Read President Obama’s Full Speech To The DNC

President Barack Obama offered a moving vision of optimism for the United States on Wednesday night at the Democratic National Convention and made it clear why he believes Hillary Clinton is the person best-suited to carry on his legacy in the White House.

Read the text of Obama’s speech, as prepared for delivery, below:

Hello, America.

Twelve years ago tonight, I addressed this convention for the very first time.

You met my two little girls, Malia and Sasha – now two amazing young women who just fill me with pride.  You fell for my brilliant wife and partner Michelle, who’s made me a better father and a better man; who’s gone on to inspire our nation as First Lady; and who somehow hasn’t aged a day.

I know the same can’t be said for me.  My girls remind me all the time.  Wow, you’ve changed so much, daddy.

And it’s true – I was so young that first time in Boston.  Maybe a little nervous addressing such a big crowd.  But I was filled with faith; faith in America – the generous, bighearted, hopeful country that made my story – indeed, all of our stories – possible.

A lot’s happened over the years.  And while this nation has been tested by war and recession and all manner of challenge – I stand before you again tonight, after almost two terms as your President, to tell you I am even more optimistic about the future of America.

How could I not be – after all we’ve achieved together?

After the worst recession in 80 years, we’ve fought our way back.  We’ve seen deficits come down, 401(k)s recover, an auto industry set new records, unemployment reach eight-year lows, and our businesses create 15 million new jobs.

After a century of trying, we declared that health care in America is not a privilege for a few, but a right for everybody.  After decades of talk, we finally began to wean ourselves off foreign oil, and doubled our production of clean energy.

We brought more of our troops home to their families, and delivered justice to Osama bin Laden.  Through diplomacy, we shut down Iran’s nuclear weapons program, opened up a new chapter with the people of Cuba, and brought nearly 200 nations together around a climate agreement that could save this planet for our kids.

We put policies in place to help students with loans; protect consumers from fraud; and cut veteran homelessness almost in half.  And through countless acts of quiet courage, America learned that love has no limits, and marriage equality is now a reality across the land.

By so many measures, our country is stronger and more prosperous than it was when we started.

And through every victory and every setback, I’ve insisted that change is never easy, and never quick; that we wouldn’t meet all of our challenges in one term, or one presidency, or even in one lifetime.

So tonight, I’m here to tell you that yes, we still have more work to do.  More work to do for every American still in need of a good job or a raise, paid leave or a decent retirement; for every child who needs a sturdier ladder out of poverty or a world-class education; for everyone who hasn’t yet felt the progress of these past seven and a half years.  We need to keep making our streets safer and our criminal justice system fairer; our homeland more secure, and our world more peaceful and sustainable for the next generation.  We’re not done perfecting our union, or living up to our founding creed – that all of us are created equal and free in the eyes of God.

That work involves a big choice this November.  Fair to say, this is not your typical election.  It’s not just a choice between parties or policies; the usual debates between left and right.  This is a more fundamental choice – about who we are as a people, and whether we stay true to this great American experiment in self-government.

Look, we Democrats have always had plenty of differences with the Republican Party, and there’s nothing wrong with that; it’s precisely this contest of ideas that pushes our country forward.

But what we heard in Cleveland last week wasn’t particularly Republican – and it sure wasn’t conservative.  What we heard was a deeply pessimistic vision of a country where we turn against each other, and turn away from the rest of the world.  There were no serious solutions to pressing problems – just the fanning of resentment, and blame, and anger, and hate.

And that is not the America I know.

The America I know is full of courage, and optimism, and ingenuity.  The America I know is decent and generous.  Sure, we have real anxieties – about paying the bills, protecting our kids, caring for a sick parent.  We get frustrated with political gridlock, worry about racial divisions; are shocked and saddened by the madness of Orlando or Nice.  There are pockets of America that never recovered from factory closures; men who took pride in hard work and providing for their families who now feel forgotten; parents who wonder whether their kids will have the same opportunities we had.

All that is real.  We’re challenged to do better; to be better.  But as I’ve traveled this country, through all fifty states; as I’ve rejoiced with you and mourned with you, what I’ve also seen, more than anything, is what is right with America.  I see people working hard and starting businesses; people teaching kids and serving our country.  I see engineers inventing stuff, and doctors coming up with new cures.  I see a younger generation full of energy and new ideas, not constrained by what is, ready to seize what ought to be.

Most of all, I see Americans of every party, every background, every faith who believe that we are stronger together – black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American; young and old; gay, straight, men, women, folks with disabilities, all pledging allegiance, under the same proud flag, to this big, bold country that we love.

That’s the America I know.  And there is only one candidate in this race who believes in that future, and has devoted her life to it; a mother and grandmother who’d do anything to help our children thrive; a leader with real plans to break down barriers, blast through glass ceilings, and widen the circle of opportunity to every single American – the next President of the United States, Hillary Clinton.

Now, eight years ago, Hillary and I were rivals for the Democratic nomination.  We battled for a year and a half.  Let me tell you, it was tough, because Hillary’s tough.  Every time I thought I might have that race won, Hillary just came back stronger.

But after it was all over, I asked Hillary to join my team.  She was a little surprised, but ultimately said yes – because she knew that what was at stake was bigger than either of us.  And for four years, I had a front-row seat to her intelligence, her judgment, and her discipline.  I came to realize that her unbelievable work ethic wasn’t for praise or attention – that she was in this for everyone who needs a champion.  I understood that after all these years, she has never forgotten just who she’s fighting for.

Hillary’s still got the tenacity she had as a young woman working at the Children’s Defense Fund, going door to door to ultimately make sure kids with disabilities could get a quality education.

She’s still got the heart she showed as our First Lady, working with Congress to help push through a Children’s Health Insurance Program that to this day protects millions of kids.

She’s still seared with the memory of every American she met who lost loved ones on 9/11, which is why, as a Senator from New York, she fought so hard for funding to help first responders; why, as Secretary of State, she sat with me in the Situation Room and forcefully argued in favor of the mission that took out bin Laden.

You know, nothing truly prepares you for the demands of the Oval Office.  Until you’ve sat at that desk, you don’t know what it’s like to manage a global crisis, or send young people to war.  But Hillary’s been in the room; she’s been part of those decisions.  She knows what’s at stake in the decisions our government makes for the working family, the senior citizen, the small business owner, the soldier, and the veteran.  Even in the middle of crisis, she listens to people, and keeps her cool, and treats everybody with respect.  And no matter how daunting the odds; no matter how much people try to knock her down, she never, ever quits.

That’s the Hillary I know.  That’s the Hillary I’ve come to admire.  And that’s why I can say with confidence there has never been a man or a woman more qualified than Hillary Clinton to serve as President of the United States of America.

And, by the way, in case you were wondering about her judgment, look at her choice of running mate.  Tim Kaine is as good a man, as humble and committed a public servant, as anyone I know.  He will be a great Vice President, and he’ll make Hillary a better President.  Just like my dear friend and brother Joe Biden has made me a better President.

Now, Hillary has real plans to address the concerns she’s heard from you on the campaign trail. She’s got specific ideas to invest in new jobs, to help workers share in their company’s profits, to help put kids in preschool, and put students through college without taking on a ton of debt.  That’s what leaders do.

And then there’s Donald Trump.  He’s not really a plans guy.  Not really a facts guy, either.  He calls himself a business guy, which is true, but I have to say, I know plenty of businessmen and women who’ve achieved success without leaving a trail of lawsuits, and unpaid workers, and people feeling like they got cheated.

Does anyone really believe that a guy who’s spent his 70 years on this Earth showing no regard for working people is suddenly going to be your champion?  Your voice?  If so, you should vote for him.  But if you’re someone who’s truly concerned about paying your bills, and seeing the economy grow, and creating more opportunity for everybody, then the choice isn’t even close.  If you want someone with a lifelong track record of fighting for higher wages, better benefits, a fairer tax code, a bigger voice for workers, and stronger regulations on Wall Street, then you should vote for Hillary Clinton.

And if you’re concerned about who’s going to keep you and your family safe in a dangerous world – well, the choice is even clearer.  Hillary Clinton is respected around the world not just by leaders, but by the people they serve.  She’s worked closely with our intelligence teams, our diplomats, our military. And she has the judgment, the experience, and the temperament to meet the threat from terrorism.  It’s not new to her.  Our troops have pounded ISIL without mercy, taking out leaders, taking back territory.  I know Hillary won’t relent until ISIL is destroyed.  She’ll finish the job – and she’ll do it without resorting to torture, or banning entire religions from entering our country.  She is fit to be the next Commander-in-Chief.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump calls our military a disaster.  Apparently, he doesn’t know the men and women who make up the strongest fighting force the world has ever known.  He suggests America is weak.  He must not hear the billions of men, women, and children, from the Baltics to Burma, who still look to America to be the light of freedom, dignity, and human rights.  He cozies up to Putin, praises Saddam Hussein, and tells the NATO allies that stood by our side after 9/11 that they have to pay up if they want our protection.  Well, America’s promises do not come with a price tag.  We meet our commitments.  And that’s one reason why almost every country on Earth sees America as stronger and more respected today than they did eight years ago.

America is already great.  America is already strong.  And I promise you, our strength, our greatness, does not depend on Donald Trump.

In fact, it doesn’t depend on any one person.  And that, in the end, may be the biggest difference in this election – the meaning of our democracy.

Ronald Reagan called America “a shining city on a hill.”  Donald Trump calls it “a divided crime scene” that only he can fix.  It doesn’t matter to him that illegal immigration and the crime rate are as low as they’ve been in decades, because he’s not offering any real solutions to those issues.  He’s just offering slogans, and he’s offering fear.  He’s betting that if he scares enough people, he might score just enough votes to win this election.

That is another bet that Donald Trump will lose.  Because he’s selling the American people short.  We are not a fragile or frightful people.  Our power doesn’t come from some self-declared savior promising that he alone can restore order.  We don’t look to be ruled.  Our power comes from those immortal declarations first put to paper right here in Philadelphia all those years ago; We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal; that together, We, the People, can form a more perfect union.

