leave the hospital in PA and return home to MA. Her father helped to find one of the top doctors in congenital heart surgery and her corrective “open heart” procedure was scheduled for the beginning of February at Mass General Hospital.

Those five weeks of waiting were among the hardest weeks of Ericka’s life. She was essentially on modified bed rest at home. She could not go to work but worst of all, for someone who is a top athlete and long distance runner, she could not exercise. She felt fine and grew frustrated with the long days and time at home.

The day of the surgery arrived and Ericka was terrified. Thoughts raced through her mind; maybe she had been saved by mistake and now she would not survive this surgery. She was sedated and then put under anesthesia and placed on a Heart/ Lung bypass machine. Ericka’s chest was opened up and the five hour long surgery began. It went off without a hitch and her heart was responding perfectly. The recovery began again in earnest.

As she began to heal physically, Ericka began to wrestle with the reality of what her life might be like going forward. She was 38 years old and the surgery had been a success but her cardiac doctor remained cautious and steadfast in his warning to her that she should not run again. So much of her self-identity was wrapped up in being a runner. She had the surgery with the hope that it would allow her to live a normal, active life. All of her cardiac stress tests came back beautifully, heart fully functioning and pumping blood perfectly.

Ericka was at a fork in the road. She could have accepted the doctor’s medical advice that she should not run again, or she could seek a second opinion. Ericka’s dad understood what running meant to her. He consulted other doctors around New England and found a specialist at Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital who would re-evaluate Ericka. She had more stress tests, again they looked great. The new doctor agreed to clear Ericka for running, only no marathons. She was given instructions on how to monitor her heart rate, run with a heart monitor and was placed on a Beta Blocker. It was summer of 2011 when Ericka received this news by phone that she could run again. She took several weeks to let it sink in.

Her family was on vacation a few weeks later and during a lull in the activity, her father quietly pulled her aside and asked if she wanted to take a few spins around the track nearby. They went together and ran side by side slowly. And it was hard. It did not feel good. It felt like she was running up hill and she was hyper aware of every beat her heart was making. They ran for ten minutes that day. In the weeks and months that followed, Ericka began to build her strength and endurance back up slowly. She ran only indoors, on a treadmill and in a gym that had a defibrillator. She gradually increased her mileage. She entered a 5K and then a few more.

Ericka’s biggest triumph was the completion of the Disney Orlando half marathon in October three years ago. She ran the race with Mary Kay Silverman by her side. The two have become very close. I was able to reach MaryKay Silverman just this week as I was editing this article. I asked her how that day in 2009 had impacted her life. Mary Kay relayed that although she was an RN and the Director of Emergency Services at Hahnemann Hospital it was much more nerve racking to be doing CPR outside of a hospital, on the ground and with no one else around for backup. She said the EMT’s arrived in only a few minutes but those minutes felt much longer at the time. Once they did arrive and take over, amazingly, MaryKay got up and rejoined the marathon, officially finishing the race. She hardly remembers those last 3.2 miles but felt it was important for her to try and finish.

When MaryKay got to work the next day at the hospital she called up to the ICU and asked if a woman in her 30’s had been brought in in cardiac arrest, fearing Ericka had not survived. She remembers feeling so grateful to hear that Ericka was alive and that they were keeping her on the cooling protocol and monitoring her brain for swelling. When Ericka did wake up, she and her family were told that the nurse who had saved her life, actually worked there in the hospital and Ericka asked if she could meet her. MaryKay described this reunion as emotional for everyone. In all the years she has worked as a nurse this experience impacted her more than any other. She kept in touch with Ericka while Ericka was waiting for her heart surgery and in the months afterward kept checking in by email and phone. When Ericka was fully recovered she went to spend a weekend with MaryKay. They talked for hours and discovered that they had so much in common. In the seven years since that fateful day, Ericka and MaryKay have become fast friends.

On a personal note Ericka, has inspired me to start running. The image of Ericka and her dad running around the track the first day back and how hard it must have been mentally and physically stayed with me. When I felt like I could not get enough air in my lungs during runs or became frustrated with my slow progress, I thought of her and I kept going. 6 months later I trained for my first 5k. Today I run four times a week and I am training for a 10k.

In the years since her collapse Ericka has gone on to make the world a better place. She has established a yearly 12 days of giving tradition where she chooses a different charity for twelve days and posts links and information on her social media, raising awareness and asking people to donate if they can. She is one person but she has inspired so many.

People may read this story and wonder if Ericka is taking undue risk. I see a woman who is choosing to live life on her own terms. None of us know how long we have and most of us forget to live each day to the fullest. If you are reading this story and fighting your way back from something, I hope that it will inspire you too. Ericka believes that when your time is up, it’s up. It was just not her time.

We Wear Orange

On Friday our family wears orange. You can’t compare pain and hurt like the one our people endured in the Residential Schools. You only have to ask someone in the community about the abuse that the schools caused, and each one could name 3 or 4 elders, uncles, or grandmas that endured the horrid pain. My mother never ended up in the schools but instead spent her years in the foster care system. When she was 9, she came downstairs looking for her brother, who lived in the home with her. The response to her inquiry, was simply “Your brother’s been adopted and you will never see him again.”

How does healing begin in a community that is still looked upon with such judgment and racism? Even growing up as the “lonely Indian”, I never shared my Metis heritage. Because you don’t tell people you’re “mixed”; my mother made sure of that. We only shared our Cherokee roots. I remember though, even then, the shame behind my culture in school and the mocking names people would give me when I would share small pieces of my culture and of my community even though, for the most part, I looked like a white girl. And once I shared my Aboriginal background, their faces changed and hardened slightly, as if they weren’t surprised that I was from an alcoholic single-parent family.

So much healing has to happen. The elders that taught, and continue to teach us, never share their anger like I expected they would. Only healing. Desperate to heal their community from the abuse that has since manifested into failed relationships, addictions and suicide.

So, as the lonely Indian girl that watched her family suffer from abuse, that looked in the eyes of people whose pain was so frightening from the memories of the schools, we stand. We wear orange shirts together. We will recollect and hope for the generations to come. But we won’t forget. We honor the courage and spirits of those who endured the schools. And teach our children of the healing that will come.

The Time of Your Life: Self/Time Management for Pastors

The Time of Your Life: Self/Time Management for Pastors

Randall exposes mass market books that propose one-minute management techniques, that offer one-size-fits-all prescriptions, or that treat symptoms instead of causes. Instead, he presents a compelling case for living the time of your life by taking care of yourself. First, he shows that time management problems are actually caused by a fragmentation within a leader’s personality, and not by having too many things to do. The loss of the self leads to a loss of direction or a loss of stability. Randall sets forth a useful chart for the levels of self/time managment that helps the leader place the self on any given day. One person might be living in “ambulatory” time. Another might be operating for “revealed” time. Randall teaches the leader how to do self-assessment. Then in separate chapters, he shows how self/time management will lead to more fulfilling and care-oriented preaching, more effective and wise church adminstration, and above all, the most helpful and healing pastoral care that a minister can offer.

Gulay Book 3, A Filipino Vegetarian Recipebook Series

Gulay Book 3, A Filipino Vegetarian Recipebook Series

Gulay is a Filipino vegetarian recipebook series written by the best-selling author Nona Lema. It is so aptly named because ‘gulay’ in the Filipino language means ‘vegetable’. This recipe book series comes from the Philippines, a beautiful country in Southeast Asia with more than 7,000 scenic islands. Gulay features traditional Filipino cuisine cooked the vegetarian way. Recipes are easy to follow and present Nona’s style of cooking that is simple, homey and delicious. The tastes and flavors may be appreciated by everyone. Gulay is just what you will love in a vegetarian cookbook: it transports you into the heart and soul of a culture that is so rich in culinary heritage. The true Filipino fare is actually a unique blend of east and west with very strong Spanish, Mexican, and Chinese influences. Many of the recipes are time-honored cooking traditions the Filipino people have inherited. After 300 years of Spanish colonization, Filipino favorite meat and vegetable stews such as Menudo, Caldereta, Afritada or Mechado have something of the delicious taste of Mediterranean food. This may be seen in the generous use of rich and savory tomato sauce and olive oil. Nona shows how these classic Spanish-inspired dishes can be cooked the healthy meatless way. Two and a half centuries (16th-18th century) of galleon trade between Manila, Philippines and Bahia de Acapulco, Mexico have also brought tremendous influence. Thus, Mexican soups such as Sopa de Albondigas, Sopa de Ajos, Sopa de Picadillos; and main dishes such as Adobo and Adobado, have crept into the Filipino food and stayed on till today. Nona shares the vegetarian versions of these recipes too. The ancient Chinese traders came to the Philippine shore as early as the 11th century, long before the Arabs or the Spaniards came. They introduced their ancient vegetarian food culture that centered on rice, soybeans and Chinese vegetables. Thus, the Filipinos learned how to eat tofu or tauho, taho, tahure and soy sauce; all k

For The First Time In Its 126-Year History, This Newspaper Endorsed A Democrat

The Arizona Republic has only endorsed Republican candidates for president in its 126-year history

But this year is different, the paper’s editorial board wrote on Tuesday.