That’s who we are.  That’s our birthright – the capacity to shape our own destiny.  That’s what drove patriots to choose revolution over tyranny and our GIs to liberate a continent.  It’s what gave women the courage to reach for the ballot, and marchers to cross a bridge in Selma, and workers to organize and fight for better wages.

America has never been about what one person says he’ll do for us.  It’s always been about what can be achieved by us, together, through the hard, slow, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately enduring work of self-government.

And that’s what Hillary Clinton understands.  She knows that this is a big, diverse country, and that most issues are rarely black and white.  That even when you’re 100 percent right, getting things done requires compromise.  That democracy doesn’t work if we constantly demonize each other.  She knows that for progress to happen, we have to listen to each other, see ourselves in each other, fight for our principles but also fight to find common ground, no matter how elusive that may seem.

Hillary knows we can work through racial divides in this country when we realize the worry black parents feel when their son leaves the house isn’t so different than what a brave cop’s family feels when he puts on the blue and goes to work; that we can honor police and treat every community fairly.  She knows that acknowledging problems that have festered for decades isn’t making race relations worse – it’s creating the possibility for people of good will to join and make things better.

Hillary knows we can insist on a lawful and orderly immigration system while still seeing striving students and their toiling parents as loving families, not criminals or rapists; families that came here for the same reasons our forebears came – to work, and study, and make a better life, in a place where we can talk and worship and love as we please.  She knows their dream is quintessentially American, and the American Dream is something no wall will ever contain.

It can be frustrating, this business of democracy.  Trust me, I know.  Hillary knows, too.  When the other side refuses to compromise, progress can stall.  Supporters can grow impatient, and worry that you’re not trying hard enough; that you’ve maybe sold out.

But I promise you, when we keep at it; when we change enough minds; when we deliver enough votes, then progress does happen.  Just ask the twenty million more people who have health care today.  Just ask the Marine who proudly serves his country without hiding the husband he loves.  Democracy works, but we gotta want it – not just during an election year, but all the days in between.

So if you agree that there’s too much inequality in our economy, and too much money in our politics, we all need to be as vocal and as organized and as persistent as Bernie Sanders’ supporters have been.  We all need to get out and vote for Democrats up and down the ticket, and then hold them accountable until they get the job done.

If you want more justice in the justice system, then we’ve all got to vote – not just for a President, but for mayors, and sheriffs, and state’s attorneys, and state legislators.  And we’ve got to work with police and protesters until laws and practices are changed.

If you want to fight climate change, we’ve got to engage not only young people on college campuses, but reach out to the coal miner who’s worried about taking care of his family, the single mom worried about gas prices.

If you want to protect our kids and our cops from gun violence, we’ve got to get the vast majority of Americans, including gun owners, who agree on background checks to be just as vocal and determined as the gun lobby that blocks change through every funeral we hold.  That’s how change will happen.

Look, Hillary’s got her share of critics.  She’s been caricatured by the right and by some folks on the left; accused of everything you can imagine – and some things you can’t.  But she knows that’s what happens when you’re under a microscope for 40 years.  She knows she’s made mistakes, just like I have; just like we all do.  That’s what happens when we try.  That’s what happens when you’re the kind of citizen Teddy Roosevelt once described – not the timid souls who criticize from the sidelines, but someone “who is actually in the arena…who strives valiantly; who errs…[but] who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement.”

Hillary Clinton is that woman in the arena.  She’s been there for us – even if we haven’t always noticed.  And if you’re serious about our democracy, you can’t afford to stay home just because she might not align with you on every issue.  You’ve got to get in the arena with her, because democracy isn’t a spectator sport.  America isn’t about “yes he will.”  It’s about “yes we can.”  And we’re going to carry Hillary to victory this fall, because that’s what the moment demands.

You know, there’s been a lot of talk in this campaign about what America’s lost – people who tell us that our way of life is being undermined by pernicious changes and dark forces beyond our control.  They tell voters there’s a “real America” out there that must be restored.  This isn’t an idea that started with Donald Trump.  It’s been peddled by politicians for a long time – probably from the start of our Republic.

And it’s got me thinking about the story I told you twelve years ago tonight, about my Kansas grandparents and the things they taught me when I was growing up.  They came from the heartland; their ancestors began settling there about 200 years ago.  They were Scotch-Irish mostly, farmers, teachers, ranch hands, pharmacists, oil rig workers.  Hardy, small town folks.  Some were Democrats, but a lot of them were Republicans.  My grandparents explained that they didn’t like show-offs.  They didn’t admire braggarts or bullies.  They didn’t respect mean-spiritedness, or folks who were always looking for shortcuts in life.  Instead, they valued traits like honesty and hard work.  Kindness and courtesy.  Humility; responsibility; helping each other out.

That’s what they believed in.  True things.  Things that last.  The things we try to teach our kids.

And what my grandparents understood was that these values weren’t limited to Kansas.  They weren’t limited to small towns.  These values could travel to Hawaii; even the other side of the world, where my mother would end up working to help poor women get a better life.  They knew these values weren’t reserved for one race; they could be passed down to a half-Kenyan grandson, or a half-Asian granddaughter; in fact, they were the same values Michelle’s parents, the descendants of slaves, taught their own kids living in a bungalow on the South Side of Chicago.  They knew these values were exactly what drew immigrants here, and they believed that the children of those immigrants were just as American as their own, whether they wore a cowboy hat or a yarmulke; a baseball cap or a hijab.

America has changed over the years.  But these values my grandparents taught me – they haven’t gone anywhere.  They’re as strong as ever; still cherished by people of every party, every race, and every faith.  They live on in each of us.  What makes us American, what makes us patriots, is what’s in here.  That’s what matters.  That’s why we can take the food and music and holidays and styles of other countries, and blend it into something uniquely our own.  That’s why we can attract strivers and entrepreneurs from around the globe to build new factories and create new industries here.  That’s why our military can look the way it does, every shade of humanity, forged into common service.  That’s why anyone who threatens our values, whether fascists or communists or jihadists or homegrown demagogues, will always fail in the end.

That’s America.  Those bonds of affection; that common creed.  We don’t fear the future; we shape it, embrace it, as one people, stronger together than we are on our own.  That’s what Hillary Clinton understands – this fighter, this stateswoman, this mother and grandmother, this public servant, this patriot – that’s the America she’s fighting for.

And that’s why I have confidence, as I leave this stage tonight, that the Democratic Party is in good hands.  My time in thisoffice hasn’t fixed everything; as much as we’ve done, there’s still so much I want to do.  But for all the tough lessons I’ve had to learn; for all the places I’ve fallen short; I’ve told Hillary, and I’ll tell you what’s picked me back up, every single time.

It’s been you.  The American people.

It’s the letter I keep on my wall from a survivor in Ohio who twice almost lost everything to cancer, but urged me to keep fighting for health care reform, even when the battle seemed lost.  Do not quit.

It’s the painting I keep in my private office, a big-eyed, green owl, made by a seven year-old girl who was taken from us in Newtown, given to me by her parents so I wouldn’t forget – a reminder of all the parents who have turned their grief into action.

It’s the small business owner in Colorado who cut most of his own salary so he wouldn’t have to lay off any of his workers in the recession – because, he said, “that wouldn’t have been in the spirit of America.”

It’s the conservative in Texas who said he disagreed with me on everything, but appreciated that, like him, I try to be a good dad.

It’s the courage of the young soldier from Arizona who nearly died on the battlefield in Afghanistan, but who’s learned to speak and walk again – and earlier this year, stepped through the door of the Oval Office on his own power, to salute and shake my hand.

It’s every American who believed we could change this country for the better, so many of you who’d never been involved in politics, who picked up phones, and hit the streets, and used the internet in amazing new ways to make change happen.  You are the best organizers on the planet, and I’m so proud of all the change you’ve made possible.

Time and again, you’ve picked me up.  I hope, sometimes, I picked you up, too.  Tonight, I ask you to do for Hillary Clinton what you did for me.  I ask you to carry her the same way you carried me.  Because you’re who I was talking about twelve years ago, when I talked about hope – it’s been you who’ve fueled my dogged faith in our future, even when the odds are great; even when the road is long.  Hope in the face of difficulty; hope in the face of uncertainty; the audacity of hope!

America, you have vindicated that hope these past eight years.  And now I’m ready to pass the baton and do my part as a private citizen.  This year, in this election, I’m asking you to join me – to reject cynicism, reject fear, to summon what’s best in us; to elect Hillary Clinton as the next President of the United States, and show the world we still believe in the promise of this great nation.

Thank you for this incredible journey.  Let’s keep it going.  God bless the United States of America.

Florida Officials Find More Evidence Of Potential Local Zika Spread

By Julie Steenhuysen

CHICAGO (Reuters) – The Florida health department said on Wednesday it was investigating another two cases of Zika not related to travel to a place where the virus is being transmitted, raising the possibility of local Zika transmission in the continental United States.

The Florida health department said it has identified an additional case of Zika in Miami-Dade County, where it was already investigating a possible case of Zika not related to travel, and another case in Broward County, where it has been investigating a non-travel related case.

“Evidence is mounting to suggest local transmission via mosquitoes is going on in South Florida,” said CDC spokesman Tom Skinner said.

“These cases fit similar transmission patterns for mosquito-borne diseases such as Chikungunya that we’ve seen in South Florida in years past.”

To confirm whether Zika is being transmitted locally, epidemiologists must survey households and neighbors within a 150-yard radius around the residence of the person who has Zika, which constitutes the flying range of the mosquitoes that carry the virus.

According to the U.S. Zika response plan, Zika transmission is defined as two or more cases not due to travel or sex with an infected person that occur in a 1-mile diameter over the course of a month. Evidence of the virus in local mosquito populations can also be used to confirm local transmission.

Florida health department officials said investigations into the new cases begins today. The state is urging residents and visitors to participate in requests for urine samples by the department in the areas of investigation. These results will help the department determine the number of people affected.

In addition to the possible cases of non-travel related transmission, Florida on Wednesday reported 328 travel-related cases of Zika. The state is monitoring 53 pregnant women who had Zika infections.

Watch Hillary Clinton Break The Glass Ceiling

The Democratic National Convention began Tuesday night with Hillary Clinton becoming the first female presidential nominee of a major political party, and ended with Clinton breaking the glass ceiling. Sort of.

After showing a montage of the 43 men who have served as president, Clinton addressed the convention via live video, with her face emerging through shards of shattered glass on the video display.

Clinton acknowledged the historical significance of the occasion.

“What an incredible honor that you have given me,” she said in the video. “I can’t believe we just put the biggest crack in that glass ceiling yet. Thanks to you and to everyone who has fought so hard to make this possible. This is really your victory, this is really your night.

“And if there are any little girls out there who stayed up late to watch, let me just say I may become the first woman president, but one of you is next.”

Watch the full video above.

The American Consultants Rx discount prescription cards are to be given free to anyone in need of help curbing the high cost of prescription drugs.

Due to the rising costs, unstable economics, and the mounting cost of prescriptions, American Consultants Rx Inc. (ACRX) a.k.a (ACIRX) an Atlanta based company was born in 2004. The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. They also possess no eligibility requirements, no forms to fill out, or expiration date as well .One card will take care of a whole family. Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. Please include name (if organization please include organization and contact name),mailing address, designate Spanish or English, amount of cards requested, and telephone number.

American Consultants Rx is working diligently to assist as many people and organizations as possible. It should be noted that while many other organizations and companies place a cost on their money saving cards, American Consultants Rx does not believe a cost should be applied, just to assist our fellow Americans. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

Your participation — and readership — is much appreciated.

Now, on to today’s article…

(Questions have been modified for clarity and space.)

I need help breaking a cycle of behavior my family is stuck in. To explain, I’ll need to start with events from three years ago.

A that time, my younger sister, who was turning 18, was the victim of a violent crime that left her hospitalized. While she was in the hospital, our parents died, also as a result of violence.

Fast-forward to present day, and my sister, now in her early 20s, is in prison. This is her second trip there for drug-related offenses.

Given this situation, telephone calls with extended family members have become unbearable, because they follow the same script: They ask if I’ve heard how my sister is doing, and when I answer, they then launch into this whole thing about how they feel uncomfortable having a relationship with her, and how I should stay away from her too. This happens every time, without fail, often before they’ll ask how I’m doing.

This is not only frustrating but painful. I manage to go most days without thinking about the past, and I consider that a major victory. But having it brought up again just rips the scab off.

What I’ve tried to make my relatives understand is that it isn’t easy for me to write off my sister. She has no support system and is my last living immediate family member. But it doesn’t seem to matter.

I’m confused and frustrated, and I just want to break this pattern. What should I say to them?
–SatinSpectre; Marysville, OH

You should say everything you just said here: that you’re not going to abandon your sister; that these conversations are opening old wounds; and that something has to change.

I don’t know how many relatives you’re having these conversations with, but I’d make your stance clear to all of them. Pick the medium — phone call, email, whatever — that will allow you to express yourself directly and completely. Tell them that while you want them in your life (assuming you do), their presence is doing more harm than good.

If they care about and respect you, they’ll listen. And once they do, there’s a progression you can follow to ensure they continue to.

First, if they bring up your sister in the future, cut them off immediately, reminding them that’s not a path you want to go down. Don’t let their transgression pass without acknowledgement. It’s like correcting a dog that’s humping your teddy bear — you have to correct them in the moment.

Do this enough, and it should (steadily) regulate their behavior. If it doesn’t, at some point, you’ll want to consider building stronger boundaries. And that might mean cutting off contact completely.

I’m guessing the last thing you want to do is lose more family, but when you think about it, if things don’t change, why would you want to keep talking to these people? What good comes from it? They ignore your wishes and inflict nothing but pain and heartache. How is that helping you?

That’s a last-resort option, of course, but one worth stashing in your back pocket. Because what’s most important is that you do what’s best for you.

Between your sister’s destruction and your parents’ passing, you’ve been dealt a hand that could be generously described as devastating. And while you consider it a “major victory” that you rarely think about the past, that doesn’t mean your past didn’t happen and that it can no longer impact you.

It is impacting you, if in no other way than sabotaging your relationships with your extended family. It’s understandable that you don’t want to talk about it with them, but please talk about it with someone.

I’m no expert, but the aftermath of this trauma has got to be rolling around your psyche, affecting how you go through life. You wouldn’t be human if it weren’t. It’s a ticking time bomb, and the best thing you can do is start defusing it before it blows up.

What Every Parent Needs To Know About Their Kid’s Respiratory Habits

Part of Your Smile, Your Health™ Series, a division of Sleep Fitness, LLC
Co-authored by Keelyn Ross

What are the benefits of nasal breathing?

There is a right way to breathe and a wrong way to breathe. The right way is through the nose, the wrong way is through the mouth. Nasal breathing benefits the body on multiple levels because the nose is super equipped to process incoming air. The nose has a built-in humidifier and filtration system, so when air enters through the nasal passages, it’s warmed and moistened. It is also equipped to sense and destroy harmful bacteria before it enters the body. This means the respiratory system is being supplied with high quality air, which leads to cellular health. Conversely, the mouth will not purify the air before entering the body such that higher amounts of carbon dioxide create a toxic environment. Mouth breathing also causes a lack of oxygen to the brain, which could lead to underdevelopment, and possibly sensory or auditory disorders, such as autism or attention deficit disorder (ADD). This is why it is paramount for everyone, especially new parents, to understand the importance of their child forming good breathing habits.

What are the long-term consequences of chronic mouth breathing?

If someone develops a mouth breathing habit during their developmental years, they are unknowingly programming their body to have a small, set back jaw, a tiny chin and a long face. This is because bones grow in the position they’re ‘trained to’. If the mouth is open, the entire bone and neuromuscular development follows in suit. Besides aesthetic considerations, that same person most likely suffers from temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), commonly referred to as TMJ, meaning their upper and lower jaw do not close in a balanced fashion. This often leads to crooked teeth, chronic headaches and respiratory distress.

5 Characteristics of Mouth Breathing

1. Small & weak looking jaw
2. Forward head posture
3. Lip incompetency (unable to seal)
4. Small, dysfunctional nostrils
5. Underdeveloped or set back jaw

Are there at-home steps parents can take to ensure their child breathes through their nose?

Yes! Make sure they do not suck their thumb, clench or grind their teeth. You can also incorporate a technique developed by Dr. K. Buteyko called mouth taping, where surgical paper tape is placed over the mouth while sleeping, ensuring the child is breathing through their nose at night. There are also a variety of yoga breathing exercises that focus on correct and controlled breathing. Last but not least, teaming up with a myofunctional orofacial therapist can teach your child exercises they can do at home.

Note: Please consult with your healthcare physician before moving forward with any medical advice.

What about the kids who suffer from chronic sinus infections?

Board-certified otolaryngologists who sub-specialize in sleep medicine will assess the respiratory needs of the child and advise the best course of action for them to adequately breathe. Board-certified dentists who sub-specialize in sleep medicine will also be able to assess the anatomy and function of the child’s craniofacial development and offer treatment solutions. Some dentists have in-house myofunctional orofacial therapists who ensure the child’s neuromuscular development is on par with correct anatomical functioning.

The Triple Whammy Cure: The Breakthrough Women’s Health Program for Feeling Good Again in 3 Weeks

Body and mind beware: relentless stress, shifty hormones, and dwindling serotonin spell big trouble for the idle. Blending conventional and alternative methods to squash their threat, Dr. David Edelberg presents The Triple Whammy Cure, a comprehensive plan for lifelong physical and mental well-being. Edelberg’s work aims to help women, especially, who suffer from moderate but constant depression, fatigue, achy joints, and stress–the type that hangs around for years before raising red flags at the doctor’s office. Through his three-week-long kick start plan, readers learn how to eat better, incorporate exercise, relaxation techniques and natural supplements into their lifestyles, and how to boost their mood-lifting serotonin levels. Forget weightloss plans; Edelberg says better health results from minding the whammy. Similar to Dr. Christiane Northrup’s work on women’s health, The Triple Whammy Cure also explores disorders that result when sufferers ignore nagging symptoms. Anxiety, Fibromylagia, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), and the full gamut of menstrual issues (from PMS to menopause) each receive Edelberg’s full attention as he illuminates connections to triple whammy causes and prescriptions for relieving discomfort. Food’s role is to nourish; whole foods and portion control are key to quelling symptoms. His sound information offers help to all types–from those who work better in groups to t

Bernie Sanders To Supporters: It’s Hillary Or Bust

PHILADELPHIA ― Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) walked into the Wells Fargo Center on Monday night with a tough assignment he never wanted: bringing his passionate but frustrated supporters under the banner of Hillary Clinton, a politician he had sharply criticized for the past six months.

Until Sanders spoke, the first day of the 2016 Democratic National Convention had been dominated by conflict, with Sanders supporters leading anti-Clinton protests around Philadelphia’s city hall and haranguing delegates as they entered the arena ― named, some noted, for a bank that Sanders wants to break up. Chants of “Bernie! Bernie!” broke out during the event’s opening prayer, and even Sanders’ closest ideological ally in the Senate, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, had to speak through sporadic protest chants during her speech just moments before Sanders’ own moment in the limelight.

Sanders quickly transformed the evening into a final, fevered hurrah for the political revolution that had not quite proved strong enough to win him the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. The tension that had permeated the arena for much of the evening morphed into a celebration as Sanders heralded his supporters and detailed the policy changes his team had won in the Democratic Party’s platform.

“This election is about ending the 40-year decline of our middle class, the reality that 47 million men, women and children live in poverty,” Sanders said. “It is about understanding that if we do not transform our economy, our younger generation will likely have a lower standard of living then their parents. … This election is about ending the grotesque level of income and wealth inequality in our country.”

He praised his supporters and the “unprecedented” 8 million individual contributors to his campaign. “Anyone know what that average contribution was?”

Primed for the line, the audience eagerly roared back in unison: “Twenty-seven dollars!”

But after hitting on the standard themes he had wooed his supports with over the previous year, Sanders shifted his approach, describing Clinton as a committed champion of those very issues. He went item by item through issues he and Clinton have both elevated and Republicans have avoided addressing: college debt, the criminal justice system, raising the minimum wage, climate change.