Hillary “Clinton has the temperament and experience to be president,” the board wrote. “Donald Trump does not.”

The endorsement editorial, which said the paper has “a deep philosophical appreciation for conservative ideals and Republican principles,” praised Clinton for her experience, and trashed the GOP nominee. The paper wrote that Trump’s lack of control poses a real threat to national security and called his recent “conversion to conservatism unconvincing.”

The editorial also called out Trump for consistently making degrading comments toward women and minorities, which it said show “a stunning lack of human decency.”

The paper praised Clinton’s leadership, and wrote that the Democratic candidate’s stance on immigration issues is far closer to what Arizona residents want than anything Trump has suggested.

“Instead of offering solutions, he hangs scapegoats like piñatas and invites people to take a swing,” the editorial said.

The Arizona Republic is not the only conservative paper to endorse Clinton this year. New Hampshire’s Union Leader this month published a blistering editorial condemning Trump’s candidacy, and endorsing libertarian Gary Johnson. In June, the Dallas Morning News endorsed Clinton and bluntly stated that Trump did not deserve its readers’ votes.

As Vanity Fair’s Kurt Eichenwald pointed outClinton has received far more newspaper endorsements, many from conservative papers, than Trump.

While most newspaper endorsements don’t influence voters the way they once did, it’s rare for historically conservative papers to endorse a Democratic candidate for president.

Will Smith Disappointed ‘Concussion’ Didn’t Have More Impact On NFL

Actor Will Smith had expected the 2015 film “Concussion,” in which he plays a pathologist who exposes the truth about traumatic brain injuries in National Football League players, would lead to serious change in the sport.

Instead, alarming scientific research that the movie highlighted went largely overlooked, which Smith said came as a surprise, he told Vanity Fair.

“I thought ‘Concussion’ would have a bigger impact,” Smith told the magazine. “I knew it would be hard because people love the game, but the science is so overwhelming, and it’s something that we really need to take a look at.”

“I thought that people would get behind the mission of that,” he added. “I was surprised that people were absolutely like, ‘Nope, I’m not stopping watching football, so I don’t want to know.’”

The sports thriller is based on the true story of Dr. Bennet Omalu, a Nigerian American forensic pathologist who fought to prove that repeated blows to the head while playing football resulted in numerous athletes developing the brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE.

Before the movie was released to the public, Sports Illustrated’s Monday Morning Quarterback screened it for 70 former NFL players and their families.

“I watch this movie and I know we were paid to hurt people,” former linebacker Keith McCants told Sports Illustrated at the time. “We were paid to give concussions. If we knew that we were killing people, I would have never put on the jersey.”

CTE is triggered by concussions and other hard hits to the head. The brain disease is associated with memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, impulse control problems, aggression, depression, and progressive dementia, according to Boston University research

Last year, researchers with the Department of Veterans Affairs and Boston University found that 87 of 91 deceased former NFL players suffered from CTE, “Frontline” reported. Additionally, 131 of 165 individuals who played football at any level ― professionally, semi-professionally, in college or in high school ― tested positive.

In May, the NFL for the first time publicly acknowledged a link between football and CTE. Meanwhile, concussions remain a serious threat for players.

In 2015, the NFL counted 271 diagnosed concussions in practices, preseason and regular season, compared with 206 in 2014, and 229 in 2013, ESPN reported.

The league has said it is “deeply committed to continuing to accelerate scientific research and advancements in this critical area, and we stand ready to support additional independent research to that end.”

In April, a federal appeals court upheld an approximately $ 1 billion concussion settlement between the NFL and thousands of former players.

Residue Reviews / Rückstands-Berichte

Residue Reviews / Rückstands-Berichte

That residues of pesticide and other “foreign” chemicals in foodstuffs are of concern to everyone everywhere is amply attested by the reception accorded previous volumes of “Residue Reviews” and by the gratifying en- thusiasm, sincerity, and efforts shown by all the individuals from whom manuscripts have been solicited. Despite much propaganda to the contrary, there can never be any serious question that pest-control chemicals and food- additive chemicals are essential to adequate food production, manufacture, marketing, and storage, yet without continuing surveillance and intelligent control some of those thllJt persist in our foodstuffs could at times conceivably endanger the public health. Ensuring safety-in-use of these many chemicals is a dynamic challenge, for established ones are continually being displaced by newly developed ones more acceptable to food technologists, pharma- cologists, toxicologists, and changing pest-control requirements in progressive food-producing economies. These matters are also of genuine concern to increasing numbers of governmental agencies and legislative bodies around the world, for some of these chemicals have resulted in a few mishaps from improper use. Adequate safety-in-use evaluations of any of these chemicals persisting into our food- stuffs are not simple matters, and they incorporate the considered judgments of many individuals highly trained in a variety of complex biological, chemi- cal, food technological, medical, pharmacological, and toxicological disciplines.

Of Course Men Commented On Hillary Clinton’s Looks During The Debate

Oh the joys of being a woman. Your appearance is never *quite* acceptable enough.

Few understand this reality as well as Hillary Clinton. She’s weathered attacks on her hair, her scrunchies, her clothing, her age and her facial expressions.

When Clinton isn’t grinning constantly, she’s criticized, primarily by men, for not smiling enough. When she does smile ― like when she is winning her first general election presidential debate ― men think she’s, wait for it, smiling too much. Yes, that’s correct. The woman who was repeatedly told to smile by everyone from Reince Priebus to Ed Rendell, is now being told to smile less.

Just see the below sampling of tweets. Even The Atlantic’s David Frum got in on the fun!:

Fox News host Brit Hume took things one step further. He didn’t simply object to Clinton’s smile (or lack thereof) ― he took issue with her entire face.

“She looked composed, smug sometimes, not necessarily attractive,” he said.

Well, if Hume doesn’t think Clinton is very attractive, let’s just call this whole presidential race thing off. We all know ladies are only worth anything if they’re hot.

Bethlehem’s Enduring Bach Festival: GPS For The Soul

If you need to destress from the noise of the national debate, consider how the Bethlehem Bach Festival has helped communities come together to find calm, peace and prayer for more than 100 years.

2016-09-26-1474905909-5545014-Festival2016GregFUnfgeldCharlotteMattax.jpg

It was in 1900 that the two-year old Bach Choir of Bethlehem gave the first performance in North America of Bach’s greatest choral work, his Mass in B Minor. With only a few exceptions, the Choir has performed the Mass every year since. Their voices, nearly one hundred strong, cannot have been more fervent, nor more inspired by community spirit, than they were earlier this year at Packer Memorial Church, on the campus of Lehigh University, May 13 and 14. it was the first weekend of the 109th Bethlehem Bach Festival, and the house was packed.

Led by by Greg Funfgeld, artistic director and conductor since 1983, the Bethlehem Bach Festival’s two performances each year of its signature work, the Mass in B Minor, represent a link with the America of Andy Hardy. It was a time when classical music, and the arts in general, aspired to provide guidance and energy to communities nationwide; in the case of Bethlehem, it was according to the University’s holistic motto, “Homo Minister et Interpres Naturae,” which translates loosely to “Woman and Man, servants and interpreters of nature.”

2016-09-26-1474905863-9379570-Festival2016crowdoutsidePackerChurch.jpg The performance was one of integrity, movement, passion and weight. The effortless virtuosity and stylistic homogeneity of the combined forces in the chapel’s stone sanctity, allowed Bach’s music to sing out with infectious, exhilarating enthusiasm. Agnes Zsigovics, Rosa Lamoreaux, Daniel Taylor, Benjamin Butterfield, William Sharp and Daniel Lichti were outstanding soloists. The Choir was large, warm and flexible.

With a collaborative interpretive approach based on the latest scholarly research, kept honest by the great Bach biographer Christoph Wolff in the front row, Funfgeld focused on creating a compelling flow in which the emotional weight of each section was directed upwards, as if the music were being offered to Bach’s God. The rolling out of the massive, six-part fugue in the “Sanctus” was the most perfect single demonstration of how Funfgeld’s combined forces combined the intimate and the infinite. And beyond the music, there was a different authenticity from listening in an audience which, as I came to know, heard — as Bach intended in his humility — the prayers for consolation and peace inseparably from the music itself.

If you were not there, you can hear the same deep intensity of music making on the Festival’s recording from 1998. Bethlehem may no longer have Bethlehem Steel, but it has in the cultural fuel of its Bethlehem Bach Festival a generous helping of GPS for the soul.

2016-09-26-1474905935-9362483-Festival2016BachChoraleSing.jpg There was more to the two-day musical feast than just the B Minor Mass. On Friday afternoon, Dr. Wolff gave a stimulating lecture, and the first of two public, Bach chorale sing-alongs ensued. Friday evening, it was an exuberant, feel good concert of Bach’s gloriously optimistic Cantata No. 100, the Second Brandenburg Concerto with the brilliant trumpet soloist Terry Everson, and the procession of gorgeous delights known as the Easter Oratorio.