Both candidates, he said, believe in coming together “to create the kind of country we all know we can become.” Sanders promised Clinton would fight to make sure every working American had a living wage, and said she would appoint Supreme Court justices that would overturn the Supreme Court’s unpopular Citizen’s United decision.

“Hillary Clinton must become the next president of the United States,” Sanders said. “The choice is not even close.”

After throwing his weight behind Clinton, Sanders acknowledged their differences.

“It is no secret that Hillary Clinton and I disagree on a number of issues,” Sanders said. “But I am happy to tell you that at the Democratic Platform Committee there was a significant coming together between the two campaigns and we produced, by far, the most progressive platform in the history of the Democratic Party. Among many other strong provisions, the Democratic Party now calls for breaking up the major financial institutions on Wall Street and the passage of a 21st century Glass-Steagall Act. It also calls for strong opposition to job-killing free trade agreements like the TPP.”

The crowd burst into chants of “No TPP! No TPP!” at the line, and Sanders ad-libbed an addition, calling for the crowd to ensure that the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a trade pact negotiated by President Barack Obama, does not receive a vote in the lame-duck session of Congress.

“Our job now is to see that platform implemented by a Democratic Senate, a Democratic House and a Hillary Clinton presidency ― and I am going to do everything I can to make that happen,” he added.

It was all the Democratic National Committee could have asked for.

The Big Idea Behind Integrative Medicine

2016-07-25-1469470698-7845448-Hippocrates.jpg

Wherever the art of Medicine is loved, there is also a love of Humanity.

Hippocrates

Integrative medicine is an ecosystem of support for pursuing your own health and well-being. Inside that ecosystem is someone who cares about you.
Integrative medicine is emerging from a successful history of treating physical ailments that often eluded Western modalities of care to become an ecosystem of support for health and wellness. Possibly the most visible sign of this development is the increasing attention of integrative medicine to primary care, where prevention and regard for the whole person is most critical.

What distinguishes integrative medicine as an approach is that it distances itself from the traditional model of a patient dependent on an expert. Rather, it embraces a genuine clinical partnership in which both the patient and the care provider have something to offer in pursuit of the patient’s optimal health. The care provider embodies not only clinical knowledge, which is the result of his or her training, but also qualities not always associated with experts. These include curiosity, emotional support, collaboration, humor, and the ability to articulate options and alternatives without judgment. Patients are participants as well, offering knowledge of what has worked for them in the past, providing information that can’t be quantified on a medical report, and finding meaning and purpose in their response to the challenges faced when confronted by illness.

The power of integrative medicine comes from acknowledging the multiple dimensions that can cause illness and an equal respect for the various modalities that can address healing and cure. Freed from a traditional repertoire of either pharmacological or surgical solutions (pills or knife), integrative medicine practitioners have expanded the treatment landscape to include nutrition, bodywork, chiropractic, mindfulness-based stress reduction, integrative psychotherapy, and ancient healing practices such as Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. From exploring the optimal chemistry for our digestive tract to treating autoimmune conditions to finding novel ways to address trauma, integrative medicine is showing us a whole new way to educate ourselves about health and take responsibility for our own well-being.

The emerging field of integrative care is as much an idea as a set of practices. The idea is of an ecosystem of support, an intersecting set of relationships that address the whole human package — body, mind, heart, and soul. And at the center of this ecosystem of support are people who care about you. The ability to be seen by a team of providers and staff who value you as a whole person is a central premise permeating all other techniques and practices.

I am reminded of the support that the poet W.H. Auden gave Dr. Oliver Sacks when he was composing Awakenings, a book about his work with a group of patients who had been in a decades-long sleep and were now coming back to consciousness. Auden wrote: “You’re going to have to go beyond the clinical. … Be metaphorical, be mystical, be whatever you need.” I find here the implication that it is our deep regard for the human condition that moves us beyond the complacent and routine. It is in our profound respect for service to others that we touch mystery and wholeness. At the heart of integrative medicine is a bold invitation to go beyond the clinical, into regions that capture our hearts and imagination. Caring is fundamental. Nothing else really matters without love as an organizing principle. Or as one patient I know told her physician, “I just want someone who gives a damn.”

Caring relationships can and should be with our care providers, but they must also be evident in our social networks, our family, and our community, and in our relationship with nature. Beyond the particular type of care we receive is a broader view of health that includes the social and relational. Caring is about how we manifest love in the form of looking out for each other, witnessing, supporting, provoking, and optimizing our capacity to face health and illness, life and death, with dignity. Wise old Hippocrates had it right: Where the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanity.

I had the opportunity to talk about all this with Dr. Jeff Draisin, co-medical director of the Institute for Health and Healing. IHH operates a network of clinics in Northern California and has pioneered integrative medicine practice there for nearly 25 years. Here are seven distinctions he articulated about the emerging field of integrative care. I think he captures something here of essence, particular themes that direct our attention to what matters most and the attributes that together make a whole.

Integrative care does the following:

  • It shifts our understanding of care from a focus on illness and shortcomings to a focus on well-being, personal growth, and transformation.
  • It cares for the whole person by addressing mind, body, and spirit as three interacting elements that together result in health and well-being.
  • It helps individuals craft healthy relationships with their physical bodies, mental outlook, and emotional well-being. Beyond fitness and exercise is the relationship we have with our whole self.
  • It treats nutrition — what we put in our body — as medicine. Beyond diets and supplements is an understanding of what helps our body to feel vital and how best to decrease the effects of toxins.
  • It embraces the latest discoveries of neuroscience and mind-related health for personal well-being — from mindfulness stress reduction to the benefits of awe and wonder.
  • It creates a true partnership that joins the best of Western medicine with ancient healing traditions and complementary modalities. The guiding intent is to restore harmony and address imbalances that detract from optimal health.
  • It values psychological and spiritual forces as food for the soul. Feeling valued, having purpose, and finding meaning are all essential elements of healing and health.

If we pursue health practices and policies along these lines, we will transform health care and bring the art of caring into the heart of medicine.

California City Bans Deceptive Ads By Anti-Abortion Pregnancy Clinics

OAKLAND, Calif. ― The city council here has tightened regulations around pregnancy clinics that try to fool prospective patients with advertisements falsely suggesting that they perform abortions.

The ordinance, passed last week, makes Oakland the second U.S. city to target advertising by so-called crisis pregnancy centers that mask an anti-abortion agenda, according to organizations promoting abortion rights. San Francisco passed a similar ordinance in 2011.

Some such clinics have used billboards and online ads to trick women into thinking that they perform abortions or offer other emergency contraceptive care, according to Amy Everitt, NARAL Pro-Choice California director. She said she’s troubled that searching Google for information about abortions in Oakland brings up results for nearby centers that don’t provide the service.

“When women are seeking reproductive health care, it is time-sensitive and urgent,” said Everitt. “When you put an entity or organization in the way that’s specifically targeting them to deceive them into wasting their time and delay them from accessing other care, what that creates for the women and families of California is a public harm.”

Anti-abortion centers, also known as limited-service pregnancy centers, outnumber Planned Parenthood’s 115 clinics in California, a Planned Parenthood spokeswoman said. An exact count is difficult because many centers are not registered with authorities, and they often change names. A list compiled by California ProLife Council includes 190 crisis pregnancy centers.

The problem extends to websites that include inaccurate medical information about pregnancies, or that overstate the dangers of abortions and the morning-after pill. Oakland officials representing city council and the city attorney highlighted passages on OptionOnline.org, which refers women to crisis pregnancy centers in the Bay Area, as the kind of misleading medical advice that might run afoul of the law.

“Many pregnancies result in miscarriage so an abortion might not be necessary,” the website says. Another passage warns that the Plan B and emergency contraception pills “can actually hurt you if you take them while you are pregnant.”

Violators can be fined and sued by Oakland’s city attorney if they refuse to take down contested ads.

Support Circle, a licensed medical clinic with three sites in the Bay Area, including one in Oakland, is one facility that has relied on deceptive advertising to shade its anti-abortion stance, according to Oakland officials.

“Support Circle is a safe place where you can sort out your thoughts and feelings in a non-pressured environment, and make healthy, well-informed choices in line with your core values,” the clinic website says. The organization counsels against abortion.

“Clients can meet with medical professionals and receive information about early pregnancy symptoms, the morning after pill, abortion, the abortion pill, emergency contraception, Plan B, Ella, pregnancy and drugs, pregnancy and smoking, pregnancy and alcohol, and miscarriage,” the Support Circle website continues.

Support Circle did not respond to The Huffington Post’s inquiries.

A conservative legal organization that has represented crisis pregnancy centers said Oakland’s new law is flawed. The ordinance assumes women don’t research the services offered at crisis pregnancy centers before going to one, said Brad Dacus, Pacific Justice Institute president.

“My fear is that abortion clinics like Planned Parenthood will succeed in achieving their end goal that women in crises will not receive compassionate counseling to alternatives and that more women will abort their unborn babies,” Dacus said. He said the law was motivated by Planned Parenthood’s desire for more customers.

County health officials encouraged Oakland to pass the law, saying crisis pregnancy centers interfere with prenatal care in other ways. Some of the clinics target residents of low-income neighborhoods and force women to transfer to doctors and clinics 20 weeks to 24 weeks into their pregnancies, when it’s too late to obtain an abortion, according to a June letter from Alameda County Public Health Department officials. Doctors and clinics that pick up these patients have complained that the crisis pregnancy centers delay sharing critical lab results and other medical records, according to the letter.

“We do not have the resources to compete with the misleading advertising of the crisis pregnancy centers,” the letter says.

San Francisco’s law was challenged by an anti-abortion center that contended it violated free speech rights. A federal judge upheld the ordinance in 2015, saying commercial speech can be regulated.

“Oakland respects the activists’ right to express their views and counsel against abortion. If their message is truly compelling, they should have no problem being honest about what they do and do not offer,” City Attorney Barbara Parker said in a statement. “If they refuse to be honest, the City Attorney will have the power to sue violators to hold them accountable.”

Dial Up The Frequency Of Love — It’s All Good

2016-07-22-1469207541-594798-11780058_10153129790107149_3221575478209974355_o.jpg

“The world has gone crazy!”

“People have lost their minds!”

“It’s not a safe place!”

“The world is going to hell in a hand basket!”

SO.MUCH.FEAR.

How about instead of getting sucked up into that vortex, we dial up the frequency of Love?

Yes, there is a lot of upheaval, chaos, if you will. And instead of trying to control it and being afraid of it, we can look at it for what it is:

The perfect unfolding in which many blessings lie. The new paradigm emerging as the old ones crumble.

It’s all good.

Fear, scarcity and lack are not sustainable anymore. That’s why it’s showing up more than ever. It’s fighting for it’s last breath. It’s always been there – all the horrors that are happening around the world – we just know where it lives now.

It’s in our face.

Why?

Because we are waking up!

I learned that in space when light expands and hits darkness, there is initial friction when they meet before light expands some more.

So, shine on and embrace the friction, knowing that on a grander scale, everything is playing out as it should for one simple reason…

To restore balance and harmony.

Does that rub you the wrong way?

Ah, there’s the friction.

Do you want to defend the limitations of being right? After all, there’s so many stories to support why the world has gone mad. Just turn on the news, read the paper, or log in to the social networks.

Instead, dare to Love even when it seems impossible or even when it feels wrong – after all, shouldn’t we be raging when yet another act of violence has been reported across the globe? Doesn’t that show we care? So, how can we love when atrocities are happening around the world?

How can we not?

I do know from experience that Love is the most powerful frequency on the planet and it’s always there because it’s all there is. We are conduits for that frequency. We can at any moment choose to allow Love to flow through us.

Talk about true power.

Ask yourself how it feels and what it looks like to dial up the frequency of Love when, in that moment, you want to react and post away on social media the expression of your rage.

Pause and pay attention to what comes up for you.

I definitely have my reactions to what’s happening in the world and I have my feelings about it. When I’m triggered, I step away and deal with my emotions first. I allow them to show me what it is I’m really upset about.

I check in with myself before I post anything. Am I coming from a place of Love? If not, I do not post.

These are extraordinary times to be living on the planet. Extraordinary times to be choosing Love.

So no matter what’s happening around you, I dare you to dial up the frequency of Love.

And then pay attention to what happens.

Because, as a friend of mine always says, “It’s all good.”

And it is.

Study Finds Drop In Prescription Drugs In Medical Marijuana States

States looking for a way to reduce Medicare spending and prescription drug use may want to turn to legalizing medical marijuana, a new study suggests.

The District of Columbia and the 17 states that had medical marijuana as an alternative to prescription drugs in 2013 saved an estimated total of $ 165.2 million in Medicare program and enrollee spending that year, researchers at the University of Georgia reported in the journal Health Affairs this month.

“The results suggest that if all states had implemented medical marijuana the overall savings to Medicare would have been around $ 468 million,” a press release on the findings stated.

The researchers looked at prescriptions filled by Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (or Part D) enrollees from 2010 to 2013. They then narrowed the prescriptions down to ones that could be substituted with medical marijuana. Those prescriptions were for ailments that included anxiety, depression, glaucoma, nausea, pain, psychosis, seizures, sleep disorders and spasticity.

Their results found that there were fewer prescriptions filled for the majority of those categories. The pain category, for instance, saw a decrease in 1,826 daily doses, while the depression category saw a 265 daily dosage decrease.

As the researchers noted in their release, they specifically looked at glaucoma patients’ use of marijuana.

“It turns out that glaucoma is one of the most Googled searches linked to marijuana, right after pain,” Dr. David Bradford of the university’s School of Public & International Affairs, who co-authored the report, stated in the university’s release.

The eye disease can be extremely painful and lead to blindness for some patients. Those sufferers who use marijuana, however, can experience a 25 percent decrease in eye pressure that’s caused by the condition, according to the release.

The relief provided by marijuana only lasts about 60 minutes, however, and expecting patients to take it once an hour is considered “unrealistic,” they concluded. Because of that, they stated that they fully expected prescription drug use to remain strong for the disease even when marijuana was an available alternative.

As the university’s release notes, “they were not disappointed.”

Though there were fewer drug prescriptions written for the other ailments, the daily doses of prescribed glaucoma medications increased, they stated.

That led them to believe that medical marijuana users are not requesting prescriptions just to enjoy a high, but are basing their decision on medical needs.

“The results suggest people are really using marijuana as medicine and not just using it for recreational purposes,” the study’s lead author, Ashley Bradford, who completed her bachelor’s degree in sociology in May, said in a statement.

Speaking in a recent YouTube interview, Bradford expressed hope “that this research will influence and reform policymaking.”

Decreasing Americans’ use of prescription drugs may not just be of monetary benefit, but depending on the type of drug, could help fight Americans’ addiction to prescription painkillers as well.

The U.S. is in the midst of an opioid overdose epidemic, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 2014 alone, opioids ― including prescription opioid pain relievers and heroin ― killed more than 28,000 people, more than any year on record. At least half of all those deaths involved a prescription opioid.

“We now know that overdoses from prescription opioid pain relievers are a driving factor in the 15-year increase in opioid overdose deaths,” the CDC states on their website. “Since 1999, the amount of prescription opioids sold in the U.S. nearly quadrupled, yet there has not been an overall change in the amount of pain that Americans report.”

Three of the most common prescription drugs involved in opioid overdose deaths were methadone, oxycodone and hydrocodone.

Today, 25 states and Washington, D.C., have some form of legalized medical marijuana.

The List

A little princess makes the greatest of gifts from the simplest of lists. When a neighboring kingdom announces the birth of a royal baby, the Queen of Iddison is thrilled. We shall bring the child splendid gifts, she declares, and then makes a long list of treasures to collect on the way. She smiles as her daughter, little Princess Cassidy, makes a list, too. On the voyage, the Queen checks her list as the royal caravan gathers gems from mountain mines and beasts from deep jungles. Princess Cassidy also checks her list, but collects nothing. At last, the royal caravan arrives laden with riches. But it is only the gifts from Cassidy''s list that make the baby smile its first smile. And the Queen smiles too when she reads it: two kisses (X X) and one hug (0). The List is a poignant tale from a gifted storyteller, full of

Pobre Raza!: Violence, Justice, and Mobilization among Mxico Lindo Immigrants, 1900-1936

Fleeing the social and political turmoil spawned by the Mexican Revolution, massive numbers of Mexican immigrants entered the southwestern United States in the early decades of the twentieth century. But instead of finding refuge, many encountered harsh, anti-Mexican attitudes and violence from an Anglo population frightened by the influx of foreigners and angered by anti-American sentiments in Mexico. This book examines the response of Mexican immigrants to Anglo American prejudice and violence early in the twentieth century. Drawing on archival sources from both sides of the border, Arturo Rosales traces the rise of “Mxico Lindo” nationalism and the efforts of Mexican consuls to help poor Mexican immigrants defend themselves against abuses and flagrant civil rights violations by Anglo citizens, police, and the U.S. judicial system. This research illuminates a dark era in which civilian and police brutality, prejudice in the courtroom, and disproportionate arrest, conviction, and capital punishment rates too often characterized justice for Mexican Americans.

11 Ways To Instantly Connect With Anyone

2016-07-21-1469128595-7816956-HowToInstantlyConnectWithAnyoneHP.jpg

Too many people succumb to the mistaken belief that the ability to connect with others is a natural, unteachable trait that belongs to only a lucky few. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception. In reality, this ability is under your control, and it’s a matter of emotional intelligence (EQ).

Research conducted by Matthew Lieberman at UCLA shows that being social and connecting with others is as fundamental a human need as food, shelter, and water. For example, Lieberman discovered that we feel social pain, such as the loss of a relationship, in the same part of the brain that we feel physical pain.

The primary function of this brain area is to alert us to threats to our survival. It makes you realize how powerful and important social connection is. We’re hard wired to be social creatures.

“The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood.” -Ralph Nichols

MRIs of the brain show that social thinking and analytical thinking involve entirely different neural networks and that they operate something like a seesaw. When you engage in analytical thinking, the social part of your brain quiets down, but as soon as you’re finished, the social network springs back to life.

The social brain is the end of the seesaw where the fat kid sits; it’s our brain’s default setting.

Given that social connection is such a fundamental human need, you’d think that it would be easy to connect with everyone we meet. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Against our own self-interest, we get bogged down by shyness, self-consciousness, cynicism, pride, competitiveness, jealousy, and arrogance.

If you can get that baggage out of the way, you can connect with anyone–even those who are still holding on to their own. Here are some tips that will help you to connect instantly with everyone you meet.

1. Leave a strong first impression. Most people decide whether or not they like you within the first seven seconds of meeting you. They then spend the rest of the conversation internally justifying their initial reaction. This may sound terrifying, but by knowing this, you can take advantage of it to connect with anyone.

First impressions are tied intimately to positive body language. Becoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain they’re positive) will draw people to you like ants to a picnic. Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the person who’s speaking are all forms of positive body language that high-EQ people use to draw others in. Positive body language can make all the difference in a conversation. It’s true that how you say something can be more important than what you say.

2. Be the first to venture beyond the superficial. Our first conversation or two with a new acquaintance tends to be pretty superficial. We portray a careful picture of ourselves, and we stick to nice, safe topics. We talk about the weather and people we know in common and share the most basic details about ourselves. But if you really want to connect with somebody, try upping the ante and revealing the real you. You don’t need to get too personal, but it’s important to let the other person know what you’re passionate about. Most of the time, if you open up, the other person will follow your lead and do the same.

3. Ask good questions. If the other person seems hesitant to open up, encourage them to do so by asking substantial questions. “What do you do?” doesn’t further the relationship nearly as much as, “Why did you choose your profession?” Search for questions that will help you to understand what makes the other person tick, without getting too personal.

4. Learn from them. In the course of his research, Lieberman concluded that our educational system would be much more effective if we tapped into the social side of learning, rather than trying to squash it. For example, the best way to help an eighth-grader struggling with math would be to have him get help from another student. Apply that same principle to your life, and be willing to learn from the person you’re trying to connect with. Not only does that make them feel more bonded to you, it makes them feel important. It also shows that you’re willing to be vulnerable and aren’t too proud to admit that you have much to learn.