On Saturday morning, at the University’s Zoellner Arts Center just down the block, the Taylor 2 unit of the Paul Taylor Dance Company, with the Festival Orchestra in the pit, charmed the audience, who charmed them back with their encouragement and eager applause, in a series of joyful, inventive responses to and illuminations of music by Handel and Bach.

Then at last, after a brisk walk and a healthy lunch, the B Minor Mass of Johann Sebastian Bach, Part One, began at 2:30; Part Two began at 4:30. Then out into the night for a recreation on the Moravian College campus of the Cafe Zimmermann in Leipzig, where Bach and his fellow musicians and townspeople spent many pleasant evenings, quenching their thirsts in both music and coffee. It was thirsty work being Bach.

The Bethlehem Bach Festival’s endurance has enabled the Bach Choir of Bethlehem to give 31 concerts and educational programs year-round, reaching an audience of more than 20,000. The Choir will conclude its season December 10 and 11 with Christmas concerts in Bethlehem and Allentown, and probably snow on the ground and sleigh bells ringing in the air.

When Life Laughs At Your Best Laid Plans

This month found me exploring the country of Japan for the first time.

Those of you who know me won’t be surprised to learn that I did a whole lot of planning… or, as I lovingly called it, “Japlanning”… in the months leading up to the trip. And that Japlanning paid off.

Mostly.

There were a few moments, however, when things didn’t quite go according to the Japlan. When, it seemed, life seemed to laugh at it. Heartily.

Like when we walked a looooong way to get into the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.

2016-09-26-1474909189-4146063-blogclosedgate.jpg

Or when my eagerly anticipated stewed fishcake lunch had a texture I couldn’t quite…swallow.

2016-09-26-1474909227-5109784-blogfishcake.jpg

There were plenty of other examples during our two-week adventure, and Hubbie and I tried hard to gracefully make the best of these moments.

And we did. Sometimes.

And in those moments… when we let go of our stubborn hold on our plan, the unexpected turn of events became another part of the adventure.

Which led me to a new way of looking at life…and to a new word to describe it.

Plexible.

What does it mean to be plexible? It means you plan things out… and then you commit to being flexible in the moment.

See what I did there?

Stay with me… this is a bit more complex than it might sound at first.

There will be all kinds of times when you need to be plexible…

  • … like when you book the perfect flight to your class reunion, but weather makes it impossible to take off… so you need to figure out another way to connect with old friends
  • … like when you put together the perfect presentation on your research, but your daughter gets the flu on the big day… so you need to figure out another way to share the info with your colleagues
  • … like when you’ve actually read the book for book club, but a friend scores last-minute tickets to hear your favorite ’80s rock band… so you need to figure out how to graciously bail out of your club meeting (and get those stains out of your old acid-washed jeans pronto)

The thing is… this lesson is actually not about being plexible. That’s too simple and, frankly, there’s really no choice in the matter. We can make all the plans we want, and sometimes life just won’t cooperate.

This lesson is about our attitude around being plexible… It’s about making the choice to be plexible… to do it with curiosity and, sometimes, with delight. Because it’s all part of the adventure.

And, sometimes, the thing we didn’t plan for actually beats out anything we ever could have dreamed up beforehand.

The important thing here is to find the balance in our fun new language. After all, plexible is made up of two words, and they’re both critically important.

  • We must plan, because planning helps us intentionally take actions that guide us toward a wide variety of the goals and desires and needs that matter to us.
  • We must be flexible because our plans… well, they just don’t always stick. Life laughs. Outside forces — both good and bad — get in the way.

Sure, you can avoid being plexible. You can fail to plan and let life just happen without focusing on the things that truly mean something to you at the moment.

Or… you can plan so hard, and get so attached to it, that you stubbornly refuse to give it up when things go a different way. Which doesn’t just create a terrible situation, but a terrible mood.

Sure, being plexible isn’t always fun. Sometimes planning is a drag. And, sometimes, when our plans don’t go the way we want, when life might laugh at them a bit, we can get very, very disappointed.

But.

If you decide to not just accept the need to be plexible, but to intentionally be plexible, and to do so with curiosity, you might just find that your disappointments aren’t quite as disappointing as before. Or maybe they’re not as disappointing for quite as long.

You might find that the new things you discover as a result bring you a whole new set of opportunities.

And, I promise you, you will find that all of that planning does pay off sometimes. In fact, it pays off a lot of the time.

Like when you’ve received one too many Japanese tofu breakfasts…and you find yourself grateful that, thanks to your Japlanning, you brought some oatmeal packets from home.

Beyond Alternative Food Networks

Beyond Alternative Food Networks

Food activism is core to the contemporary study of food – there are numerous foodscapes which exist within the umbrella definition of food activism from farmer’s markets, organic food movements to Fair Trade. This highly original book focuses on one key emerging foodscape dominating the Italian alternative food network (AFN) scene: GAS (gruppi di acquisto solidale or solidarity-based purchase groups) and explores the innovative social dynamics underlying these networks and the reasons behind their success. Based on a detailed ‘insider’ ethnography, this study interprets the principles behind these movements and key themes such as collective buying, relationships with local producers and consumers, financial management, to the everyday political and practical negotiation involving GAS groups. Vitally, the author demonstrates how GAS processes are key to providing survival strategies for small farms, local food chains and sustainable agriculture as a whole. Beyond Alternative Food Networks offers a fresh and engaged approach to this area, demonstrating the capacity for individuals to join organised forms of alternative political ecologies and impact upon their local food systems and practices. These social groups help to create new economic circuits that help promote sustainability, both for the environment and labor practices. Beyond Alternative Food Networks provides original insight and in-depth analysis of the alternative food network now thriving in Italy, and highlights ways such networks become embedded in active citizenship practices, cooperative relationships, and social networks.

Debate Bar So Low For Donald Trump That If He Doesn’t Vomit, He’s Exceeded Expectations

Donald Trump is an arrogant slacker who wastes his time hanging out at greasy spoons when he should be spending his time studying ― not like that striving know-it-all Tracy Flick Hillary Clinton. Or at least, that’s what Trump’s campaign wants you to believe.

In the run-up to the first presidential debate Monday night, Trump’s team has been working to lower the bar so far for him that it’s basically just lying on the ground. Story after story talks about how Clinton is spending her time poring over wonky policy details in briefing books while Trump is just hanging out.

Trump senior adviser Jason Miller sent a memo this week stressing that Clinton “has more debates under her belt than almost any presidential candidate in history,” whereas Trump has been in a one-on-one debate only once.

“Hillary Clinton is on the ropes and needs to change the game,” Jason Miller, the Trump campaign’s senior communications adviser, said in a memo. “Given her extensive experience debating, high level of preparation, and scripted nature Clinton’s campaign no doubt views [the Monday debate] as the best opportunity to alter the trajectory of the race. … [Trump is] not rehearsing canned 30-second sound bites or spending hours in the film room like an NFL player. He will be prepared, but most importantly, he will be himself.”

This sort of expectation-managing creates an imbalanced scenario in which, as long as Trump shows up on time and manages not to puke or something, pundits will declare him the winner.

And the Trump team is certainly making its own preparations. Politico reported Friday that the campaign is building a detailed “psychological analysis” of Clinton by analyzing videos of her 16 years of debates.

The two candidates’ differential treatment was clear during a Sept. 7 veterans forum, the first such event during the general election. The moderator, NBC News host Matt Lauer, challenged Clinton on the use of her private email server and repeatedly interrupted her to stop her from filibustering. But with Trump, Lauer lobbed softballs like, “What have you experienced in your personal life or your professional life that you believe prepares you to make the decisions that a commander-in-chief has to make?”

“Candidates should expect to be challenged. They’re applying for a challenging job. But where Mr. Lauer treated Mrs. Clinton like someone running for president, he treated Mr. Trump like someone running to figure out how to be president, eventually,” New York Times TV critic James Poniewozik wrote in a scathing review the following day.

Clinton’s team, meanwhile, sent out a press release on Friday with the headline, “Clinton Campaign: Trump Cannot Pass Debate Test If He Repeats These Debunked Lies.” Trump lies all the time ― and often gets away with it. During the Sept. 7 forum, Trump again repeated the falsehood that he opposed the invasion of Iraq, and Lauer did nothing to call him out

“The debates are about each candidates laying out their vision for America, not making things up. Donald Trump should ― as Hillary Clinton will ― be expected to present his solutions for the problems that the country is facing,” Clinton campaign spokeswoman Jennifer Palmieri told reporters on Friday.

There’s a good reason for pre-debate wrangling: Scoring a knock-out could have enormous consequences. With a far closer race than many political observers anticipated, any development that could shift the polls even a few percentage points is desirable.

Political science research has shown that although debates don’t result in major poll changes, polls can shift by two or three percentage points during debate season. That doesn’t necessarily mean candidates’ performances during those events were the sole cause of the swing, but there does seem to be some effect.