5. Don’t make them regret removing the mask. If your new acquaintance does you the honor of opening up, don’t make them regret it. Sarcasm, criticism, or jokes that might make the other person feel judged for what they’ve shared are major faux paus. Instead, empathize with their approach to life, which you can do even if you don’t agree with their beliefs, and then reciprocate by revealing more about yourself.

6. Look for the good in them. Our culture can often predispose us toward cynicism. We seem to focus on finding reasons not to like people instead of reasons to like them. Shut that cynical voice off, and concentrate on looking for the good in a new acquaintance. For one thing, that keeps you from writing someone off too soon, but more importantly, when you expect the best from people, they’re likely to deliver it.

7. Smile. People naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person they’re talking to. If you want people to like you, smile at them during a conversation and they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good about you as a result.

8. Use their name. Your name is an essential part of your identity, and it feels terrific when people use it. You shouldn’t use someone’s name only when you greet them. Research shows that people feel validated when the person they’re speaking with refers to them by name during a conversation. When you meet someone, don’t be afraid to ask their name a second time if you forget it right after you hear it. You’ll need to keep their name handy if you’re going to remember it the next time you see them.

9. Follow the platinum rule. We all know the golden rule, and it’s pretty easy to follow. The platinum rule is harder to follow because it requires us to treat people the way they want to be treated. Not only does doing so make the other person more comfortable–and therefore more likely to open up–but it also proves that you’ve been listening and have really heard what they’ve been telling you. And that shows extra effort on your part.

10. Don’t make it a contest. We’ve all seen the stereotypical sit-com scene where two guys in a bar spend the night trying to one-up each other. The same thing happens when you meet someone new. Their accomplishments and life experience sneak up on you and make you feel the urge to make yourself look just as good (if not better). Doing so may stroke your ego, but it doesn’t help you to connect with them. It keeps you focused on yourself when you should be trying to learn about them and find common ground.

11. Turn off your inner voice. One giant thing that keeps us from connecting with other people is that we don’t really listen. Instead, we’re thinking while the other person is talking. We’re so focused on what we’re going to say next or how what the other person is saying is going to affect us down the road that we fail to hear what’s really being said. The words come through loud and clear, but the meaning is lost.

You must turn off this inner voice if you want to connect deeply with people. So what if you forget what you were going to say or if the conversation moves in a different direction before you have a chance to make your point. If your real goal is to connect with a person, you have to shut off your own soundtrack long enough to focus on what they’re telling you.

Bringing It All Together

The good news is that we’re programmed to connect with each other; we just keep getting in our own way. Try these tips the next time you meet someone new, and watch a superficial conversation turn into a real connection.

How do you connect with people? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Alcohol Is Even Deadlier Than You Think, Study Suggests

A new study suggests that alcohol is a direct cause of cancer in several areas of the body.

The study, published Thursday in the scientific journal Addiction, consists of a major review of 10 years’ worth of studies from several organizations, including the World Cancer Research Fund, the American Institute for Cancer Research and the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

And its conclusions are dire.

Nearly 6 percent of cancer deaths worldwide can be linked to alcohol, including in people who drink light to moderate amounts of alcohol, the study concludes. “From a public health perspective, alcohol is estimated to have caused approximately half a million deaths from cancer in 2012,” wrote study author Jennie Connor, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Otago in New Zealand.

The study determined that there is a strong link between alcohol consumption and cancer in specific areas of the body, such as the liver, colon, esophagus and female breast. There are also causal contributions in other areas such as the prostate, pancreas and skin.

How alcohol causes cancer is not deeply understood, according to the study, but it is thought to depend on the “target organ.” For example, cancers of the throat, mouth and liver can be largely attributed to a carcinogenic compound called acetaldehyde. Salivary acetaldehyde levels have been found to reach high levels when drinking.

Breast tissue is another area that seems to be particularly susceptible to alcohol.

Connor noted the United Kingdom’s Million Women Cohort study, which found that women who drank 70 to 140 grams of alcohol per week experienced a 13 percent increase in breast cancer and a 5 percent increase in total cancer compared to those who drank less than 20 grams per week.

Unfortunately, the amount you drink might not matter all that much. While heavy drinkers have a higher risk of liver, colon and laryngeal cancer than light drinkers, all drinkers have the same risk of mouth, esophagus, breast and pharynx cancer.

Connor also acknowledges that some of the studies she reviewed show that those who drink light to moderate of alcohol have a reduced risk of developing cardiovascular disease than abstainers.

But many epidemiologists agree that research confirms alcohol actually causes cancer, Connor wrote, while the relationship between drinking and heart disease is not as conclusive.

For example, other lifestyle factors beyond alcohol consumption ― such as a person’s healthy behavior and demographic conditions ― typically put abstainers at a higher risk than those who moderately drink. Connor cites a 2005 study that showed 27 out of 30 risk factors for cardiovascular disease were more prevalent in abstainers than moderate drinkers.

“Promotion of health benefits from drinking at moderate levels is seen increasingly as disingenuous or irrelevant in comparison to the increase in risk of a range of cancers,” she wrote in the study.

As a solution to alcohol-attributed cancer, Connor suggests everyone should reduce their alcohol consumption, not just heavy drinkers.

“Population-wide reduction in alcohol consumption will have an important effect on the incidence of [cancer], while targeting the heaviest drinkers alone has limited potential,” she wrote in the study.

However, most people today are hesitant to adapt to the facts. While the majority of the population readily accepts that smoking causes lung cancer, “alcohol’s causal role is perceived to be more complex than tobacco’s,” Connor wrote.

For this reason, simply getting people to stop drinking to prevent cancer ― as many have done in the case of smoking ― is broadly considered unacceptable.

Connor also warns of the backlash that research such as her own may receive from alcohol companies.

“There will be orchestrated attempts to discredit the science and the researchers, and to confuse the public,” she wrote. “The stakes are high for alcohol industries when there is no argument, on current evidence, for a safe level of drinking with respect to cancer.”

Ultimately, alcohol is just one of many factors that can cause cancer, but Connor’s study suggests reducing consumption or even partaking in a “dry period” as steps in the right direction to reduce your risk.

The Reality Show That Never Ends

The law and order guy was on the other night. He talked about how violence was up, killings were high and that there was a need to restore “law and order.” The whole tone of the presentation was almost apocalyptic, “watch out or the world as we know it will be over in five minutes.” The guy then added, “Oh, by the way, I understand all of this and I’m the only one who can fix it.”

Really? Whatever happened to the admonition of being wary of messiahs? This messiah to be is not in the form of an itinerant preacher, rather one who wears expensive suits and strikes a silhouette pose a la Alfred Hitchcock.

The movie “The Truman Show” cleverly chronicled the life of Truman Burbank, a character portrayed by Jim Carrey , who believed that his entire thirty-year life was being broadcast on television.

Somehow, watching the events of this campaign season reminds me of “The Truman Show”. A candidate spins a narrative and promotes a campaign where countless things are said, constant disparaging remarks about individuals and whole classes of people are made and yet incredulously there is little or no substance behind any of the rhetoric.

In the movie “Schindler’s List”, the protagonist character Oscar Schindler is heard to say: “I don’t do the work. I do the presentation.”

But unlike Oscar Schindler who really saved the lives of hundreds of Jewish people who would have met their death in concentration camps without his intervention, the law and order guy doesn’t appear to be doing much work at all. He is, however, very big on the presentation.

Reality television works because it sells a fantasy. Viewers watch these shows in order to get a voyeuristic bird’s eye view of the trials and travails = and vicissitudes of people’s lives, especially the lives of celebrities.

What is unique about this current political season is that it resembles a reality show that never ends. The carnival barker is here displaying his promotional wares and programs for sale. There is a lot of bravado, but there isn’t much of anything else. When the carnival barker gets mad, he then threatens.

Whenever times of economic and political uncertainty emerge, there is usually the accompaniment of anxiety and fear. Needless to say, fear and anxiety have been capitalized greatly by the law and order guy this election season.

Can we proceed as a country that is motivated by continuing hope and promise, certainty and optimism in terms of who we are as a people and nation? I hope we can. The tumult of the carnival midway and the endless reality show we have witnessed should give pause for concern by all.

We need to ask anyone who would be a potential leader for all of us to give us much more than an empty bombastic reality show. Our country and our world need much more concentrated collaborative thought, policy enactment, governance and above all leadership.

May it be so.

WATCH: Refocus (Getting Back on Track)

There are a lot of things going on that are demanding our focus – and take us away from where we can be most powerful and do the most good for ourselves and others. I hope this will help.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Until next time, feel free to tap along with any of the many videos I have on YouTube or the many recordings I have at www.TapWithBrad.com.

The Psychological Reason Conservatives Band Together Faster Than Liberals

When Donald Trump picked the Mulan-hating, Titanic-loving gubernatorial goober Mike Pence to be his vice-presidential pick, he said that it was about “party unity.” And indeed, as the flopping of the Never Trump movement at the Republican National Convention shows, the GOP has indeed rallied around Trump — why else would Ted Cruz get booed offstage for withholding his endorsement?

It’s a fascinating display of what political psychologists have come to call “shared reality theory.” Similar to how some people need certainty more than others, researchers have found that people are more or less motivated to get their beliefs reconfirmed by the people around them. Sharing reality functions as “a sort of social glue,” University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign psychologist Chadly Stern and Stanford University researcher Robb Willer write in a new column for the Washington Post, “without which we would be unable to communicate, work in teams and achieve shared goals.” When you have a strong sense of shared reality, it helps you to come to think that your “beliefs reflect objective reality” and that they’re shared by your friends and family.

Related: If You Want Less Police Violence, Hire More Female Cops

As you may surmise by the way fans of right-wing commentator Rush Limbaugh refer to themselves as “dittoheads,” studies indicate that conservative people have a higher need for “shared reality.” Liberals, on the other hand, tend toward the opposite — rather than wanting to share the same reality with their kin, they’re more motivated to be unique, agreeing with statements like “in group activities, I’m somewhat of a nonconformist,” while conservatives are more likely to agree that it’s important to them to “see the world in a similar way” as others do. And in matters both political (abortion) and nonpolitical (coffee) conservatives are more likely to overestimate how much their beliefs match those of their fellow conservatives, while liberals underestimate how much their beliefs are like other liberals. And guess what: According to Stern’s research, people who report that they think their peers share their beliefs with them are more likely to vote.

Therein lies the difficulty of organizing liberals, which Stern and Willer compare to the “proverbial herding of cats” in their Post column. The liberal impulse to nonconformity may be what drives social progress — but it also makes it harder for the party to unify, the Democratic Party, to be precise. It’s a fascinating irony: Liberals might be theoretically more collectivist, pushing for policy that benefits the public good, but their individualism makes it harder to build a coalition. Just ask your nearest Bernie bro.

The Use and Misuse of Psychiatric Drugs: An Evidence-Based Critique

The Use and Misuse of Psychiatric Drugs: An Evidence-Based Critique

Dr. Paris has written an honest, balanced presentation of the ways in which psychiatric drugs are evaluated and prescribed. He highlights the complexity of the task, the limits of what is known and the mixed picture that research often produces. His conclusions are refreshing because they are built from an even-handed, pragmatic assessment of the empirical evidence. The result is a stimulating look at the world of treatments for emotional disorders that acknowledges the usefulness of both biological and psychosocial explanations where appropriate. His recommendations provide helpful roadmaps for patients, practitioners and researchers alike. The book is sure to serve as a welcome catalyst for the continuing debates about which treatments are likely to produce the best outcomes. —Roger P. Greenberg, Ph.D. Distinguished Professor and Head, Psychology Division Dept. of Psychiatry & Behavioral Science SUNY Upstate Medical University, NY, USA The message of this book is that psychiatrists have some very good drugs, but can expect bad results when they are over-used, prescribed outside of evidence-based indications, or given to the wrong patients. While acknowledging that many current agents are highly effective and have revolutionized the treatment of certain disorders, Joel Paris criticizes their use outside of an evidence base. Too many patients are either over-medicated or are misdiagnosed to justify aggressive treatment. Dr. Paris calls for more government funding of clinical trials to establish, without bias, the effectiveness of these agents. He has written this book for practitioners and trainees to show that scientific evidence supports a more cautious and conservative approach to drug therapy. After describing the history of psychopharmacology, including its early successes, Dr. Paris reviews the relationship between psychiatry and the pharmaceutical industry. This problem has received considerable popular attention in recent years and Dr. Paris documents initiatives to increase transparency and decrease the influence of pharmaceutical marketing on diagnosis and prescribing habits. Dr Paris then examines some major controversies. One is the fact that newer drugs have not been shown to be superior to older agents. Another is that while the number of prescriptions for antidepressants has increased dramatically, meta-analyses show that their value is more limited than previously believed. Still another is the widespread prescription of mood stabilizers and antipsychotic drugs for patients, including children and adolescents, who do not have bipolar illness. Polypharmacy is an especially contentious area: very few drug combinations have been tested in clinical trials, yet many patients end up on a cocktail of powerful drugs, each with its own side effects. Dr Paris briefly considers alternatives to pharmacology and again calls for more clinical trials of these approaches. He also discusses the current trend to medicalizing what many would describe as normal distress and states succinctly: Some things in life are worth being upset about.

Republicans Mourn The Death Of The Grand Old Party

CLEVELAND ― Republicans mourned the Grand Old Party after presidential nominee Donald Trump gave his acceptance speech at the 2016 Republican National Convention on Thursday.

Nicole Wallace, communications chief under former President George W. Bush, didn’t mince words after Trump spoke.

“The Republican Party that I worked for for two decades died in this room tonight,” Wallace said on NBC.

Meghan McCain, daughter of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), tweeted her condolences for the GOP:

A group of anti-Trump opponents held a funeral for the Republican Party in Washington on Thursday, staging a mock wake at an Irish bar near Capitol Hill.

Even before Trump accepted the Republican presidential nomination, many had started digging the GOP’s grave. The Los Angeles Times, NBC, Fusion, The Atlantic, Rolling Stone and numerous other media outlets have published op-eds in the days leading up to the Republican National Convention saying the party of Lincoln was no more.

My Best Friend Is 20 Years Older Than Me, Here’s What I’ve Learned

My best friend is a Filipino with kids as old as me.

It also doesn’t help that she’s female and I’m male.

Now pay attention. I want you to notice what you think about this. I want you to notice what your immediate assumptions are. Do you believe me? Are you not sure? Do you think I must be lying?

Most of the time society assumes the worst.

They think we MUST be in a relationship. We MUST be hiding it from absolutely everybody. But no matter how much dirt my friends or her friends try to dig out, they still come up empty-handed every time.

That’s because there’s nothing happening.

You know what we do? We do things that normal friends would. We sit and talk. We laugh about work. We confide and trust one another. We go out. The chemistry that everyone else sees is so easily mistaken for love, but that’s just because we know each other so well.

I can’t tell you how this happened. The stars aligned and for some reason we had the perfect amount of compatibility. But if you think about it you’ll see why we’re compatible. I’m 23 and I’m very much open to everything. I want to learn from the experience of everyone.

What better way to learn about life than to talk to someone twice my age from another country? And guess what? I’ve learned more than you can ever imagine. It’s the lessons that I’ve learned from this wonderful person that have shaped my decisions for the past year.

She told me one thing, and that was to stay single and enjoy life while I can. She got married when she was 21 and wished she could’ve done things over. I’m currently out in San Francisco, writing in my blog and travelling the United States. I owe it all to her.

The bigger point is that society is too often focused on the wrong things–like age, gender, race, and background. It’s for this reason that our growth as human beings becomes stunted. We only hang out with those our age who want to party and fall in love on a whim. Why not become friends with someone older? Why not learn about the implications of a divorce and marrying early and having children?

There’s a whole wealth of experience that we’re missing out on. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Many of my friends rushed to get married before they got to travel outside of their own state. I know from my experience with my best friend that this might not always be the best plan of action.

I learned so much from her.

I learned that being 40 doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun like you’re 21. I learned that being a single parent demands a departure from how you acted before a divorce. I learned patience. I learned that there’s a point where friends become family. I learned that Filipino people have the best hospitality.

My decision to commit social suicide by being seen with a woman twice my age in public paid dividends for me that I’ll continue to reap for years to come.

Friendships can be weird, but I’m convinced that it’s the most beautiful thing human beings are capable of creating. Don’t limit yourself because of what people may think. I say, go for it.

Stay Cool This Summer Without an AC

With temperatures reaching into the high 90s and triple digits across the country this week, I want to discuss how you can cool down safely in a heat wave without an air conditioner. Although cooling centers and air conditioners are great options for everyone, sometimes things might not work out as planned and your AC might break down, the store or cooling center might be closed, or there’s a regional blackout. When this kind of situation arises, remember to stay hydrated and give these cooling tips a try.

Watch: Dr. Oz’s Summertime Sleep Solution

Cook Outdoors or Make No-Cook Recipes

The warmest room in a residence tends to be the kitchen, where heat is generated to cook food. Keep the temperature inside your apartment or house cool by tossing no-cook salads, snacking on no-bake energy bars, or cooking outdoors on your porch or backyard. If you prefer to grill outside, follow this quick and easy grilling guide.

Watch: Gluten-Free Recipes: No Cooking Required!

Set Up Your Fan Strategically

Because hot air rises from the ground up, a ceiling fan isn’t your best choice when it comes to indoor room fans. The best place to set up a fan is to use a rotating fan on the floor. Position your fan with its blades across from an open window to create a cross-breeze. Use another fan by the window to vent hot air out as well. For more of a cooling effect, place a bowl of ice next to your floor fan so the fan will blow the rising cool air from the melting ice cubes into the room and bounce off the opposite wall. This will keep cool air circulating inside.

Try Spray Bottles or Wet Cloths and Sheets

Fill a spray bottle with cold water and spritz anytime you need a chill. Dampen a linen or cotton sheet and hang it by an open window to catch any breeze that comes through. You can also keep a wide bucket of water by the foot of a window and hang the sheet so the bottom portion touches the water. As the water evaporates and travels up the sheet, any breeze that passes through will feel cool. To cool down your skin, wet a cloth with cold or chilled water to use as a cold compress in a pinch.

Watch: Your Most Embarrassing Summer Questions

Turn Off Electronics

Powering down any non-essential electronics is just one small but significant way to keep additional hot air from circulating. Shut down anything not being used or that doesn’t need to be turned on like power strips, electric equipment like computers and televisions, and electric lights.

Use Awnings, Window Blinds, Curtains, or Shades

If you’re not near tree shade, use awnings for an artificial covering. When you’re indoors, keep blinds, curtains or shades drawn to reduce the amount of solar heat that enters through open windows. Look for thermal curtains or shades and give your windows a checkup to see if they’re energy-efficient. You can keep windows open for air circulation but try to leave half the window covered so you don’t get the maximum sun exposure you would get otherwise. If nighttime hours are cooler, open windows and doors to let the cool air inside.

Ted Cruz Pulls A Ted Kennedy From The 1980 Democratic Convention

When Ted Cruz refused to endorse Donald Trump in his Republican National Convention speech, he channeled his ideological opponent, Ted Kennedy, whose bitter primary fight with Jimmy Carter made him dodge the opportunity to raise hands with his opponent. It cost Carter the 1980 election, and might do similar damage to Trump.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz waged a bitter battle for the 2016 GOP Nomination with Donald Trump, being one of the last candidates standing. He and his wife were attacked by Trump over her looks, Goldman Sachs loans, accusations that his father had ties to Lee Harvey Oswald and the Kennedy assassination. Cruz also gave as good as he got.

While many other prominent Republicans stayed home from the RNC in Cleveland, Ohio, Cruz showed up. But if Trump felt that the conservative firebrand would kiss his ring, he was badly mistaken. Cruz delivered a very lengthy speech where he encouraged people to vote their conscience, rather than vote for the GOP nominee.