Big debate moments can also come to define a candidate for the rest of the race and beyond, for better or worse ― Richard Nixon sweating next to a cool John F. Kennedy, Al Gore sighing while George W. Bush spoke and Michael Dukakis’ emotionless response to a hypothetical question about his wife being raped and murdered.

And a strong debate performance can re-energize a candidate’s base, much as it did in 2012, when Republican Mitt Romney pulled off a surprisingly strong showing against President Barack Obama ― a jolt the Clinton campaign could use right now as it tries to excite Democrats.

While Clinton will have the hurdle of meeting the public’s high expectations, Trump will have to debate the first female presidential nominee in history ― which comes with its own challenges. Clinton is traditionally a strong debater, and has benefited from the missteps of men who simply don’t know how to deal with a woman on the stage.

In 2008, Obama’s “You’re likable enough, Hillary” line backfired during a debate before the New Hampshire primaries, coming off as condescending in what was supposed to be an attempt to contrast his charisma with her more serious style. Clinton ended up winning in New Hampshire.

But more famous is what happened during the 2000 Senate race in New York, when Republican Rick Lazio walked out from behind his lectern and over to Clinton, invading her personal space and demanding she sign a campaign finance pledge. Clinton tried to shake his hand as he pointed and towered over her.

The maneuver was a disaster and has essentially become the textbook example of how a man can screw up when debating a woman.

There will certainly be a big audience no matter what happens during Monday’s event: More than 100 million people could tune in, exceeding previous records, for the 9:00 p.m. ET debate at Hofstra University in New York. A presidential debate commission official told The Huffington Post that several thousand journalists applied for credentials, and they expect more than 1,000 to actually attend.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly serial liar, birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

The 11 Struggles Of Hypersensitive Individuals

Here’s the cycle.

Person A does something person B doesn’t like.

Person B gets hurt and calls them out on it.

Person A gets mad at Person B.

It happens to me over and over and over again. It’s gotten to the point where I just expect it, like the people sitting in the splash zone at Sea World.

And then as I sat down to think about it, there’s a lot of struggles that us overly sensitive people go through. It’s not just one thing–it’s a multitude of them. So, in the name of self-therapy through writing, I’m going to list every single one of them.

1. We’re Always The Bad Guy, Even Though We Shouldn’t Be

I’m going to write that again. We’re always the bad guy, even though we shouldn’t be. When somebody hurts us, we tell them about it. Then after we tell them, they feel like we’re the ones attacking THEM, when we’re simply telling them what hurt us. People, it’s really not that hard to avoid being a complete Cotton-Headed Ninnymuggins to somebody. Shout out to Will Ferrel.

2. We Expect People To Be Somewhat Honorable

Many times when conflict arises and I know without a shadow of a doubt that I’m not wrong, I decide to just let things sit until an apology presents itself from the other party. Yeah, about 95 percent of the time that doesn’t happen. Our problem is we expect people to have at least a single shred of dignity and simply say two words that would make things better. Guys, being sensitive goes both ways. We get hurt, but all we need is a freaking apology and we’re better. We don’t need gifts and dinners and vases full of flowers.

And I also want to say that the ball isn’t always in our court. We need to express to the other party that something is wrong. That’s our duty to others.

3. Things End Up Blown Way Out Of Proportion

Because of our sensitivity, and because of the other party’s hard-headedness, things get blown way out of proportion. Things escalate because two simple words couldn’t be said. One person couldn’t humble themselves and say a simple apology.

4. We Can’t Fix It

In case anyone was wondering, we can’t fix this. For the most part, we’re very thoughtful individuals who expect much of ourselves and not much from others. But when somebody pushes our buttons, and we have a few, something must happen. It’s nothing that we can fix. We can try to improve at communicating that we’re hurt instead of internalizing it, but that’s it. We are who we are.

5. People Get Fed Up With Us Easily

It gets to the point with certain people where it’s like the boy who cried wolf syndrome. They get really annoyed that things keep going wrong, even when they should know by now what makes us tick. At one point you have to start wondering whether a relationship between the two of you is even healthy. Not all people are meant to get into a relationship with or be friends with somebody who is sensitive.

6. We’re Left Hurting Extremely Badly

When we do call people out on something, often times they just don’t apologize. Sometimes they even try to make it worse. This is the hardest part of it all because somebody we like or love is deliberately trying to hurt us more. Nothing is worse to a sensitive person than deliberate insensitivity.

7. Most Times We End Up Saying Sorry

Trust me, we hate conflict. We hate conflict as much as we hate getting our feelings hurt. So to bypass conflict we end up saying sorry simply to make things normal again. This isn’t a healthy way to take care of the situation at all.

8. Some Times We’re Serious And Cut People Off

Sometimes we are serious and end up cutting people off for good. And no, it wasn’t all just because of a dumb little text or a dumb little side comment–it was because the other person didn’t have the humility to simply take two seconds to say sorry. Literally all we want is an apology. When we’re hurt that bad, we remember it.

9. People Simply Don’t Learn

After a few months of knowing someone, you kind of understand what makes them tick and what doesn’t make them tick. For those who are friends with sensitive people, you should be able to understand that we have a few land mines embedded in the soil of our personality, but if you simply avoid doing just one or two things, life with us is going to be absolute gravy.

10. We Sound Over-Emotional

I’m sure you got that just from reading this post. The truth is that we’re amazing friends to have. We’ll put in more effort than anyone else and we’ll also be much more thoughtful than anyone else. It goes both ways. You get the insane highs with the lows. And the fact is that you won’t even get the lows that much if you simply stop doing the two or three things that we don’t like!

11. It’s Hard To Find Someone That Gets It

I have a few friends that get it. They understand that sometimes jokes need to be kept to a minimum, and that I have my stressful days every now and then. I hardly fight with these kinds of people. For the most part we have awesome times together with little to no conflict at all, while on the other hand I could have multiple conflicts a day with somebody else.

Again, it all depends on the personality of the people around us, and whether they even care about the sensitivity of other people.

What You Can Learn From Talking To A 90-Year Old

2016-09-25-1474825017-4549814-L1010393.jpg
Pretty good shape for 90 – must be those G&Ts

Last week we celebrated my father-in-law’s 90th birthday.

There was a time when even getting to 90 was a major achievement, and if someone were lucky enough to make it to 90, they were generally frail, wheelchair bound and barely aware of the celebration going on around them.

I remember when my great grandmother hit 90. She was in a nursing home, bent over, in a wheelchair. She barely knew where she was, or who she was. That was some time ago.

For my father-in-law, Ken Pattenden, nothing could be further from the truth. The man still stands a lean and wiry six foot plus (as I am only 5’6″, I find this alone intimidating), has a full head of hair, a crushing handshake, an athlete’s build and more than all his marbles. I suppose it’s a tribute to genetics and clean living.

In any event, to celebrate the event, we all gathered in one of those massive old English country houses (did I mention that he lives in the UK?), and gathered the family for a weekend long party.

Ken was born in 1926, (you don’t have to be a math major to have figured that one out), one year before Charles Lindbergh became the first person to fly across the Atlantic. Lindbergh’s flight took 33½ hours in a tiny, one-seater, single engine plane made of wood and cloth, lacking even a front window. It was hailed as the ‘wonder of the world’.

Our trans-Atlantic flight took about 6 hours. We slept most of the way in the reclining beds and we watched a movie. They also served us two meals. Lindbergh brought along some sandwiches.

The world has changed a lot since 1927, when Lindbergh made his historic flight. Sometimes, we lose sight of that.

This remarkable transformation, all of it, took place within my father-in-law’s lifetime.

At dinner, I asked Ken about his experiences in the Second World War. He served in the British navy, assigned to Alexandria, in Egypt. At that time, Britain was still the British Empire and Britain ruled one-quarter of the world’s surface and also ruled one-quarter of the world’s population. Today, they are down to a few islands, and maybe Scotland, if they stay lucky.

But, prior to the war and signing up with the Navy, Ken had grown up and lived in London. This was during the Blitz, the German bombing of the city, and he recounted that as well – walking past houses that had been simply blown to oblivion overnight, and never knowing when or if you were going to get hit.

As we chatted, his wife of 60 plus years, Anne, who was sitting next to him also joined in.

She recalled that as a child in a small English village, they had no running water. Her mother had to go to the well in the center of the village and fill jugs each day. They had no central heating – all of the heat, and the cooking, was provided by an open fire. They had no indoor plumbing, but rather an outhouse behind the house. And no electricity, at least in the earliest days. They had no refrigerator, but instead an ice box that would, when it was available, be stocked with a block of ice to keep food cool.

She remembered the first car in the village, the first phone. She went on to become a head teacher. Ken became an accountant.

The transitions in the course of their lives, from the time they were born until the present is, well, mind-boggling. The changes they have seen and personally experienced represent a transformation so massive that, frankly, personal computers and iPhones (he is quite good with his), which we think of as major are, in fact, minor events.