Earlier that day, Trump twice used aerial vehicles (his personal plane and his helicopter) to buzz Cruz’s rally. In the aftermath of the speech, Heidi Cruz had to be escorted by Virginia delegate Ken Cuccinelli from the convention hall, ostensibly for her own safety. Ted Cruz was booed.

2016-07-21-1469074881-6749628-0401161615.jpg

It’s not too different from the 1980 Democratic National Convention in New York City. Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy waged a bitter primary fight against incumbent President Jimmy Carter. Kennedy struggled from the gate, and Carter built a powerful lead. Then Kennedy mounted a furious comeback, narrowing Carter’s lead going into the convention.

Carter desperately needed a show of unity at the DNC that year to take on popular GOP challenger Ronald Reagan. Kennedy received a prime time speaking role at the convention. But if Carter wanted a warm embrace to unify the party, he didn’t get it. Kennedy’s speech barely mentioned Carter. And the Massachusetts Senator deliberately ducked Carter, who followed him around the stage but failed to get hands raised together. Carter’s reelection chances, and the rest, were history. Carter is still bitter about that snub, blaming Kennedy for his loss.

Trump claims that it was “no big deal” at a post-speech tweet, but that same tweet also blasted Cruz for not “honoring the pledge.” Trump came out to try and pry media cameras away from the Texas Senator. New Jersey Chris Christie went on CNN to slam Cruz, calling it “political suicide.”

Trump tweeted that he saw the speech, while his campaign manager insisted there would be an endorsement. It’s the Melania Trump plagiarism all over again, where mistakes are made, lies are told afterwards about who is responsible, and the story hangs around and incredible excuses are made (like the My Little Pony), wasting an effectively partisan Mike Pence speech.

What will happen next? Ted Cruz is headed for my congressional district in West Georgia, where he will campaign for State Senator Mike Crane, backed by the Club for Growth, who is seeking an open Congressional seat in a bitter primary against West Point Mayor Drew Ferguson, favored by local GOP elected officials. It will be the first test of how Republicans will react to Cruz’s non-endorsement. We’ll find out later in November whether Cruz did the same damage that Kennedy was able to do 36 years ago.

Stop The Violence And Hate: 5 Things You Can Do Now

2016-07-20-1469048933-7840592-sNEIGHBORHOODsmall.jpg

I am sure everyone reading this can agree on one thing — the violence and hate needs to stop, and it needs to stop now. I am talking about the daily violence and hatred that is going on around the world. The fire of violence is consuming us, and it seems to be a raging fire. The flames are being fanned every day, on TV, in the news, on social media, on talk radio, at the dinner tables, in the offices down the street.

The violence is committed in the name of justice, in the name of an ideology, in the name of enforcement, for revenge or to right a wrong. I am peaceful man and I will confess it hurts my heart to see such death and hated. We have so much innocent blood being shed for… what?

As novelist and humanitarian Wendall Berry once said, “Violence breeds violence. Acts of violence committed in justice or in affirmation of rights or in defense of peace do not end violence. They prepare and justify its continuation.”

So what can you do to stop it? You are just one person right? What can one person do? I think there are simple things we can all do to help stop it.

1. Start with you. As the old song said: “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.” If there is to be peace, then you need to start with you by not supporting, condoning, endorsing violence in any way. I see messages on social media that say, “Well I am glad they got justice — they deserved it!” They are endorsing the murder of another human being for justice. This is not justice, it just murder. So even if you don’t commit violence yourself, don’t be the one who feeds the beast in the form of encouragement. Don’t support this kind of behavior anywhere. Make a daily commitment (not just lip service) to being kind and loving to everyone you meet and interact with. Show others in the world that kindness comes on all colors shapes and sizes. It is not going to be easy — nothing worthwhile ever is — and you are going to have days when you are tired and fail. But the next day, get dust yourself off and try again.

2. Start with your family. Teach your children to be kind, to be aware of other people feelings, to give back and to take care of others. Teach them empathy and caring and make it one of your family values. The way to change a culture is first and foremost at home first. Teach them to respect all people or all races creeds and colors. As a parent, show them through your actions how to be a kind soul. Don’t allow them to talk bad about others or to express hate. Let them know that is not how kind people act and that it is not acceptable behavior. As Nelson Mandela once said, “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for loves comes more naturally to the human heart than the opposite.”

3. Start with your neighborhood. Do you know your neighbors? Reach out to them and get to know them. Be bold and knock on their door and say hi. Tell them as neighbors you need to stick together. Have a block party and get to know one another. Let them know you have their back. Take initiative and form a community association. Talk to each other. Have a community of connection and kindness. Our nation is a nation, but it is really made up of one neighborhood, and many neighborhoods make up a town, and many towns make up a state. Many states create a nation. You can’t change a nation but you can change your little pocket of the world, by creating and spreading peace and kindness in your neighborhood.

4. Start to volunteer. There are lots or people in the world that need care and help. When someone volunteers their time and energy to help someone else — hearts are healed and hatred dissipates. It’s hard to hate when you see people cares about you. I have done volunteer work with children, and I have seen the transformation power of what love can do to heal.

5. Start to listen. We need to stop being so polarized — no one wants to listen to anyone who doesn’t agree with them. In Washington DC, politicians just don’t listen to anyone on the other side of the aisle. We must start listening to other people with an open mind and trying to understand their world, their perspective. As Tennessee Williams once said, “I think hate is a feeling that can only exist where there is no understanding.”

I am asking you today in reading this to commit to being a bright and shining well of peace, good will and kindness. Let the cool and deep water of that well extinguish the flames of violence and hate.

An Apology Expert Analyzes The Explanation For Melania Trump’s Plagiarism

Speechwriter Meredith McIver’s mea culpa for the plagiarism in Melania Trump’s Republican National Convention speech is a genuine statement of contrition that is likely to be accepted, says an expert on apologies.

It has almost all the essential elements an apology needs to increase its likelihood of being embraced, and appears to be written from the heart and not under instruction by the Trump campaign, according to Roy Lewicki, a professor emeritus of management and human resources at the Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business who specializes in trust development and trust repair.

However, when viewed in the light of the Trump campaign’s initial reaction to the news that Melania Trump had delivered lines that were previously spoken by Michelle Obama during the 2008 Democratic convention, Lewicki isn’t quite sure what to make of the wider significance of McIver’s statement. Its release is puzzling, to say the least, and presents a fuzzy message on just how trustworthy the Trump campaign is.

“It’s surprising that this is one of the few times in the campaign that someone has owned up to a mistake or an error, and I would be hard pressed to know exactly why, in her case, this was allowed to sort of come out,” Lewicki said. “Particularly since the campaign and the candidate, in the previous 36 hours, were doing anything they could do to dismiss it or deny it or claim it was a trivial issue.”

But first, let’s dig into the apology itself

According to Lewicki’s research on the six essential elements of a sincere and effective apology, McIver hits it out of the park. Those six elements, in order of importance, are:

  1. Acknowledgement of responsibility

  2. Offer of repair

  3. Expression of regret

  4. Explanation of what went wrong

  5. Declaration of repentance

  6. Request for forgiveness

The more of these elements an apology contains, the more likely a recipient is to accept it, according to Lewicki’s recent study published in April

Here is McIver’s statement in full, re-typed from the PDF released on the Trump campaign website Wednesday morning. We’ve annotated it to point out the statements that fulfill the apology elements on Lewicki’s list.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

My name is Meredith McIver and I’m an in-house staff writer at the Trump Organization. I am also a longtime friend and admirer of the Trump family.

In working with Melania Trump on her recent First Lady Speech, we discussed many people who inspired her and messages she wanted to share with the American people. A person she has always liked is Michelle Obama. Over the phone, she read me some passages from Mrs. Obama’s speech as examples. I wrote them down and later included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final speech. I did not check Mrs. Obama’s speeches [4: Explanation of what went wrong]. This was my mistake [1: Acknowledgment of responsibility], and I feel terrible for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps, as well as to Mrs. Obama. No harm was meant [3: Expression of regret].

Yesterday, I offered my resignation to Mr. Trump and the Trump family [6: Request for forgiveness, or what Lewicki describes as a “backhanded request”], but they rejected it. Mr. Trump told me that people make innocent mistakes and that we learn and grow from these experiences [5: Declaration of repentance].

I asked to put out this statement because I did not like seeing the way this was distracting from Mr. Trump’s historic campaign for president and Melania’s beautiful message and presentation.

I apologize for the confusion and hysteria my mistake has caused. Today, more than ever, I am honored to work for such a great family. I personally admire the way Mr. Trump has handled this situation and I am grateful for his understanding.

Sincerely,

[Signature]

Meredith McIver

It’s important to note that Element 4, the explanation of what went wrong, can further affect the way an apology lands because it could either be an honest mistake or a violation of integrity that reflects on a person’s character. In McIver’s case, she explains it was an honest mistake.

You’ll also see that Element 2 is missing ― that’s because there really is no way to repair the fact that Melania Trump delivered a partially plagiarized speech to an audience of 23 million TV viewers, Lewicki explained. But barring that, the statement is well-crafted and appears to convey genuine remorse for the mistake.

“This is a case of a good apology that’s sort of surprising because it stands out in such contrast to the tactics of the broader campaign,” said Lewicki.

Indeed, when one considers McIver’s statement within the wider context of the Trump campaign’s response to accusations that Melania’s speech had been at least partially cribbed from Michelle Obama’s, the intended effect of her apology becomes less certain.

The campaign had spent the day after the speech bizarrely denying the plagiarism had taken place (despite the one-in-87 billion chance those words had assembled themselves randomly in about the same order Obama had delivered them), blaming Hillary Clinton for the media attention and even angrily protesting that the plagiarism accusations amounted to an assertion that Obama invented the English language

On top of it all, the candidate himself appeared to revel in the continued media coverage of his wife’s speech, which makes the point of McIver’s apology (to regain trust and start the forgiveness process) suspect, according to Lewicki.

“That’s been a consistent process in the whole Trump campaign to keep the media focus on them by whatever means they need to,” Lewicki concluded. “Which, from my point of view, makes the credibility of the candidate and the campaign sort of questionable.”