When Ken and Anne were born, the world was, in many ways, far closer to what it had been for more than 500 years in the past, maybe a thousand. Most transport was done by animal power or walking. Agriculture was largely driven by animal power as well. Modern medicine was virtually unknown. You could die of a simple infection. Penicillin only came into public use in 1942! Last year Ken had laser cataract surgery and a few years before, an artificial replacement knee.

Automobiles, airplanes, telephones, refrigeration, running water, central heating, electricity, modern medicine, television, radio – the changes that their one lifetime has encompassed was probably the greatest transformation that any generation has ever seen, or for that matter, is ever likely to see.

We like to complain that ‘things are bad’. This is particularly true in this election cycle. Things are terrible. Things have never been worse.

What we are lacking is a sense of history.

Talk to a 90 year old the next chance you get. I think you will see that things are not quite so bad after all.

Good News! Kim Kardashian Made Up Her Mind And She’s Voting For Hillary Clinton

Kim Kardashian has made up her mind about who she’s voting for in the upcoming presidential election. On Saturday, the 35-year-old took the time to explain the context in which she told Wonderland magazine that she was “on the fence,” about who to vote for ― implying that she was considering voting for Donald Trump.

In a post on her website and app, Kardashian made it clear that she intend to vote for Hillary Clinton.

“There was a point when I wasn’t 100% sure I was even going to vote in this election; I didn’t want to vote blindly,” Kardashian wrote. “But I also thought about how not voting would mean that I wasn’t making my voice heard, so I decided to talk to my closest friends and family who I love and trust, to have an open conversation about politics.”

Kardashian explained that she had a “long conversation” with her stepparent Caitlyn Jenner, who encouraged her to research the candidates and their policies before making a decision.

“And so that’s what I did. I thought about the things that are so important to me that they outweigh everything else, such as gun control and protecting women’s rights to safe and legal abortion,” the reality star wrote, ultimately coming to the conclusion that she “without a doubt” stands with Clinton.

“I’m with her. I believe Hillary will best represent our country and is the most qualified for the job. This year, I’m not just voting for myself, but also for my children, and I took that into careful consideration when I made my decision.”

Kardashian did, however, appear to leave herself a little wiggle room in case Trump wins:

Now that I have made my choice I want to be clear… I would never judge anyone based on their political or religious beliefs. I believe that both candidates have the intention of making the country a safer and stronger place for every American, they just have different ideas about how we get there.

Well, that’s all cleared up.

Vital Lessons Learned From The Chelsea Bombing From A Chelsea Psychologist

The following post was created for Self-Therapy Month at Techealthiest. This is Part One.

When frightening events like the Chelsea bombing and the additional planting of nine other bombs from New Jersey to New York occur, we have no choice but to create a mental file in which to place our thoughts, feelings and images associated with the attack.

It has to be stored in your memory one way or another.

Those of us who live or work in New York City have been more directly affected by this nerve-shaking attack, but its explosive effects are, without a doubt, far-reaching, as news, commentary and images have been repeatedly catapulted from the media toward our eyes and ears, which essentially forces us to make sense of what happened.

At worst, you’ve been vicariously traumatized by the bombing (or directly traumatized if you were on 23rd Street that Saturday night). The more common reaction among is to be shaken and disturbed in the days following the bombing, followed by a few weeks of talking about the bombing with your social and work circles.

Social media essentially guarantees that you’ll have to grapple with disturbing thoughts about the attack, but for how long will  these thoughts linger in your mind?

This leads me to the question I’ve been pondering since the event occurred: What is considered a “healthy” way to reflect upon the Chelsea bombing way after the event, as well other terror attacks that have occurred (and God forbid might happen again)?

Here are four things to be remembered about the attack that will promote health and personal responsibility.

1) Use the memory of this event to remind you of all that you currently have, most notably things that money can’t buy.

You actually are rich because you have everything you need right now. Dare to be more thankful than you’ve been of late. Let the memory of the terror attack spark a feeling of gratitude toward the people in life who are invested in your happiness AND the people who don’t seem invested in your happiness.

It’s just too easy to lose touch with what matters most. Life can change in a split second. Don’t forget that but it’s not healthy to think about this idea all of the time because it can turn to anxiety if it becomes an obsession.  See this horrible event as a beautiful opportunity to be reminded of all that you have, especially your freedom, friends, health, family or whatever matters most to you.

2) Think twice…three times…a thousand times about the consequences of spreading hatred before you utter a single word.

There are two hugely important points here. First, on a personal level, when you spread hatred, you’re killing the cells in your body. You lose. A part of you dies. The spread of word venom is an artificial way to expand your ego by diminishing others. It certainly makes you depressed and it pushes people away from you, except for people who either are as angry as you are or whose lives are devoid of meaning and are looking for something to believe in.

Second, the expression of hatred on the web can cause real harm to people. There are people out there who feed off of hatred. Keep in mind that social media creates a thunderclap that spreads like wildfire through the web. For people who feel powerless, this is a place to gain a synthetic sense of power. Hatred on social media spreads like cancer, and makes everyone sick.

Please know that if you’re constantly ranting on Facebook about Trump or Clinton or any person or group with whom you have a major problem, most of your “friends” are viewing you as crazy. They probably contemplated defriending you, but they’re either lazy or they don’t want to have to randomly face your scariness in the supermarket or at your next high school reunion. Instead, they’ve subtly unfollowed you and connected your current venomous behavior to a past memory of you being something negative. Please know that I’m referring to the expression of hatred, not anger, the latter of which can often be healthy and productive to express.

3) The collective American attention span is shrinking at an alarming rate.

The speed at which information travels makes us more likely to be satiated at a faster rate. In other words, you’ve probably been bombarded by news of the bombing so much that you eventually either tune it out completely or you go numb when you hear about it. The danger here is that you’re likely to miss the value inherent in remembering what happened and what could have been.

How do you counter a natural tendency for your emotional reactions toward the Chelsea bombing to become watered down as a result of social media satiation? At minimum, make a reminder to mention the bombing at your next major family, religious or other gathering. Talk about the event in terms of how it affected you and what you now feel thankful for. Another strategy is to find a way to express your thoughts and feelings about the event though a creative modality that you repeat even months after the disturbing event. For example, if you dabble in acrylic art, create a series of paintings over time which serve as an expression of your inner experience of the incident.

4) Crowdsourcing is a weapon against terror.

Yes, social media (and the media in general) spread hatred, false beliefs and dangerous calls to action faster than the world as ever known. How little it takes for an individual to incite violence on the web is scary, but various forms media can also (obviously) be used to spread good and inform people of important developments. Case in point: the capture of Ahmad Khan Rahimi, the Chelsea bomber. Harry Bains had been watching CNN, which allowed him to recognize Rahimi who was sleeping next to Bain’s bar in Linden, New Jersey. This is loosely an example of how crowdsourcing can aid in spreading valuable information to combat terror.

Who knows what the next incident will be? Use the internet as a way to inform people if something suspicious is happening in front of you. You have the loudest megaphone ever created in the form of Twitter and Facebook.

There’s much more to say here, but it’s time to digest and return to this topic soon. This essentially reflects the optimal strategy. Ponder the horrible events that occurred. Learn from it. Vow to appreciate life more at least in the short term. Move on but return to it at a later date. Just don’t forget.

Stay tuned for Part Two of my lessons learned from the Chelsea bombing.

Integrator Alert: Demand Time (and Changes) in the FDA’s Move Limiting Access and Increasing Costs of Dietary Supplements

Removal of many dietary supplements from the market. Increased prices for patients and consumers. Limited access to key nutritional tools for practitioners who have used them safely for decades.

Charges like these against a proposal of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have propelled many Paul Revere rides through the alternative and integrative medicine community. One wonders with blasts against the FDA if it is “wolf” that is being cried.

2016-09-24-1474737510-3070699-FDA213X110.gif

Best assessment: not this time. I received an urgent email from long-time Integrator adviser Michael Levin of Health Business Strategies. Levin’s executive roles over the past 4 decades have included positions with pharma companies, medical device firms, as well as supplements firms. He’s a level headed analyst. He pointed to a perspective of the Council for Responsible Nutrition:

“Collectively the draft FDA Guidance can be viewed as a variety of maneuvers by the FDA to re-characterize as many dietary supplements as possible as [New Dietary Ingredients] and then propose a standard of proof for their safety that few manufacturers would be able to meet; one that Congress and the courts clearly did not intend to be applied to dietary supplements.”

Urge the FDA to add a 120 day extension to the comment period

At issue is Docket Number FDA-2011-D-0376: “Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues: Guidance for Industry.” The present comment period ends October 11. Levin urges all organizations with a stake in the industry to make their voices heard.

The first step: request a 120 day extension to allow a regulation of this importance to be thoroughly vetted. A draft letter of request is affixed below.

2016-09-24-1474753206-6563239-CRNJointHeader120611400x105.jpg

CRN wasn’t acting alone. It signed a joint statement with the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), the Natural Products Association (NPA), and the United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA). The group of organizations called for “an overhaul” of the guidance. Best estimates are that compliance will cost the industry $ 2-billion to $ 6-billion a year. These costs that will be passed through to patients and consumers.

Levin is realistic about the challenges the guidance poses for anyone not intimately involved with manufacturing and sourcing processes. He warns that “this highly technical regulatory guidance document is very complex.” One example: if the guidance were adopted, a manufacturing change will trigger new dietary ingredient (NDI) status which, due to routine manufacturing processes, “essentially will put most botanical extracts into NDI territory.” If so, this would add substantially to regulatory burden, and cost.

For these reasons Levin, pictured below, “encourage(s) all practitioner-stakeholders to request a 120 day extension on the comment period (now due on 10/11/16) to allow a careful review.” In his view, “medical doctors, pharmacists, naturopathic doctors and other healthcare practitioners should review this guidance and consider how it may impact their ability to prescribe safe nutritional interventions to help their patients.”

2016-09-24-1474754646-3300244-levinmichael2015.jpg

Levin urges all who are affiliated with professional organizations or institutions linked in any way to supplement use to respond – and also send copies of their letters to US Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Maria Cantwell (D-WA)

If guaranteeing safety is the FDA’s primary concern, attacking the dietary supplement manufacturing is roughly like the IRS seeking to balance the budget by auditing people who make under $ 50,000 a year. With a significant percent of the estimated 251,000 medical deaths a year linked to pharmaceutical use, maybe a better use of the FDA’s team on this project would be to set them to mining in a deeper vein of public harm than to making more expensive the agents people are using instead of pharmaceuticals.

Bottom line: Levin’s call for an extension makes sense. No need for the FDA to rush on this one. Get your request for an extension and comments in!

Re: Docket Number FDA-2011-D-0376 – Request for 120 Day Extension for Comment Period (“Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues: Guidance for Industry”)

This is to respectfully request a 120 Day extension for comment period on this draft guidance.

As written, the guidance raises very serious questions about the future availability of safe dietary supplements recommended by healthcare practitioners to help patients maintain and improve their health.

Physicians, doctors and pharmacists use nutrient repletion and targeted nutritional interventions to improve the health status of the patients we serve. In so doing, our patients can live healthier lives. Evidence also exists that these nutritional interventions may reduce healthcare costs, safely.

Since this guidance is highly technical and appears to have a high likelihood of impacting the practice of nutritional medicine, we simply need more time to study, understand and consider how this guidance might impact our ability to help the patients we serve. The issues of manufacturing changes, ODIs vs NDIs, the position on synthetic botanicals, the cost of redundancy of NDINs and how that might impact innovation, product availability, consumer prices and ingredient availability are some of the issues that need careful exploration. Products on formularies will need to be reviewed to determine how this guidance, if adopted, would impact their availability.

Please extend the comment period by (at least) 120 days (to February 11, 2017) so that we may evaluate the impact this important guidance may have on public health and safety, in general, and the patients we serve, in particular.

Thank you.

Sincerely

Wife to Charlotte Police: ‘Don’t Shoot Him. He Has No Weapon.’

Two more black men have been shot and killed by police: in Charlotte, North Carolina (Keith Lamont Scott) and in Tulsa, Oklahoma (Terence Crutcher).

WARNING: THESE VIDEOS ARE GRAPHIC AND THE AUDIO UNSETTLING AND EXPLICIT.

This is a tale of two cities.

In one city, there is police accountability and no rioting. In the other city, there is no police accountability. For days, there are riots and protests by the public.

Here is the wife’s cell phone video of the Charlotte shooting. The audio is heartbreaking, as she alternately pleads with the police and with her husband:

Here is the Police video of the Charlotte shooting:

There is nothing wrong with your phone or computer. The video was not released. Charlotte’s police chief said Thursday the agency will not publicly release video footage of Keith Lamont Scott’s death.

Here is a video of the rioting in Charlotte.

That is the tale of one city, Charlotte.

Here is the tale of the other city.

Here is the Police Video of the Tulsa, Oklahoma shooting of Terrence Crutcher (19:43:52)

Here is news of the indictment of the officer involved in the Tulsa shooting for manslaughter.

Here is a video of the rioting in Tulsa:

There is no video because there was no rioting.

Two cities, two shootings. Different governmental reactions, different responses by the people. See the connection?

When there is a responsive police force and the citizens feel their concerns are being heard, they are largely willing to let the system work.

Here are two questions that hopefully will be answered in short order:

In Tulsa, how did the PCP get to the scene, where it was discovered by the police? Did the victim have it? That’s what the police imply.

In Charlotte, how did the weapon get to the scene where it was discovered by the police? Did the victim have it? That’s what the police imply.

Its pretty important for the official narrative to show the public that the victims somehow “deserved to be shot.” That’s why there was so much discussion about the convenience store crime in Ferguson which led to the shooting of Michael Brown.  His death was somehow justified in the eyes of some if he was a bully in a stop and shop, the theory goes.

We don’t know the answer to the two questions, but…

There are two terms of police lingo that everyone should learn. “Throwaways” and “Flaking”

“Throwaways”: are untraceable small caliber weapons (guns) allegedly carried by some police officers, often in a leg holster, that can be clandestinely dropped where the police need to find a weapon.

“Flaking”: this is the secretive dropping of untraceable drugs, allegedly by police officers, where the police need to find drugs.

Nobody really knows whether the gun and PCP were genuinely at the scene of each respective shooting, but hopefully a complete investigation will uncover the truth.

This writer has the utmost respect and appreciation for law enforcement officers and the work they do. It is selfless, thankless and dangerous work, and the criminals they face do not subscribe to such niceties as following the law.

But we’ve reached a tipping point in America, where people across the political spectrum have seen years of these shootings and are fed up.

Here are some similar encounters of the recent past.

ALTON STERLING (Baton Rouge Man Selling CDs)

PHILANDO CASTILE (Minnesota Man Pulled Over for Busted Tail light, shot while moving arm)

TAMIR RICE (Cleveland 12-year-old with a toy gun) The squad car appears at 0.17.

ERIC GARNER (New Yorker selling “loose cigarettes”) “I can’t breathe” chokehold video.

SANDRA BLAND (Traffic stop, Waller County, Texas)

MICHAEL BROWN (Ferguson, Missouri). No video is available, but this is a story of the aftermath.

My Stepmom Died And That’s Not Okay

I’ve been having some health problems.

In order to resolve them, I did what any good adult would do: I went to the doctor. It turns out, I’m stressed. I’m stressed in the kind of way that makes your eye twitch for no apparent reason and makes you cry when you drop your fork on the ground (it had one last bite of broccoli on it, okay?).

My doctor asked me about my life and what I have experienced in the last year. I droned on about my engagement (yay!), moving to a new city, planning a wedding, financial troubles, health problems, and the passing of my stepmother.

“You said your mother-in-law died?”

“No, my stepmom.”

“Oh. I was about to say…that is awful! Not that losing your stepmother isn’t awful, but…”

My stepmom passed away seven months ago. This is not the first time I have experienced a less-than-sympathetic reaction. This is not the first time I have had to stifle my tears and reciprocate a stranger’s words with a forced smile. Our society has an innate bias towards the word stepmother.

I blame Cinderella. Thanks, Disney.

I have to be honest here: we bickered a lot. She was stubborn. I was stubborn. We fought, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t love her. It doesn’t mean that it hurt any less when my father called me on that otherwise beautiful Thursday morning and told me she was gone. It doesn’t mean that I didn’t have to dig deeper than I ever thought possible, to find strength I didn’t know I had, to organize a funeral and finalize all of the details so my dad didn’t have to.

I haven’t fully mourned her loss yet. I don’t know if I have it in me to. She has been in my life since I was a tiny human running around with my blanket and sucking my thumb. With my wedding less than two months away, it’s finally starting to hit me that she wont be present. There are certain things that have always meant more to me when she would say them. Hearing her tell me that I’m beautiful has always been one of them. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because you expect your biological parents to tell you you’re beautiful. Maybe it means something different when it comes from a “step.” Knowing that I wont hear those words from her on that day stings. It stings the way a stranger’s words sting when they assume I’m fine because I only lost a stepparent. I was only her stepdaughter.

The loss of a stepparent is confusing. Sometimes I feel guilty. Sometimes I feel angry. Sometimes I feel like I shouldn’t be allowed to feel sad because she wasn’t actually my mom. Sometimes I feel like I’m betraying my actual mom by feeling sad.

And, what may be the worst of all feelings, sometimes I feel like I don’t get to feel sad because at times we simply didn’t get along.

I know I’m not the only one who has experienced (or is experiencing) something similar. I know I’m not the only stepchild who has experienced this kind of a loss. I want to change the narrative. I want people to understand the complex range of emotions that can accompany the death of a stepparent when both biological parents are still very active in a child’s (or adult’s) life.

I am blessed. I have an amazing mom and I have a phenomenal dad. I also have a kick-ass stepfather whom I love dearly. Just because I have all of these things, that doesn’t mean that my stepmother’s death should be diluted. I am not deserving of less time to grieve or less time to process what happened simply because my bio parents are amazing.

What I am deserving of is a little bit of compassion.

It has been seven months.

And I think I have finally started to grieve.

This post is part of Common Grief, a Healthy Living editorial initiative. Grief is an inevitable part of life, but that doesn’t make navigating it any easier. The deep sorrow that accompanies the death of a loved one, the end of a marriage or even moving far away from home, is real. But while grief is universal, we all grieve differently. So we started Common Grief to help learn from each other. Let’s talk about living with loss. If you have a story you’d like to share, email us at strongertogether@huffingtonpost.com.

‘Love Hormone’ Oxytocin May Enhance Feelings Of Spirituality

The same hormone that helps mothers bond with their newborns may also enhance feelings of spirituality, a new study suggests.

It’s been called the “love hormone” and the “cuddle chemical,” but doctors and scientists know it as oxytocin, a hormone secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland during times of love and bonding.

A recent study spearheaded by Duke University social psychologist Patty Van Cappellen found that participants who received doses of oxytocin reported a greater sense of spirituality than those who received a placebo.

“Oxytocin appears to be part of the way our bodies support spiritual beliefs,” Van Cappellen said in a statement.

For research purposes, the study defined spirituality as a sense of connection to a higher power or to the world that gives meaning to people’s lives.

Eighty-three men between the ages of 35 to 64 participated in the study. Each participant received either a dose of oxytocin or a placebo, administered through a nasal spray.

Researchers found that those who received oxytocin were more likely to report feeling that spirituality was important in their lives and that life has meaning and purpose. They were also more likely to give higher ratings to statements like, “All life is interconnected” and “There is a higher plane of consciousness or spirituality that binds all people.”

Participants also listened to a guided meditation, after which those who received oxytocin reported experiencing more positive emotions like awe, gratitude, hope, inspiration, interest, love and serenity than those who received a placebo.

The study’s results held true regardless of whether the participant reported belonging to an organized religion or not, and they remained consistent a week after the hormone and placebo were administered.

Van Cappellen noted that the results of the study could only be applied to men given that the research subjects were all males. Oxytocin produces slightly different results in men and women, she said, and thus further studies should investigate the hormone’s role on women’s spirituality.

Even among men, the effect might not be uniform. The study also showed that oxytocin has a stronger spiritual effect on people with a particular variant of the CD38 gene, which regulates the release of oxytocin from hypothalamic neurons in the brain.

“Spirituality is complex and affected by many factors,” Van Cappellen said. “However, oxytocin does seem to affect how we perceive the world and what we believe.”

But Van Cappellen isn’t alone in her findings. Previous studies have shown oxytocin to have a profound impact on spirituality, as well as generosity, altruism, and empathy. Oxytocin has also been shown to play a role in experiences of spiritual transformation.

But it has a dark side, too.

A 2010 study of Dutch males out of the University of Amsterdam found that male subjects who received a dose of oxytocin were more likely to express ethnocentric prejudice and xenophobia than those who received a placebo.

Luckily, spirituality isn’t bound by hormones alone. It’s how we choose to define our spirituality ― whether as a connection to all creation on our global home or loyalty only to those who look, act and believe as we do ― that makes all the difference.

Indian Democracy Undermined

Indian Democracy Undermined

I am presenting book “Indian Democracy Undermined” to restore lost track of Democratic Principles in India which is quite alarming. I have proposed to end existing wrong Policies in India, Corruption and Terrorism, since 2009. I have drawn attention to this critical matter and requested high level authorities, the copies of Letters are consolidated and becoming the part of this book. My country has adopted Democratic Principles OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE and now it is totally REPLACE BY OF THE FEW PEOPLE, BY THE FEW PEOPLE, FOR THE FEW PEOPLE. 820 Million People of India has desire for FREE FOOD, FREE SHELTER, FREE EDUCATION, FREE ELECTRIC, FREE WATER FREE…. and All Political Parties in India are out to Appease these People in different way and manner to remain in power. Hard earn Revenue collected from Hard Working People are easily taken out simply, to keep these 820 million people calm and vote for them. Political Parties in India invented noble way to Provide Dish with FREE MEAL to 820 millions and Keep them Calm for VOTE and Harass Hard Working People to extract more revenue by mean of FINE/PENALTY/PROSECUTION. Such Governing system in the Name of Democracy, need to be change in the interest of Nation. As the National Forum was not keen to take corrective measures, I was left with no option to draw the attention of International Forum to this critical matter, in the long term interest of the Nation. Millennials: We Owe It To Our Country To Prevent A Trump Presidency

In order to be heard, you need people in power who are willing to listen.

Without that, nothing else matters. I don’t care how obvious you think your cause is – voting rights, climate change, money in politics, inequality, economic growth – you name it. Protests, social media rants, blog posts, petitions – all of it is useless without allies in state legislatures, governorships, Congress, the courts, federal agencies, and the presidency.

No one is happy with the two major parties, including me, but “the two party system” exists because the Constitution created a plurality voting system, in which the candidate with the most votes wins. The two party system is written into the DNA of this country. I’m all in favor of ranked-choice voting, which would help change that, but voting third-party in this election won’t accomplish that goal. For reference, Maine is holding a referendum on whether to institute this method for down-ballot races, likely because they keep electing the bigoted and emotionally unstable Paul LePage in three-way races.

In the meantime, you have two flawed, realistic options, and millennials, when you look at the issues, the difference between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump is the difference between a rash and organ failure. If what you hope for is to be heard when you demand a more inclusive society, more widely shared prosperity, and dignity for all Americans no matter their religion, skin color, gender, or sexual orientation, opposing Donald Trump is not enough. You have to vote for Clinton.

Even if you think Hillary Clinton believes in none of those things, the fact that she claims to matters. Voters overestimate the importance of a politician’s perceived “genuine” beliefs, which privilege the loudest, charismatic people over the quiet but productive ones. What should matter is their ability to listen to voters and deliver solutions that genuinely improve their lives.

For all her flaws, Hillary Clinton played a crucial role in improving people’s lives no matter where she’s served:

Where Donald Trump seeks to divide and enrage, Hillary Clinton seeks to build and befriend. Yes, she is awkward, unexciting, intensely private, too friendly with Wall Street, and too comfortable using the military. But she is capable of learning and listening to others – of balancing competing concerns, making informed judgments, and changing her mind when presented with new facts. Those capacities are essential for any president and Trump lacks all of them.

Further, Clinton knows this is not the 1990s, and that her party has turned against financial deregulation, mass incarceration, and cutting the social safety net. She’s running on the most progressive platform in the Democratic Party’s history and knows that we expect her to enact as much of it as she can.

The temptation to vote for Gary Johnson or Jill Stein is an understandable one, especially for millennials, who greatly value freedom of choice. But American presidential elections are not marketplaces, but hugely consequential decisions that mean acceptance or oppression – even life or death for many Americans. Voting to punish “the two party system” or because you think a third-party candidate best fits your views will condemn many of your fellow citizens to Trump’s wrath and the world to an uncertain and unstable future.

We’re obligated to protect and defend one another – in our homes, our schools, our workplaces, and yes, in our elections. Voting for anyone other than Hillary Clinton is forsaking that duty.

The American Consultants Rx discount prescription cards are to be given free to anyone in need of help curbing the high cost of prescription drugs.

Due to the rising costs, unstable economics, and the mounting cost of prescriptions, American Consultants Rx Inc. (ACRX) a.k.a (ACIRX) an Atlanta based company was born in 2004. The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. They also possess no eligibility requirements, no forms to fill out, or expiration date as well .One card will take care of a whole family. Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. Please include name (if organization please include organization and contact name),mailing address, designate Spanish or English, amount of cards requested, and telephone number.

American Consultants Rx is working diligently to assist as many people and organizations as possible. It should be noted that while many other organizations and companies place a cost on their money saving cards, American Consultants Rx does not believe a cost should be applied, just to assist our fellow Americans. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

Jew Am I?

2016-09-22-1474519476-6095897-ScreenShot20160921at9.44.03PM.png

Despite my unpronounceable surname, formidable Dukakis-level brow line and decidedly Jewtastic seasonal allergies, I’ve always considered myself a regular, average American. I’ve lived in America for all 50 of my 50 years, if we count Los Angeles as part of America. And some people do. On Friday nights, I solve Blue Bloods murders right alongside Tom Selleck’s mustache. On Saturday mornings, I’ll watch any college football game you place in front of me, even the traditional battle between the Devry Institute and Clown College. And on the 4th of July, I not only root for Joey Chestnutt in the Hot Dog Eating contest, but I’ll often eat along with him. You know, for moral support. I like my sitcoms with three cameras and my omelettes with three cheeses. I cried at Argo, Sully, Rudy and Miracle. I complain about traffic and Mondays and my back and gridlock in Washington. See? Regular. Average. American.

And then there are occasional days, when I still feel like a guest, trying to “pass”. But hey, what are you gonna do?

Not long ago, I was at the dentist when their hygienist asked if I was Persian. I answered “No, but that’s funny I do get that a lot. My grandparents were Sephardic. From Turkey.” Apparently, I had given the wrong answer. Apparently, I had given the most grievous answer known to man. Turns out my hygienist wasn’t Persian, but Armenian. And she spent the next ten minutes holding me a little too responsible for the Armenian Genocide, while never once removing her finger from my mouth. “I guess maybe there’s such a thing as a good Turk” she offered with all the resolute conviction of someone reading a ransom note with an off-camera Glock pointed at her head. She then made repeated references to “your people.” My grandparents moved here a hundred years ago. My people are from Encino. As I’ve been known to say, the only things they committed genocide against are pound cake and my self-esteem.

I can’t say I grew up in a super Jewish home. We were Reform. So reform that our temple had a swimming pool, hence it’s common appellation as the “shul with a pool.” I went to Nursery and Hebrew School there and had my bar mitzvah there, but we were mostly High Holiday kind of Jews. And even then, those services were frequently held in a Presbyterian Church. I did mention this was LA, didn’t I?

The other thing that muddled my Jewish identity was the fact that I was half-Sephardic (from Turkey) and half-Ashkenazi (from Poland and Austria). I always thought of my parents as just two Valley Jews. Their nearly matching tennis gear didn’t belie some cultural chasm to my ten year-old eye. But apparently, their union had been the Judeo equivalent of an inter-marriage. I never really considered that there was much difference between my grandparents. But looking back, one side, the Bel Air side, were close friends with Richard Nixon. On the other side, the Fairfax side, I had a grandmother so old country that she didn’t drive, pronounced Seattle as “Seatt-Lee” and wouldn’t buy me root beer because a kid shouldn’t drink alcohol. And a grandfather who, I swear, had at least 8 brothers named “Victor.”

I went to a public elementary school that was so Jewish, I didn’t even realize anyone there was Jewish. I just thought all guys were as bad as me at contact sports. And all girls had frizzy hair and topped out at 5’2.

My first real understanding that not everyone celebrated Shavuot, came when I entered my Episcopalian middle school. Some of the clues included boys with blond hair, Topsiders, restricted counry clubs, tee times and a group called the Sons of Hitler that drew swastikas on our lockers. I don’t believe they received course credit for their hard work. But they didn’t receive suspensions either. This was back in the day, when “kike” was tossed around as casually and without consequence as “fag.” And if you happened to be a sensitive Jew, you frequently received the daily double.

I always felt I was a guest at someone else’s school. But by the end of my six years, I started to have fun with it. I was tasked with doing the introductions at our annual debate banquet, where I shared the dais with our school priest and English headmaster. Neither looked particularly overjoyed when I began my comments with “seated on the bima tonight” and then introduced each member of the debate team by their synagogue affiliation. Except for the one Korean guy every debate team had. He, I said, was here representing Fromin’s Delicatessen.

In college in the Northeast, I definitely went through a phase where I did everything I could to pass. Not just as Gentile, but as Mayflower, old money Gentile. I had the Bean Bluchers and the Norwegian fisherman’s sweater and the shiksa girlfriend from Miss Porter’s. I played touch football with fraternity brothers overlooking the water in Newport while wearing an Oxford shirt. But this was always an ill-fitting costume. As they say, you can’t hide the hook. That’s my nose. That’s what the hook is referring to.
I even once tried dying my hair blond, using a homemade brew of lemon juice, Sun-In and peroxide. Instead of blond, I spent a summer with a bright orange mane looking like the evil spawn of Danny Bonaduce, Carrot Top and Bozo the Clown.

In reality, it’s hard to pass as a Jamestown colonist or a laconic Wyoming sheriff with the last name “Behar.” My wife and I used to joke that if our kids ever wanted to run for the Senate, they could drop the “Behar” and run as “Samantha Robins” or “Jack Andrews.” The latter could also save the State Department from an impending terrorist attack in a Michael Bay movie. Then again, this now feels like a concern from a bygone era. Things have changed so quickly in this country that no name feels more quintessentially American than “Barack Hussein Obama.”

As an adult, I’ve embraced my Jewishness if not a deep religiosity. Both my kids attend Jewish day school, yet I’ve never been to Israel. “But who’s watching my trees” I ask every time to repeated non-laughter. I call 1000 Island , “Russian dressing” and still see Woody Allen movies mostly out of cultural obligation. I know the V’ahavta by heart (or off-book as I call it). But then again, I still also know the Lord’s Prayer–the gift of Tuesday Episcopal chapel that keeps on giving.

We consider ourselves a typical American family. Our last big trip was to Charleston. Before that, we went to Austin. Super American, right? But then, after a week of eating our way through Texas and still in a brisket coma, I was pulled out of line at the Austin airport for questioning. For no discernible reason, beyond my swarthy complexion and swarthy outlook.

It’s possible I’m getting more Jewish as I age. Or the corollary, all old people seem Jewish. Last week, I smuggled a baggy of Trader Joe’s lox into my local bagel store so I wouldn’t have to pay full retail. When did I become everyone’s grandmother?

So what is the point of all this identity navel-gazing. Two thoughts come to mind. The first is about the Jewish-American experience. And how not everyone’s is the same. We’ve grown accustomed to seeing 20th century Jewry through the same herring-tinted filter. It’s always Ashknazi. It always runs through Brooklyn. And it always seems to be narrated by the same talking heads. We get it, Larry King liked egg creams, stickball and sneaking into Ebbets Field. But my experience has just as many bumuelas and biscochos as tongue sandwiches on rye. And my experience has already been supplanted by the new Jewish immigrant stories from Iran, South Africa, Russia and Israel.

My second observation is how I/we fit into the overall tapestry of American life. Every immigrant in every group always faces the give and take of full assimilation versus holding on to precious customs. There are days when I’m well aware that I am a Jew in a non-Jewish society. Try spending a day at Disneyland. (It’s also helpful if you want to feel anorexic). But on most days, I just blend in and don’t think about it–a proposition I’m well aware not all groups get to achieve with equal ease. But as I write this final paragraph in the Northridge Starbucks, the only non-Asian or Latino in the room, I see that we all just want to be thought of as American.

This Teen Is Almost 8 Feet Tall — And Still Growing

At 7 feet 8 inches, Broc Brown definitely sticks out in a crowd, and he’s only going to get bigger.

Brown’s family knew something was up at a young age: He was 5-foot-2 in kindergarten, according to his mother, Darci Elliot.

“When he got into middle school he was around 6 feet tall, and by high school he was 7 feet tall,” Elliot told Barcroft TV. “It’s a genetic disorder and there’s nothing that can stop him from growing – I don’t know if he will ever stop.”

Brown, 19, grows an astounding six inches a year because of a rare genetic disorder called Sotos syndrome, or cerebral gigantism. The condition reportedly affects 1 in 14,000 newborns, but the National Institutes of Health says the number may be closer to 1 in 5,000, since not everyone who has it is properly diagnosed.

Kids with the syndrome tend to grow quickly in younger years and have unusually large heads, but their adult height is often in the normal range. That makes Brown a rarity among rarities.

Other symptoms include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and an explosive temper.

Brown has both, his mother said.

“When he gets mad, he’s mad. It wouldn’t take him two seconds to pop a hole in the wall ― it could be very dangerous if he wasn’t on medication and able to be calmed,” Elliot told Barcroft TV. “But overall, he is a big softie, his heart is as big as his body.”

Brown is in constant pain because of other issues, including curvature of the spine and narrowing of the spinal cord. He was born with only one kidney, which means he can’t take painkillers.

“It kind of feels like a big tennis racket has gone through my back,” he told Barcroft.

Dr. John Pappas, director of NYU Clinical Genetic Services and associate professor of pediatrics at NYU Langone Medical Center, said there is no cure for Sotos syndrome and treatments address only the symptoms, not the cause.

“We don’t have a specific kind of medication that can control the overgrowth of protein,” Pappas told HuffPost.

Pappas, who hasn’t treated Brown, said factors beyond Sotos syndrome may be causing Brown’s non-stop growth.

The teen’s trajectory has been financially challenging for his family.

“There’s a lot of things that are hard, like finding shoes for him, finding clothes,” Elliot told local station WILX-TV in 2013. Nike helped by donating a pair of size 24 shoes.

Brown’s size has helped him reach a certain height of fame.

Previously, he held the Guinness World Record for tallest male under the age of 18. He outgrew that honor when he reached legal age. Kevin Bradford of Doral, Florida, who stands 7-feet-1, now holds that honor.

But if Brown continues to grow, he could soon be looking down at 8-foot-3 Sultan Kösen, the current owner of the tallest living person honor. Kösen stopped growing in 2012 at the tender age of 29.

Brown doesn’t seem concerned about being the world’s tallest man. He’d be happy with a normal, comfortable existence.

“I hopefully want to work for a sporting goods store or something like that, a cashier or something,” he said. “I just want to have my own job.”
